In this session, we map the research field of science communication and learn about foundational theoretical concepts for science communication.

Starting from the outdated deficit model of science communication, which assumes a linear and one-sided relationship between science and a deficient public, we discuss dialogical concepts of science communication (e.g. co-production, mode 2, open science).

Fundamental to these concepts is the cooperative knowledge work between researchers and non-researchers. We learn about the implications of dialogue for the social organization of science and how digitization creates new arenas of science communication along the entire research process, e.g., in data collection and analysis. Based on this, we develop a definition of science communication that includes all forms of communication dealing with scientific results, methods and processes.
