1 – The Complete Guide to Communication Skills in clinical Practice (CLASS)

Summary:

The C-L-A-S-S Protocol outlines a structured approach for clinical interviews with five key steps:

C – CONTEXT (Setting): Ensure a private, distraction-free area for the interview. Pay attention to the physical space, eye level, and body language. Consider cultural factors regarding touch.

L – LISTENING SKILLS: Employ effective listening techniques, such as open-ended questions, facilitating the patient’s expression, and clarifying understanding. Manage time constraints and interruptions appropriately.

A – ACKNOWLEDGE EMOTIONS: Identify and respond to the patient’s emotions empathetically. Acknowledge the emotion, understand its cause, and demonstrate the connection without necessarily sharing the same feelings.

S – STRATEGY: Propose a comprehensible plan for treatment. Appraise patient expectations, decide on a medical plan, recommend a strategy, evaluate the patient’s response, and collaborate to agree on the plan.

S – SUMMARY: Conclude the interview by summarizing the discussion clearly and concisely. Confirm the patient’s understanding, address any remaining questions, and establish a clear contract for a follow-up visit. If time is limited, suggest addressing additional questions in the next appointment.
