Welcome to Week 1

Welcome to our course!

Over the next two weeks, we will explore the options higher education can offer, alongside core studies.

Together, we will cover the following areas:

• What does it mean to actively participate in your academic department and how can you optimise your learning opportunities?
• What role does assessment play in academia?
• What does it mean to engage in an academic skills community?
• How do you navigate challenges along the way, and where can you find the guidance you need at the right time?
• What exciting opportunities exist to cultivate essential employability skills for your future career and how can you fully capitalise on these?
• How can you effectively prepare for the next milestones in your career?

Please note that active tutor facilitation is limited to the number of teaching weeks from when the course run started. Please do not therefore expect any further tutor engagement from beyond then, although you are very welcome to continue to work through the course materials in a self-directed fashion from that point.

Learning outcomes

As we work through the materials and activities, we will enable you to:

• Assess the importance of proactive engagement in the learning process and its impact on personal growth and achievement.
• Identify strategies to make the most of educational opportunities and resources available to you whilst studying at university.
• Engage in discussion with peers and experts to share insights, perspectives and strategies for maximising learning and career potential.
• Reflect on personal experiences and challenges to develop adaptability in navigating the student journey.
