MALABIKA SARKER: Hello, everyone. This is Professor Malabika Sarker. I’m associate dean and also lead the Center of Science for Implementation and Scale-Up at BRAC James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Welcome to the module on human resources for health. In this lecture, we’ll focus on why human resources are crucial for a successful program. We’ll discuss about why and what incentive is important, how health workers reach vulnerable population, and how the role of gender, politics, and violence shaping the exemplary work health workers are doing for polio eradication.

In this section, Dr. Sarker draws on her experience in exploring the synergies between global public health programs and equity, gender, and security, to illustrate how gender, politics, and violence shape the work of healthcare workers.

Before you continue with the lecture, think about the following:

  • What incentives do you think are most important to healthcare workers?
  • What are some strategies healthcare workers could deploy to reach vulnerable populations?

Post your thoughts in the discussion section. You will find answers to these in upcoming lectures!
