The Impact of Trauma Following Assault

The Impact of Trauma Following Assault
JOHN SHARP: I was fortunate enough as a trainee to have some initial cases of working with trauma in my adult mental health placement. Within this placement, I had the experience of working with a young gentleman who had been unfortunate victim of a serious physical assault. He described having been out for a picnic with his then girlfriend and was set about by a group of young thugs who used knifes to attack both him and his girlfriend, and it had had a profound impact upon his life and general well-being. His relationship had broken down as a consequence of it. He was unable to leave his home address and unable to work or continue his higher education studies.
It was clear that this man’s life was potentially ruined because of this event and his reaction to it.

Dr John Sharp describes an individual who suffered an assault, which had profound consequences for the individual’s general wellbeing and social functioning. Make some personal notes about the impact trauma can have on an individual.
