Producing a piece of structured writing reflects a structure to your ideas and your arguments. It demonstrates a structure and a flow to your thoughts. It helps engage your reader, giving them confidence in your ability to develop and support your argument.

At university, structure is not developed to a formula. It depends on the nature of the argument you’re developing, and the type of evidence you’re using to support your argument. However, there are some important basics for you to master before you get to university.

First you need to be able to understand when an essay question is asking of you. You need to then unpick the question and set out your argument. Secondly, you need to develop good paragraph structure. You cannot develop an argument effectively if your paragraphs are not structured well in themselves.

The essay is the opportunity to express your own ideas and understanding, and this is done most effectively by ensuring that the essay is well structured, and has a clear developing argument.
The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of why structure is important, and how having an opinion (or forming a judgement) is crucial to structure.
