Introduction to Week 2

Find out what we will be learning on Week 2 of the course.
6.3
Welcome to week 2. This week, we will show you how to teach the basics of astronomy and go beyond the UK curriculum. We’ll give you ideas, resources, and tools to teach astronomy with confidence. We’ll cover core curriculum topics such as day and night, the phases of the moon, the scale and dynamic structure of the solar system, and invisible phenomena. We’ll explain relevant astronomical terminology and provide you with up-to-date fascinating facts. We’ll also go off road and answer the big questions that go above and beyond the curriculum and the imagination. We’ll highlight some of the major unknowns in astronomy and give you a taste of how scientists investigate objects beyond their reach.

Throughout week 2, there will be an opportunity for you to share your ideas and resources via virtual pinboard and to participate in discussion. We want you to feel fully equipped and ready to teach your class about space. Let us show you how to bring the universe to your classroom.

In Week 2 we will show you ways to teach core astronomy topics for Key Stage 2 (ages 7 – 11 years) pupils. We will explain concepts such as night and day, the lunar phase cycle, shadows on the Moon and invisible forces and materials such as magnetism and air.

We will chat about some of the most challenging questions we’ve been asked by primary students about space, such as what’s inside a black hole?, where did the Universe come from? and what will happen to Earth in the future?. We’ll provide accurate and accessible information relating to the deepest philosophical questions through our quirky animated videos.

We’ll introduce you to the scientific process in astronomy, something we’ll visit in more detail in Week 3. As we go through let us know how you get on in your own lessons:
