Hello, everybody. My name is Joanne Shaw and I head up Dental X-ray Protection Services or DXPS here at Public Health England. A warm welcome to this course, which has been designed for all those who work with X-rays in dental practice, including those who have responsibility for radiation protection. This training is suitable for learners who have had no previous radiation protection training right through to those with many years experience who would like to refresh their training in this field. This course will give you a thorough understanding of the requirements for radiation protection in dental practice. Our aim is to provide you with sufficient information to carry out X-ray imaging safely and in compliance with the requirements of UK legislation.

The training is delivered across five weeks, with each week providing about one hour of training. Successful completion of the course will earn you five points of verifiable continuous professional development, and you will be able to download a certificate as evidence of this. On completion of the course, we expect that you will understand the potential hazards associated with X radiation and the importance of restricting the exposure of staff and patients as far as is reasonably practicable.

You’ll be familiar with the principal requirements of UK legislation and guidance relating to work with dental X-ray equipment, you’ll be able to apply the basic principles of practical radiation protection in a dental practice, and you’ll be in a position to take on the role of the radiation protection supervisor in relation to dental radiography.
