Onwards Together to 2030

If we are to include the marginalised and excluded then we need to work together.
5.8
Margaret: There’s no doubt that it is difficult and challenging sometimes to include those who are excluded and marginalised. Perhaps our education systems don’t support, or don’t seem to support, us as we try to include those who are excluded. Perhaps there’s a lack of resources and that impacts on how well we can include those who are excluded. Or perhaps, it’s the values of society around about us and the attitudes of people that also are not supportive to including those who are excluded and marginalised. We hope that as you’ve shared ideas and discussed these issues with each other that you realise you’re not alone in your quest to create inclusive learning environments.

None of the contributors on this course are suggesting that this is easy. If we do believe that education is for all, then we have to grapple with these hard issues. We have to think about what it means in our own cultural context and our own setting. If we are to achieve inclusive education that’s equitable and of high quality for everybody by 2030, then we can’t avoid doing this. Perhaps we need to stop talking about inclusion and make it happen. And this course was developed with that in mind. We hope that you are now thinking about what it means in your cultural context to include those who are excluded.

So here we are at the end of our three week online course. We hope that you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have. We’ve thought about hard things. We’ve discussed and debated some hard issues, too. But we hope that through it, you have learned something, that you have thought about what happens in your country and in your schools.

Congratulations upon completing this free online course!

Margaret Sutherland concludes this online course by highlighting the need to work together as we strive to meet Sustainable Development Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning. We hope enjoyed participating with others from around the world. Perhaps you are inspired to find out more about education for all.
