Revisiting the big question

Revisiting the big question

How do you effectively design, develop and deploy online products and services with user safety and rights front and centre?

This is the big question posed at the beginning of this course that we have explored over the past four weeks.

You should now understand the important role eSafety’s Safety by Design initiative plays in helping tech companies and developers embed user safety and rights into product and service design, development and release.

The course content has captured the broad application of Safety by Design – as a practical initiative backed by guidance materials and risk assessment tools – across the digital ecosystem.

Safety by Design – prioritising user safety

The Safety by Design principles are underpinned by the fundamental human rights of our society.

Throughout the course, we have emphasised making the user the centre of online product and service design. Online safety recognises the importance of protecting all individuals, (particularly vulnerable and at-risk groups) from a spectrum of risks and harms.

Safety by Design captures the diverse needs of the technology ecosystem and has involved NGOs, advocates, parents, young people and many community groups from across the globe.

Safety by Design encourages innovation, building in a breadth of views and technical expertise to highlight how adopting a preventative and inclusive design approach can empower and provide autonomy to users.
