In the 2nd of this two-part series, Fiona uses an example research question to show you how to carry out a detailed literature search.

In the second of this two-part series, Fiona uses an example research question to search the database MEDLINE to show you how to carry out a detailed literature search.

  • Use of ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ in searches
  • Different ways to search (e.g. use of terms)
  • How to use the search history
  • How to use ‘limits’ to narrow down your search
  • Tips for searching (e.g. using symbols)
  • What to do once you have found your evidence

Fiona encourages anyone doing a literature search to use the help function within the database you are using as these can provide you with useful search tips. Fiona does advise to be aware that certain ways of searching (for example if you need to use “inverted commas” for phrases) may differ between databases, but the help sections should support with this.
