What are potential ‘bumps’ in the next stage of the journey?

New teachers tell us about the 'bumpy moments' they have experienced
So in terms of bumpy moments in my NQT year, I would probably say the first bumpy moment I experienced was pacing myself. I had done teaching placements in Early Years, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 across my teacher training, and they are exactly that– teaching placements. And they last for a certain amount of time. And you can go 6 weeks, 8 weeks, even 10 weeks with no social life putting in all the hours in the world, because you know that it ends at some point, whereas when you become an NQT, this is your career, and it’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon.
So I would just say trying to pace yourself and trying to make sure that you have a good work-life balance, and that comes with also having a good support network at home, where you can offload and where you can obviously have that balance, whether it be a social balance or whether it be a hobby or something like that. So I would say that was my first bump was realising that, actually, hold on a second– you’re going to have to pace yourself here.
