What is the ACNC?

In this video, the Director of Education Rachel Smith explains the ACNC's objectives and activities.

Hi. My name’s Rachel Smith. I’m the Director of Education at the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. There’s around 60,000 registered charities in Australia and they deliver programmes across a broad range of sectors such as agriculture, animal welfare, education, religion, health, human services, community development, the environment and the arts. Charities employ more than 10% of all Australian employees, and are supported by over 3.4 million volunteers. They make a significant contribution to both the economy and the social fabric of the communities in which they work. The ACNC is Australia’s national regulator of charities

and we have three main objectives: To maintain, protect and enhance public trust and confidence in the Australian not-for-profit sector. To support and sustain a robust, vibrant, independent and innovative, not-for-profit sector and to promote the reduction of unnecessary regulatory obligations on the sector.

The work we do to achieve these objectives includes: Registering eligible not-for-profits as charities, maintaining a free, searchable public register of charities, helping the public to understand the work charities do. Helping charities to understand and meet their obligations and embed good governance practises through the provision of guidance and support. And we work with other government agencies to reduce the administrative burden on charities.

A charity board is ultimately responsible for leading a charity. Managing its finances, its operations staff and volunteers. So it’s critical that boards ensure they have the right skills and knowledge to execute their roles. I’d like to thank you for joining our online courses. We hope you find the content helpful because good governance is key to the day-to-day work of charities, the sustainability of the sector and maintaining public trust and confidence in the work charities do.

In this video, the ACNC Commissioner Dr Gary Johns discusses the ACNC’s objects and some of its activities.
