A focus on hydrogen use in transport can lead to further success.

The transportation sector is one of the largest contributors to global emissions therefore expanding the use of hydrogen in transport is of utmost importance. Supporting the uptake of hydrogen-powered cars, trucks and buses will make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles more competitive. This will require a multifaceted approach, including the adoption of hydrogen powered fleets, developing the required infrastructure for refuelling, as well as increased public awareness about the benefits of hydrogen-powered transport.

In Australia, the Warrnambool Hydrogen Mobility Project, being developed in Southwest Victoria, aims to turn a regional public transport fleet of twelve diesel powered buses into hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The project will include activities across the hydrogen supply chain, from hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling, as well as maintenance.

Warrnambool Bus Lines will provide hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, whilst Air Liquide Australia will support the production, compression and storage of hydrogen and the provision of hydrogen fuelling facilities. Implementation of this project will leverage the initiative of the Hycel Technology Hub, a hydrogen fuel cell research and training facility at Deakin University.

In step 2.9 you heard from Foton who are one of the companies who are pioneering the establishment of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
