The relevance of Bembo's thesis

In this video we will answer a big question: what happened after Bembo’s thesis won?

The 16th century witnessed the emergence of the first grammars and vocabularies designed to translate Bembo’s theoretical suggestions into practical terms available to a broader audience. One of the most important works of this kind is Osservazioni nella volgar lingua written by Lodovico Dolce and published in 1550. This book worked as a guide in which people could find numerous examples of Bembo’s linguistic norms.

Bembo’s influence on literature is clearly shown in the third edition of Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. Originally written in padano illustre, the vernacular used in northern courts, after the publication of Prose della Volgar Lingua in 1525, Ariosto changed the language employed in the work to stick to Bembo’s ideas.
