Human Factors: Situational & Team Awareness

In this video, Dr Arndt Melzer discusses with Captains Dave and Alex from WingFactors about situational and team awareness, with a focus on briefing

The term “situational awareness” is often used when talking about human factors, but what does it mean to you?…

Welcome To The Word Cloud!

Throughout the course we’ll invite you to share your thoughts using a word cloud:

  1. Open the word cloud in a new window – you can right click on the Situational Awareness Word Cloud and choose ‘open link in new window’ or simply hold down shift and click on it. Write your answer and submit it, and then just close the window to return to the course.
  2. You can then view the results!
  • No two critical care transfers are the same, highlighting the importance of every team member being aware not only of ‘the plan’ but also specific threats that could impact a transfer on the day.
  • As you saw in the video, flight crew raise team situational awareness through interactive briefings at the start of the day. These discussions take place before boarding the aircraft and typically include the routing, managing potential threats (weather, delays, technical defects), and an opportunity for individuals to raise concerns and additional considerations.
