Welcome to Week 2, where we will learn the fundamental principles of transferring critical care patients.

By the end of Week 2 you should be able to:

  • Summarise the physiology and physics pertinent to transfer medicine
  • Consider the practical and logistical issues when transferring critically-ill patients
  • Describe some processes for mitigating the risk and managing critical incidents encountered on transfers
  • Apply human factors principles to transfer medicine – including leadership, teamwork and communication
  • Describe the roles of multi-disciplinary professionals within a transfer team

During this week, you will see a number of videos following a critical care transfer team. While most of these videos focus on adult inter-hospital transfers, the principles discussed are applicable to a wide range of transfer situations.

We welcome you to share your own experiences and interact with other learners throughout the week in the comments sections!
