Indigenous Knowledge and perspectives

While there is no single Indigenous perspective, as these perspectives vary among different Indigenous communities, there are common themes and approaches that can be found.

Interconnectedness and community focus

Indigenous cultures often emphasise the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of community and extended family networks. Trauma and shame within interpersonal relationships are understood as having a ripple effect on the entire community.

Historical trauma and colonisation

As you learned in Week 2 many Indigenous communities have experienced trauma resulting from colonisation, forced relocations, cultural suppression, and other forms of systemic oppression.

This trauma has intergenerational impacts on individuals, relationships, and communities.
