Exams and me

Learners discuss their feelings about examinations
Hi, and welcome to this course– Understanding IELTS: Techniques for English Language Tests. I’m Rob, and I’ll be your video tutor. In the next six weeks, you’ll be looking at the four skills of English– reading, writing, speaking, and listening– and how they’re tested in the IELTS test. You’ll be finding out more about the format of IELTS and learning some techniques to help you improve your performance. To start this week, though, I’d like to talk about exams– not just IELTS, but all exams. How do you feel about examinations? Do you love them or hate them, or perhaps somewhere in between? We asked some students that question, and here are some of the things that they said.
Well, actually, I– for sure, I feel quite nervous about the exams– like every person, I think. But for me, it’s also like a challenge. And it’s a good thing to test yourself, so I quite like it in a way. And so since I’ve had so many of them already, I kind of get used to challenge myself on them. 50-50. I– I’m afraid of exams. I kind of hate them because I can’t sleep at night before the exam, but I think this is a great opportunity to check my language. So I feel kind of nervous about exams, but I don’t hate them 100%.
I feel great about exams. It’s a chance to know how well-prepared you are to take them.
I think exams are a good opportunity to challenge yourself, to show your high or weak points, and maybe improve it next time. I hate them. I hate all of them.
I’m taking IELTS in 12 days, and I feel a bit nervous. I think I should start preparing– [CHUCKLING] –to take it. Do you think you’ll be fine? It’s Monday. Start things, OK. So you heard there that people feel differently about exams, but how about you? How do you feel? Share your thoughts with other learners in the discussion on this step.
