Public spaces are key in urban developments, and for attracting visitors. Key elements of public space include streets, buildings, open spaces, and green, blue and white spaces such as parks and water.

When shaping urban spaces, it is important to think about:

  • Movement and legibility

  • Space and enclosure

  • Mixed uses and tenures

  • Adaptability and resilience

  • Resources and efficiency

  • Architecture and townscape

If you want to learn more about these aspects, or to recapitulate what we have previously discussed, you might want to consider taking the course Placemaking and Public Space Design: Unlocking Tourist Destinations here on FutureLearn.
