When analysing solar access and shade in an urban area, it is useful to analyse different scenarios.

The days and times often used for solar analysis is to model the 21 December and 21 June, as this is the extreme scenario with the shortest and longest day of the year. Modelling 21 March and 21 September is also useful as this is the equinox, that is, those days represent an ‘average’ day.

Furthermore, for solar analysis, it is useful to model different times of the day, for example 9:00, 12:00, and 15:00. This gives a better understanding of how solar access and shade effects a specific place during the day. Once you have made these three scenarios, you can combine them into one image, which helps visualising where you have the most and the least solar access as a whole.

Depending on how you want to use the space you have analysed, this can help you to decide what potential you have to shape a more attractive and people-friendly place.
