Introducing VSCode and file handling

How to use VSCode to open and run files and use debugging tools.

In this video, you are provided with an introduction to Week 2. The video demonstrates how to use VSCode to open and run files and use debugging tools.

Your turn

This is an opportunity for you to have a play around with some code – you are welcome to change the code, create new files, and generally explore the IDE and the many submenus!
The Using VSCode.zip contains three files:
  • calculator.py – a piece of python code which can do some different maths functions. You can run this using the ‘Run in terminal’ button.
  • test.py – some automated tests which you can run.
  • format_me.py – this is some slightly different python code which you can also run, but contains some formatting errors. You should use the autoformat tool to see how this changes the code.
Open each of the files in Visual Studio and have a go at running the programs before moving on to the next step.
