£78m government funding for world-leading computing education: FutureLearn plays a role in online delivery

The Department for Education yesterday announced £78 million in government funding to make sure every child in every school in England has access to a world-leading computing education.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation, STEM Learning and the British Computer Society, will establish a new National Centre for Computing Education, and deliver a comprehensive programme of support for computing teachers in primary and secondary schools. This will include resources, training, research, certification, and more.

FutureLearn is the platform where all of the online learning will take place. There are ambitious plans to create 35 courses aimed at upskilling teachers on the frontline of computing education. The Centre believes that through a combination of online and face-to-face training for these teachers they can realise their ambition of “every child in every school in England [having] a world-leading computing education.”

Stephen Somerville, MD, Government and Employers said, “We’re passionate about transforming access to education and are keen to play a role in addressing the digital skills gap. This project goes to the heart of that so we’re delighted to be working with The Raspberry Pi Foundation to provide high-quality online courses as part of this initiative.”

Stephen continued, “Digital has an important role to play in enabling education at scale; we’re proud that’s being recognised here and proud to be chosen as their online learning partner.”
