Newcastle University wins Outstanding Educational Resource at National Dementia Awards

Winners 1

Congratulations to our partner Newcastle University who last week were recognised at the National Dementia Awards 2019 for two free online courses that are run on the FutureLearn platform.

Dementia Care: Staying Connected and Living Well, and Dementia Care: Living Well as Dementia Progresses were both designed to provide information, advice, and opportunities to share experiences for people living with or care for people with dementia.

Developed in partnership between academic teams in FMS led by Lynne Corner and Professor Dame Louise Robinson, and the Learning and Teaching Development Service, the course are now in their 8th and 3rd runs respectively and consistently get great feedback from learners.

Discussing why they chose Newcastle University’s courses, the National Dementia Awards 2019 said: “The Judges chose Massive Open Online Courses because of the quality of development and design, potential reach and accessibility. The product has comprehensive content which continues to be developed in response to carer needs and to meet the needs of an international audience. There is potential to enhance the MOOC to meet professional carers’ needs, which has been recognised and is being responded to. The MOOC is an example of facilitating the uptake of evidence.”

Dr Marie Poole, Research Associate at Newcastle University, who accepted the award, said: I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of both of our dementia care MOOC teams and hope that winning the award means that we can reach out to more carers of people living with dementia who are in need of support – helping to address some aspects of unmet carer needs.

Helen Fuller, Global Healthcare Lead at FutureLearn, said: “We’re delighted for the team at Newcastle University. We are all living living longer and courses like this are incredibly important in helping communities deal with the issues that come with this ageing population.”
