    Thank you all.

  • Manme G made a comment

    We appreciate you all.

  • It's has been a great learning experience on this course.I commend all who contributed one way or the other to the success of this learning process, you guys really did a tremendous job within a short period of time.

    Thank you very much.

  • There should be a synergy among health care providers, frequent training and provision of up to date laboratory equipment

  • Test kits are donated by Jack Ma foundation through African union and donations of other consumables are done by organizations and individuals.

  • NCDC uses SORMAS for data collection and supply chain management here in Nigeria.

  • Very educative and interesting presentation.

At what stage of a pandemic does genomic technology become useful in disease prevention and control.

As explained in the video presentation there seem to be a difference in the genome sequence at number 241 with the specie in Belgium with a C while that in South Africa having a T,what is the cause of this...

  • Right now the only option is the lockdown.

Considering the fact that not enough information has been obtained concerning the conferment of immunity on individuals who tested positive for the antibody test. And the fact that it is not also known whether that same individual is immuned to reinfection.

The lockdown can be relaxed at intervals with strict...

  • Currently here in Nigeria the NCDC has not approved the use of RDT.

Presently the NCDC has scaled up molecular testing centers with emphasis on states with high number of confirmed cases and high death rate.

  • I think the guideline is good but I believe it is subject to review with more discoveries from the on going research all over the world.

There is need for researchers from all the countries in the world to be involved in the research on how best to improve on the efficacy of RDTs.

In my opinion RDTs can be used for screening and PCR for confirmation.

  • Data on the RDT kit with least cross reactivity and very high specificity and sensitivity will be required.

Definitely validation and verification studies will be carried out to ascertain the the efficiency of the RDTs.

  • As mentioned above cross reactivity could affect the sensitivity and specificity of the RDT method.

Can this be avoided by monoclonal antibody production?

  • Time is of essence in this global fight against Covid 19 and for us to win we need to keep testing and testing

Lateral flow immunoassay or RDT is the only method that produces results within minutes.

Sample collection is another factor that might affect the outcome of the test.

The question here is can a person infected by Coronavirus heal with the...

  • Very educative and interesting presentation on the human body response to infection.

But more explanation on hyperinflammation and how it results to death will be very important.

  • A lot of doubts has been cleared and more knowledge on the principle of ELISA has been passed.

Though I have not performed one myself I have seen people perform the test, it is quite sensitive but it requires expertise and alot of meticulous procedures.

  • @FrancesDownes
I appreciate your response, can you expatiate on why a central laboratory cannot verify results for peripheral laboratory.

  • @KimLewis
Definitely, the statement I made above is based on my assumption.

I will try to get a standardized protocol from the NCDC.

  • @KimLewis
I am not sure but it might be 5 - 10 specimen.

They may consist of pre diagnosed Oro pharyngeal,Nosopharyngeal and sputum samples.

  • Hello everyone, I am Manme a laboratory technician from Plateau state, Nigeria.

    Feels great to be here

  • Manme G made a comment

There has been an increase in the number of positive Covid 19 cases probably because of the increased number of testing centers.Which is indicative of possible community spread of the infection.

More states have taken more actions to increase the number of people being tested for Covid 19.

  • Quite insightful, now I understand to some extend why there is need for tests after recovery before discharge.
    Thank you.

  • To ensure accurate and reliable results no amount of pressure should lead to the lack of quality control in our laboratories.

With the restriction of movement and it's attendant effect, in house quality control is the best option.

Sensitivity and specificity, cost, availability will be my watch words.

  • This is explicit and quite informative. Thank you.

  • Concerning Covid 19 here in Nigeria, NCDC is the body saddled with the responsility of validating and verifying laboratory activities.

Sars coV 2 being a novel virus and because there was no existing policy about the Validation and varitification of Covid 19 the NCDC has been able to bring up policies that can be used in this respect and on a daily basis...

  • I think it is necessary for every laboratory to validate and verify their activities this will enhance the quality of results produced in such laboratories.

The NCDC provides the panel specimen used for the verification here in Nigeria.

  • The Nigeria center for disease control gives out data on a daily basis on the number of new cases detected, number discharged, death and active cases.

This data is gotten from the various test centers established across the states in the country.

Data required to warrant molecular testing would include but not restricted to availability of equipment,...

  • Is the PPV and NPV principle applicable for both closed and open platforms?

  • Though i am not in a position to decide I feel the closed platform will definite be a good decision for testing here in Nigeria because some of the closed platform machines mentioned earlier are available here in Nigeria.

There are laboratory Personel that have been trained to use these machines which are currently being used for TB and HIV tests.

    PCR is...

  • Genexpert and Cobas machines are available here in Nigeria which are being used for TB,LFT PCR.

With this presentation I now know they are being operated based on the closed platform.

  • I have learnt alot through this presentation on the amplification, cycle threshold, fluorescence,PTC,NTC and how to know if viral RNA is detected or not.

This will definitely guide me if I eventually get chosen to work in any of the Covid 19 testing laboratory.

  • Interesting .
    Thank you.

  • What about the sensitivity and specificity of these platforms?

  • I think there's need to always remind laboratory staff on the need to observe laboratory safety measures.

  • @RobC
My pleasure. I hope you find it useful.

  • Lack of PPE is a major concern here in Nigeria, but the government is trying it's best to make it available for the health workers.

  • @RobC
Nigeria center for disease control has a number of social media outlets where information is shared on a daily basis.

You can connect through this link.

  • You are right the government need to urgently establish more testing and sample collection centers in the North and deploy more health care Personel to assist in the fight.

  • Viral transport media is not available, lack of constant electricity supply affect storage of samples.

Non availability of safety or box for sample transportation.

  • What happens when the patient sneezes in the process of sample collection.

The major Challenge is PPE shortage of PPE can affect sample collection.

  • There is need for more synergy to curtail the shortage of reagents and consumables.

  • Manme G made a comment

Excited, molecular testing is of immense importance in the fight against Covid 19,therefore I consider this an opportunity to learn about it.

  • Manme G made a comment

Most importantly I learnt that there are 3 major tests that can be carried out for Covid 19,PCR which detects viral genome or RNA,immunological test which detects viral protein or Antigen and serological test that detect antibodies IgM/IgG.

I also learnt that this tests are carried out at various stages of infection with the virus and the also give...

  • WHO, UN and other non-governmental organizations should call upon world leaders on the need to improve their health care delivery system most especially in African countries.

  • The Nigerian government through the NCDC has a committee saddled with the responsibility of scaling up testing centers in the country.

This committee visits health facilities where TB and HIV tests are carried out with the aim of scaling them up for Covid 19 test.

Genexpert machines previously used for TB test are being calibrated to be used for Covid 19...

  • Restrictions on movement has affected TB and HIV testing because people are not allowed to go out to the various health facilities for routine test as usual because of the lockdown and curfew imposed in most states here in Nigeria.

Even though there are emergency numbers given out by government for emergency cases, more effort needs to be made in creating...

  • In Nigeria, there is government collaboration with the private sector in the production of PPE and hand sanitizers.

Aslo in the production of ventilators efforts are being made to produce them locally and in the refurbishing/calibration of equipment that could be used in Covid 19 testing process.

There is also an established basket account where all...

  • More testing centers are being established with designated sample collection points especially in states that have high active cases of Covid 19

  • In my country Nigeria more testing centers are being established and more PPE are also being manufactured locally.

According to the Director general of NCDC Dr Chikwe Genexpert machines will also be calibrated for Covid 19 testing in Nigeria with about 400 of the Genexpert machines available in Nigeria about 41 are ready to be used for Covid 19 testing as...

  • Provision of test kits and PPE seem to be a global challenge due to the global lockdown.

WHO should come to the rescue of these countries as usual.

  • Here in Nigeria, the major issue is the coordination of these testing centers, I most commend the leadership of the country's CDC for their efforts to scale up the testing of Covid 19 in Nigeria by opening up more testing centers across the country.

I will also advocate for more synergy among African countries on the fight against this pandemic especially...

  • Quite insightful and educative, I will be glad to get more information on the appropriate test to be done on various stages of the infection

  • Why was the husband shot on the hand and not on the head like his wife.
Why didn't the turn back the car when he noticed the road has been blocked
Why was his wife shot on the head

  • I think at the moment it will be too early to make assumptions here, but the husband will also be interrogated.

  • Looking forward to an exciting learning session

  • Forensic science involves the use of series of scientific methods to obtain informations about individuals involved in a disaster on in a crime scene.

  • Manme G made a comment

More awareness needs to be created on GLASS in the countries where it has already been established and emphasis should also be made to established one in countries where there is none

  • Information concerning the menace of this emerging trend of Drug resistant Gonorrhoea should be extended to other countries urgently.Summarily more awareness and advocacy is needed.

  • Manme G made a comment

In addition to diagnoses, adequate and frequent training of personel should be advocated and increasing the number of tests centers will go a long way.

  • Here in Plateau state Nigeria,Gene xpert is used in most of the referral centers for MDRTB detection, culture and sensitivity are rarely used.

  • The moment health workers are seen and work together as team and treatment is narrowed down to the particular pathogen causing a disease AMR can be drastically reduced.

  • Manme G made a comment

I am not aware of any VRE surveillance recommendations in any health facility here.

  • Manme G made a comment

Sepsis is a major problem in this part of the world, broad spectrum antibiotics are commonly used for treatment which eventually leads to AMR.

Generally, there is hardly any protocol for the diagnosis of sepsis, but blood culture are rarely done due to the turn out time and cost implications.

  • Urine dipstick(known here as urinalysis) microscopy, culture and sensitivity are usually carried out.But after an individual has undergone self medication with antibiotics and in most cases still under medication while the diagnosis is being done.

  • Around here people depend mostly on over the counter drugs from medicine stores most especially antibiotics for treatment of upper respiratory infections and UTIs.

  • Here in Nigeria, antibiotics are also used for treatment of common cold without running any diagnostic test .

  • Brief, but informative presentations, I am really excited to be part of this course.

  • Here some facilities carry out diagnostic test such as PCR for HIV and GENEXPERT for Tuberculosis. Even though it is done in some laboratories only a few have the facilities and they serve as referal centers.

Hello, I am Manme from Jos plateau state,Nigeria. I am interested in learning more about the cause and prevention of AMR.

  • Hi, l am excited to be here and I look forward to adding more knowledge on AMR and the role of diagnosis in the prevention of AMR.

  • Looking forward to an exciting, educative and interactive session.Thank you.

  • Hello,Bacteria resistance to drugs is a major concern here in Nigeria, lack of response to treatment with antibiotics is on the increase on a daily basis. Therefore a knowledge of the cause of drug resistance and how to avoid them will be of tremendous help in preventing the occurrence of drug resistance.I am Go'ar Manme Yilji a medical Laboratory Technician and...
