    Hola, Me llamo Edel. Encantada!

  • I didn't know about adding the currency symbols, that's a great tip, thank you.

  • wildcards very good, I was looking up the name Trappe and thought the only issue would be using Trappe with no E - but I actually found a census record with it spelt Thrappe, meaning I found the census record for the family for 1911, I hadn't found it before I couldn't understand why! Never ever heard of it being spelt this way. Must have been a mistake

  • The names Trapp(e), Reynolds, Walsh(e) and O'Kane/Kane are of interest to me

  • Thank you for making this course available.
I thought it was interesting that people sometimes tended to lie on the census about their ages and marital status. It has taught me to take it information on all sources with a pinch of salt.

  • I find one problem is names being changed, my mother's surname has a E in it but her grandparents seem to have spelt it with no E. Also, in Ireland, it seems many people were known by their 'middle' name and not their Christian name or First name, or for example, would be called Nancy instead of Anne or Mary Anne, so what you knew them as might not be the...

  • Hi all, my name is Edel from Ireland. I used to work as a librarian, so this type of course is a natural fit for me. My mother recently expressed an interest in researching our family tree and her name is quite unusual in Ireland, Trappe (although Trapp without an e is on some documents), so we would love to figure out where her ancestors came from. Looking...

  • Thanks you, I really picked up a lot from this course which I can use in my job.
    Thanks so much

I chose Stefano, a young man who is trying to get in shape for the London Marathon.
Firstly, I would identify the Asda products that may interest him to prepare for his marathon. eg. healthy food, fruit and veg, protein, nuts and seeds bottle water, sports drinks.
I would use banner advertising on the a running blog website or perhaps the website that...

  • I don't know of that many foods are are referred to as 'Super', the only one I know is usually referred to as a Superfood are Blueberries, I eat those everyday, as I hear they are high in antioxidants. I drink a lot of tea, and have heard that it too is high in antioxidants, although I'm not sure if that is true or if it is limited to only certain types of...

  • Hi,
Thank you for developing this course, my reasons for joining this course - firstly, I am interested in nutrition and making my diet as healthy as I can.
Secondly, I am interested to know if certain superfoods are helpful for certain ailments or conditions, if there are superfoods that is high in certain chemicals that is good for a certain condition...

  • Thank you very much for putting together this course. I really enjoyed it. I am not a nurse but have an interest in nursing. I keep up to date by subscribing to various mailing lists and reading articles from nursing journals

  • One thing would be stopping the spread of infection such as increased hygiene etc as well as education on this. This is still so important as infection is so common in hospitals. Something as simple as adequate hand hygiene can help stop the spread of superbugs for example.

  • District Nursing or Public Health Nursing and Community Nursing as it is known in Ireland is in place in Ireland and can only get stronger with the increasing aging population and the hospital overcrowding.

  • As others have said, the disease spread due to lack of adequate means for washing and also perhaps lack of education on the importance of boiling laundry to get rid of the organisms.

  • Hi, I'm Edel, I live in Dublin, I am not a nurse but I work in the area of nursing education. Looking forward to the course

  • Hi Stathis, I suppose the activity was very short, I think you could have a few more examples to try. The focus was on print journals and the Harvard referencing system, perhaps a few other referencing styles could be mentioned or perhaps how to find articles by searching rather than having the reference given to you.

  • I watched the RLO what are journals, I thought it was very clear and concise and would be so useful for any student who is new to using an academic library.

  • Nice to meet you all, thanks for making this course available.

  • Hi I'm Edel, living in Dublin, I'm a librarian working in the health sector. I would love to learn more about course design

  • Hi everyone, I'm a librarian. I have some experience of doing online courses and elearning. Most of my experiences have been positive. The one drawback I find is that sometimes it is hard to keep the momentum going when you don't have to do each lesson at a certain time and place. But this flexibility is a huge advantage, I think elearning can sometimes...

  • I think children should be involved in reporting how they find health states but children might find it hard to answer questions accurately - perhaps their perception and judgement on some of the questions would be quite different than that of an adult, perhaps they child could be interviewed or they could do the questionnaire along with a parent to ensure...

  • Very easy to understand but I found it was very short. There may be other areas that could be surveyed as well.

  • It's very hard to give an honest answer unless you were actually in the situation, in the example of extreme pain - It is hard to say how you would react if you were in the situation, you might want to stretch out your life for as long as you could, there is no way of knowing how bad the pain would feel to you unless or until you were actually in it, so you...

  • I would use the generic one as it might give a broader scope of answers relating to psychological coping etc

  • I think one to one interviews are very valuable. Focus groups can also be beneficial but sometimes when people hear other people's answers, the responses may end up more homogeneous, listening to others ideas might influence what the person says.

  • My understanding of health would be that of the World Health Organisation.
Health should encompasses physical, mental and social. When all this is considered it could be quite rare for anyone to be completely healthy for any reasonable stretch of time! Meaning that health services will always be in high demand....

  • Hi everyone, I have a background in working in health libraries, I have an interest in health systems in different countries and would like to learn more through doing this course

  • Hi everyone, I'm from Ireland looking forward to the course, I have a interest in health systems, have worked in health libraries

  • Great video, so much information fitted into just 4 minutes.

  • Hi everyone, my name is Edel, I'm from Ireland, I#m working in an environment where statistics are presented on a monthly basis, I would like to pick up some ideas for presenting data.

  • Don't miss any lectures, start early with any assignments that you are given

  • Asking library staff for help is a good idea

  • Try to get up early, plan the day, don't spend too much time photocopyin notes etc, I used to see people in college spending hours at the photocopier collecting too much materials and leaving themselves short on time to read them.

  • I am most familiar with Harvard, it seems to be the most used style in universities and colleges in Ireland. If you needed more information on styles you could check you college library or their website , they might have a referencing style guide for your college.

  • You incorporate others ideas to show that you have read what's already been research and written about in the topic, that will ensure that you have a broad understanding before you formulate your own opinions and ideas. You have to acknowledge others so people will know where the theories and ideas have come from and you are not claiming ideas as your own

  • Thank you, looming forward to starting the course

  • Maybe keep the file saved on your computer with the a date that it was created maybe keep a copy of emails that were sent between the groups with the attachments of the different versions of the documents.

  • I suppose at the first meeting clearly decide and define everyone's roles.
Sophie should ask the lecturer for advice it is unfair if she gets a poor mark if she would have gotten a good mark had she done the whole assignment in her own.
While groupwork can be frustrating, it is a good experience as in the real world, there will be many situation where...

  • Yes, I think if you have the inclination to cheat in college you could be more inclined to cheat in other situations. Perhaps somethings though some ignorance means that people don't realise that they are cheating...for example if you let others do more than their share in a group project, you might not see that as cheating exactly but you will probably earn...

  • All very important values. I couldn't pick one, I think they all are needed to result in integrity

  • I would associated academic integrity with having good referencing skills. To give credit to other authors work and quotes and to not pass off other people's ideas as your ideas.

  • 1.I understand what is meant by the term academic integrity.

2.I am familiar with the values that underpin academic integrity.

    3.I know what plagiarism is.

4.I know what I have to do to avoid academic dishonesty.

I am confident in all I am a qualified librarian but as I work am not currently working in a library I wan to keep my skills up...

Hi all, thanks for designing this course, looking forward to getting started.

  • Hello I'm from Ireland I interested in academic writing and referencing skills. The system I am most familiar with is Harvard and also the Endnote referencing tool but I would like to learn more.
Fact about Ireland... we have a great rugby team;)

I have eaten very little fish until this year the only fish I would occasionally eat would be cod. I have recently starting eating tuna and had tune once last week.

  • Food pyramid, 5 fruit and veg a day, as well as guidelines there are various media campaigns such as a TV campaign on portion size as well as a campaign on grocery shopping ie. easier to say no to children in the supermarket if they want junk food, at least these foods won't be in the house then.

  • I definitely get 5 a day during the weekdays but I find I lapse a bit at the weekends.

  • Sustainability to me means that you should be able to carry on current level of production but nor to a point where it would mean damaging resources for future use.

  • I think that confectionary, cakes etc need to be looked at as 'treats' again rather than something you can eat any day. Supermarkets have made buying chocolate, biscuits etc so cheap that is hard not to put some in your trolley 'in case you have visitors'. If these items were more expensive I think people might buy less of them. But the money make on the tax...

I enjoyed the video, it did address that it is a behavioural disorder rather than a physical need for a specific substance. I also hadn't though of the term 'marginal overeating' before. If this is the case I guess any people aren't even aware that they are overeating. I suppose this is why there are TV campaigns on portion size. I would have always...

  • I think food can be addictive, people can crave certain foods or types of food, and cannot rest until they have this food. When food is using for providing comfort I think it can become addictive. Perhaps some people find taste addictive

  • Thanks for making this course available, enjoying it.

  • Edel Reynolds made a comment

I don't take any but my diet is quite balanced.

  • Butter, used to use low fat spread but heard that these contain transfats

  • Bread, potatoes, cous cous and breakfast cereals such as wheetabix

  • Protein supplements only helpful if you are not eating enough protein rich foods

  • I fall into very high risk, I expected this. I have been trying to lose weight for years but for the past year and a half I have been following weight watchers and have lost 26 lbs so at least my risk isn't as high as it was but there is still a lot of work to do!

  • Ireland has a very high obesity rate at present and projections state that by 2030 57% of Irish women and 48% of Irish men will have reached an obese state

  • I think our environment in the Western world anyway is partly to blame as convenience foods are so readily available. We can buy ready to eat meals easily and eating out is not a occasional occurrence anymore. There is never a shortage of food in the western world (unless for financially reasons), you don't need the 'thrifty gene'. It is highly unlikely that...

  • Energy, nourished, movement without pain

  • Hi, I just want to learn more about nutrition, I have an interest in eating and losing weight, so try to follow a healthy eating plan, I am hoping doing this course will encourage me to continue to eat healthily

  • I thought this course was very good. Everything was explained clearly and there were plenty of examples given and plenty of opportunity for practising. I feel a lot more comfortable with doing calculations now. Thank you very much for putting together a great course.

  • Yes I found the statistics very good, There were a good few terms that were new to me so it was good to get the chance to learn about them. Thank you for putting together a great course. I felt all the quizzes were a chore but I was glad when I did each one and realised that with a bit of patience I could complete them. Thank you!

  • I think learning the times tables again would be a good idea, it's a long time since I learned them and some of them would not com back to me quickly but I'm sure if I spent a few minutes on them every say it would make a numeracy test much easier. Also learning common percentages as fractions would give you a head start. Also I would agree that reading the...

  • I found the content was presented very clearly and once I took my time and read the question carefully I was able to do all of the quizzes. My confidence has definitely grown and I feel I would be able to answer any questions on percentages and ratios. The only part which tripped me up a bit was the currency conversions but I got them on the second attempt....

  • Hi, the last two videos aren't showing for me, the sound is playing but not the picture - not sure what I can do to fix this?
The content is great, even without the picture, thanks

  • I was surprised by the quizzes that I was actually able to work out the answers..I took my time and didn't rush. Looking forward to week 2

  • Thanks for the video, that is where I would go wrong in the past - by trying to rush things and end up with the incorrect answer..

  • I need to improve on currency conversions and also working quickly

  • I've only ever had to do one test while I was still at school, this helped to point out our strong points and weaknesses. When we got the results, a list of careers that matched your strengths was given to you.

  • I've only had to do one psychometric test just before leaving school - it was used for career guidance, the aim was to highlight our strengths and weaknesses and suggested careers that matched our strengths.

  • Thank you that has reminded of some things I had forgotten!

  • Date, time, percentages, rates, ranking, conversions - currency, metric conversions - length - feet to metres, multiplication and comparisons - eg. 5 times the length of a double decker bus, singles, doubles, interpreting numverical values from a graph

  • A numbers rhyme I remember from when I was child was ...when I was 1 I had just begun, when I was 2 I was good as new, when I was 3 I was hardly me, when I four ?..when I was 5 I was? now am 6 I'm as clever as clever I wish I could be 6 forever and ever.... Also one potato 2 potato...
From doing the exercise outlined in the previous page, I encounter numbers...

  • Hi everyone,
I am here to brush up on my maths skills. Maths was my worst subject in school, I always passed my exams but I struggled with it. I ended up doing a statistics module as part of my degree which I got on ok in as I spent a good bit of extra time studying it outside of the class. That was 10 years ago so I am a bit rusty now. Hoping to be more...

  • Hi Janette,
Thanks for the informative introduction, looking forward to getting started with the course.
