  • The last contract I signed was for a phone line. I think non lawyers come across contracts on a regular basis its just that sometimes we tend to accept agreements without reading the small prints or even realising what we are agreeing to is infact a legally binding document.

  • That's great. Looking forward to this course.

  • Hi my name is Taya Hughes. I am interested in learning a bit more about contracts so I am a better skilled business women.

  • college students - Instagram, YouTube, snap chat, tiktok, pinterest

young professionals - LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, twitter, pinterest

women over 40 - Facebook, Pinterest,, Twitter, LinkedIn

Facebook seems to be getting older, there is not as many young people using facebook as much as the older people. Pinterest is also getting younger and...

  • i'm generally confident about my body but over lockdown i have spent more time on social media and have found myself sometimes comparing my body and looks with some influencers and occasionally being triggered. I am however very self aware so anything that triggers me i don't go back to it. I'm not afraid to unfollow, turn off notifications etc

  • What having weight means is different depending on different cultures. eg. In some African cultures being curvy and of a bigger size is considered very attractive and a sign of a good life.

  • I'm reminded of Khloe Kardashian's recent issue with a picture that ended up on social media without being touched up.

  • I would say selling shares would be a good option. As one of the advisors said. Its better to own a small portion of something big that a big portion of something small.

Thank you for this course. So many nuggets to take away. An insightful and unique point of view. Love it all.

  • @RebeccaHollinger I'm happy for you.

  • Savile Row - Ozwald Boateng

  • me too

  • Can anyone please provide a link to the video aforementioned. Thanks

  • I wasnt able to locate the the process behind the creation of Balloon Venus Lespugue (Red), or access the viewing room. More details here would be helpful. Thanks.

  • I haven't been able to open them either

  • I've enjoyed week 1 and will be paying more attention to what's thrown at me in the media space relating to body image so I can help my young children develop a strong foundation of self.

  • I am the same. I unfollow anything that triggers my emotions in a negative way. I cant be off social media because I need it for business, but Im very intentional about what I do on social media and avoiding consuming any content that triggers me.

  • Dove absolutely !!! So so inspirational. I love the content that they are putting out.

  • Its definitely an inside job. It starts with me loving me and educating myself on the truth about identity then hopefully impacting others eg. I can educate my young children.

  • Its interesting to listen to Jameela talk about "becoming". I have followed her journey for a while as she always inspired me and also her love of fashion. I have noticed that she seems a much better human. She comes across like she has put in so much work on becoming whole. Everything she said made sense to me. I feel like i have been on a journey with her...

  • The fact that the aforementioned platforms and companies that are fueling the increase in problems associated with body image are owned by men. It makes a lot of sense now.

  • "These things are deliberately there to distract us, to give us something else to think about so that we’re not thinking about growing our businesses, our families, lives, our hearts and our minds." I really felt this.

  • This is really interesting and takes me back to the start of the course. I think to be able to create your global village its important to define both your personal style and brand style. Sometimes these are so different . You often find this with designers for the big fashion houses they are sometimes a different tribe from the brand. A good example of...

  • I couldnt agree more self care and self development are part of branding.

  • I definitely felt the emotional connection of Art Comes First just from watching the collection videos.

  • Im creating more than one brand. One of my fashion brands's tagline is "Explore your Identity" so we can celebrate female explorers throughout history for International Women's Day ( Month).

Another of my brands already has a manifesto which is all about Sustainable Fashion. My passion for activism means that I could also celebrate other activists that are...

Just watching the video I was able to get a feel of the emotions behind the inspiration without knowing the story of this collection. The music also added depth to my senses. Very well done.

  • Art, Fashion, Music . My passions.

  • Im reminded of the latest IVY PARK campagn with the song Icey by Melii

  • @NivaniSadhai thats awesome

  • Week 1 has been nothing short of inspirational. So much to reimagine, thank you.

  • I always knew and use the phrase "...there is nothing new under the sun" but this statement below took it 360 degrees onto a new level. Inspirational indeed.

Tradition, inheritance, nothing is new under the sun. We study what was done before us so that it can inspire the future. It’s the 360 circle of creativity.” - ART COMES FIRST

  • Interesting to see this. I only just came to a realisation a few days ago that as a child I was really good at art and I never worried whether someone was going to like what i created. I just created because that was my nature and yet many people liked what i created especially one of my teachers. So I recently came back to that awareness and had to let my...

  • This is really interesting. Knowing yourself. Art comes First to me is a phrase that connects with whom I am at the very core of my being. So much to digest from this clip.

  • i engage with mostly fashion, a bit of music, a bit of comedy from my firm favs and personal development clips. I have also found that over lockdown I've engaged with a few relationship coaches.

  • Art is the opposite of war.

Luck and coincidence only meets preparation. You don't get lucky if you haven't prepared yourself to get lucky. Coincidence is the universe telling you that we've got you. Just my own reflection.

I really enjoyed this section. I'm definitely one that likes to use my hands to express myself although I am always conscious of not over using them in front of the camera.

    Background

    All elements of perception

  • Hi I'm Taya from the UK. I'm a gospel singer among other things and have always had an interest in music but never took time up until last year to learn more about music. I am currently working on a gospel EP.

  • The Wear2 project is doing a fantastic job. We need more of this type of innovation, it will really help solve some of the problems of textile waste.

  • It was such a breath of fresh air browsing through Gabriela Hearst's website and seeing what the brand is doing. A brand with a purpose. I hope to see more fashion retailers on the high street with a purpose that involves people, planet and not just profits. There is currently so much greenwashing on the high street, it may fool a few unsuspecting consumers...

  • @BenWood Yes, I look around now and can see where my other designer friends are going wrong with their branding, obviously its not my job to be criticising anyone's efforts unless they ask for my opinion. So yes, its really exciting for me working in branding for my own vision

  • The internet has definitely had an impact on fashion innovation within the retail industry. There is so much information now available to help consumers make more informed decisions about what to buy. There is also a great opportunity for retailers to listen to their customers ie. through social media and also gaining insights into the consumer behaviours...

  • Just looking at the M & S website under sustainability - clothing. There is little information on how they plan to use more sustainable fabrics in their clothing. There is no information on any particular unsustainable fabrics they have banned or that they don't use or plan on not using in their products. That was quite a shock, I expected more. Moving forward...

  • The invention of sustainable fabrics and bio degradable fabrics as an alternative is a great invention. Polyester and a lot of other synthetic fabrics release micro fibres with every wash which end in the sea then back up into our food chain.

  • I think the purpose of these satirical cartoons was for entertainment. Nowadays we have fashion bibles like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Tatler magazine etc

Fashion shows can be used to satirise fashion

When I think of extreme trends. I'm reminded more of the annual Met Gala with a different theme every year that allows designers and attendees to be extreme...

  • Its interesting to note how fashion has evolved over the centuries. We go from fashion being influenced by the Royal family and bourgeoisies to Social media influencers in the present day. The high street is now bringing out new collections every month or shall i say was, pre c19. I really think there will be a shift within the fashion industry post C19. The...

  • I agree. I felt I also wanted to see more detail since the course is about "fashion".

  • @PronobDas thanks for that. So its an estimate based on the virtual water concept. I've learnt something new. Thanks

  • The fabric choices have made a difference. The portrait has more stiffness, maybe using a duchess satin would have helped make the dress drape with a bit of stiffness. The recreated garment draping seems a lot more light weight. Also I think applique of the tudor roses and ribbon detail on a tulle fabric and then attaching the appliqued tulle onto the duchess...

  • 1590s: Naturalistic embroidery is fashionable. Very interesting to note that its still very much a part of couture, an artisian skill that ought to be preserved.

  • Thank you. I understand SDG's and how they relate to fashion more than i did before.

  • Great course thank you. I would be interested in learning more about biodegradable fabrics/ textiles, an understanding of how the fabric works. Does it mean that if I designed and produced a garment to last a lifetime with biodegradable fabric, it will still start to degrade itself after so long. I'm curious on the subject of how these sustainable fabrics...

  • Liked this section, very encouraging. You don't need to be perfect to make a difference. Start with the areas that you are most emotionally connected to between yourself and your wardrobe. I hate waste and over consumption , that is the area I will start with. Its also good to know that there is so many things we can all do to bring that much needed awareness.

  • After doing the assignment in week 3 based on an item of clothing I was wearing it became clear to me that one of my favourite brands needs to be more transparent. I will be writing a letter to Ted Baker. My silk pyjamas say on the label 100% nylon made in Cambodia. When I went on the Ted Baker website they had a sustainability policy and goals to be achieved...

  • Transparency is key. It creates a culture of accountability.

  • Ye I agree, its a collaborative effort .

  • Can anyone please explain how a tshirt needs more than 2700 litres of water to produce? I am aware that cotton is a water thirsty crop but how much of that cotton is needed for a tshirt and how do we end up with the figure of 2700 litres? I just want to be clear with the facts. Thanks

  • I wanted to choose 2 options . I went for government and policy makers as they have the power to pass legislation etc, secondly fashion brands and retailers doing their part would result in a trickle down effect amongst the consumers, citizens etc. The truth is , we all need to do something ,collectively it will amount to something with a huge impact.

  • Looking forward to the webinar

  • I have enjoyed this course and have come away with so much and more. A clear "idea" for my fashion brand. I already knew what I wanted but the course helped me articulate it. Now I need to figure out what a customer experience looks like for my new brand. Thank you.

  • Every week had so much value for me, but if I had to choose what really struck a cord with me was week 3 and 4.

  • I noticed they all seemed to share a common purpose and vision. Wolff Olins sounds like a cool company. I'm not here to work in branding but to build my own fashion brand. Who knows maybe one day when I am big and want to make a global impact I can consult Wolff Olins. I believe what I have learnt here has added so much value to what I do.

  • Personal action plan - DONE

  • Loved this video. Before starting this course I struggled when it came to defining my fashion brand. Now, in the final week of this course I have been able to work through this video, define my brand purpose and put my action plan down with no struggle at all.

  • Very interesting analysis although it seems that most V5 brands are tech brands, it would be interesting to see how the V5 concept translates amongst other brands not tech related. It seems to me that would make them V4 brands instead.

    2. What part of the fashion supply chain are the people written about working in? Textile Production - agriculture
    3. What is the article’s main focus, what topics or issues does it highlight? The direct and indirect effects on children's lives.
    4. What did you learn about the...

  • An estimated 70% of the world's cotton is grown by small holder farmers that is interesting to know.

  • I totally understand what you are saying, the same happens in Africa.

As they said in the above article I quote "...due to complex, systemic and geopolitical reasons, which are too vast to cover in this article but worth exploring outside of this course"

There are definitely other complex and socioeconomical issues that unfortunately give rise to...

  • Yes that's true, even when we think about how the microbeads that have come from textiles and clothing can end up back in our food supply chain through eg. fish , sea salts and some reports even mention beer.

  • Yet another informative video. I got on this course to help me with my own brand and I've been able to make so many notes using my own fashion brand as the case study.

  • Enjoyed this video. Really got so much value out of the diagram.

  • I think Generation Z are the first generation growing up fully aware and concerned about future generations and the impact of our actions to the planet and people. Gen Z are probably the least likely to need convincing about making more sustainable choices. They however will need convincing that you are as sustainable as you claim as they are demanding...

  • 1.What does ‘sustainable fashion’ mean to you?
Sustainable Fashion means fashion that has been consciously produced taking account of its impact on people and the planet. This starts from the design stage all the way through the supply chain right up to after consumption.

    2. What topics do you associate with the term ‘sustainable fashion?’
    Eco fashion,...

  • Hi everyone. I am a fashion designer based in the North West of England - Cheshire. I joined this course because i want to stay informed about Sustainable fashion as I am very passionate about this subject and I believe with the right knowledge I can be part of the fashion designers finding solutions rather than creating problems within the fashion supply chain.

  • i think when you know who your customer is, you can design the customer's experience based on that. It goes back to the butterfly diagram whereby your idea is defined by whats wrong with the world and whats special about the brand. Somewhere in between those 2 is where you can create a customer experience based on your idea.

  • The role of design in branding should be about solidifying the brand identity. The brand should first decide how they want to communicate, differentiate, resonate, if they are interested in migration and co creation. Then the design of the logo can be based on the outcome of that criteria.

  • I found this video very helpful but would have loved the PDF attachment, I was taking notes and could't see all the details on the wheels especially sensoral assets, which is what i wanted to see the most

  • I found this video very helpful

  • Loved watching this TED talk. So much to learn from it. The why is very important.

  • I've enjoyed the content of this course do far.

  • Which brands do you think have the greatest commercial impact? Nike, Coca Cola, Apple, Microsoft, Shell,

Which have the greatest social impact? TOMS,

    Which achieve both? Nike

  • I am less brand loyal than I used to be because nowadays there are so many options and alternatives. So many other factors come into play when shopping besides the brand eg. the pricing, who has the best deal, best option, convenience and even the best shipping offer when shopping online etc

  • I think brands with a purpose are more relevant today and going forward. As much as investors are still very much more concerned about the profits, we see more brands with a purpose that have emerged slowly over the last 10years, but we also see a more conscious consumer who cares about human beings and the planet and will buy into brands that care about...

  • I want to gain more insight into branding so I can make sure I am on the right path with my own fashion brand

  • It seemed to me they all connected with their favourite brands at different levels, some had a functionality connection, childhood connection or emotional connection. Their favourite brands all met their need for connection in one way or the other.

  • Hello Taya from England , I am a self employed Fashion Designer

  • Thank you . I have thoroughly enjoyed the course, learning fashion theory, most of my time is spent creating fashion so it was great to be able to put my style of designing in a particular box based on modernity.

  • @AnfisaDidenko there is nothing new under the sun. Yes fashion is a cycle. In terms of being original and creative I think it goes back to the whole topic of modernity, what type of designer one is will determine how creative they can get. Also as Paul Smith mentioned in his video, to be a successful brand you need a good balance between creativity and...

  • interesting technique

  • Nowadays I think "the magic of the signature" and "the arbitrary value creation" can be achieved by most emerging designers but "celebratory function" and particularly the "cycle of consecration" is where new designers will struggle.

  • Very inspiring story of Hermes

  • An understanding of Veblen's theory is still relevant in contemporary fashion because it helps in translating the way fashion is evolving today. Without an understanding of this theory its harder to translate current shifts in fashion that will be tomorrow's theories. It goes back to the old adage " there is no new without old". Just my view on this.

  • Whats great for the emerging designer that take sustainability issues seriously is that social media seems to support and embrace those brands more and more. So like he said on the video, "traditional PR tactics" are not the only way to sell your collection this day and age. I also like what he mentioned that designers show designs that are not made for...

  • I cant believe I got all the quiz right considering how complex I found the language used in most of this chapter. Very interesting though. If anyone can please explain the following statement in simple terms, if possible. I would greatly appreciate your take on it. Thanks in advance.

"Plastic semiotics escapes the mere lexicalization of the signifier to...

  • Very inspiring story with some little nuggets of advice for emerging designers or those that want to create a collection. Love the use of colour and some of his prints have become iconic Paul Smith prints over the years.
