  • 5. Music

  • This is a good material for vocabulary through listening sub skill: words like squeaking, dripping, straw noise and so on.
the practice would be matching and ordering.

  • The films are in Spanish...

  • Me too

  • I need a pdf. Of the materials to download for later studies.
    Please make it available.

  • I hope so. and thank you Carolyn.

  • Hi, this is Behzad Limooie. I’ve got CELTA and I need to improve in assessment to empower my knowledge in the area.

  • My passion is equality in education and eligibility on employment.
People with more competency, skillfulness, knowledge and capability should be allocated a better position either at schools or workplace. Course material is always dismissed from the mind of students and other factors rather than eligibility are considered at workplace. For this we need to...

  • we are here to discover what it is about.

  • Hello, this is Behzad from Iran.
I am an English language teacher and musician.
I am also a university lecturer.
it's great to learn here with you all.

  • What I can say about my mother tongue pronunciation of English words is that: Farsi speakers, who are not educated to pronounce English correctly, try to pronounce every single alphabet either consonants or vowels as far as they can. On the other hand, if they get the input they can pronounce all the diphthongs and vowels correctly and they are also good at...

  • @SanchitaRobey here the most influential variable is puberty.
Before puberty children do not ask much and do not crave for learning the rules, maybe because everything is like a game in their eyes . After puberty, everything changes for the learner. They think they are grown up and need to prove their ability in the world of adulthood.
    Nowadays, as you said,...

  • @GiovanaPerini-Loureiro For lower levels, in pair works or group works learners need to collaborate in their first language to justify their decisions and answers. However, when they are at a higher level of language competency we instruct them to use the language.

  • @SanchitaRobey Dear Sanchita,
I do not believe if someone learns something they won’t be able to use it. The difference is when you learn something explicitly, you will always control the process and the outcome consciously and you will think and use. However, If you learn something implicitly, you will use it without any hesitation and your focus will be on...

  • She is the one who wears those two mythologic rings with strange makeup on her rough face sitting in front of me. She is the one who spends money on fortunetellers every Sunday.

  • I am a night owl because I afraid of mosquito’s sting. This insomnia will kill me next week this time in the morning at 5.16. So to speak, not everyone can stay up for a month still not having a sense of dizziness. Not only because I afraid of their sting I know they watch me and they know I watch them too.

  • Obviously, the teacher is the reason for the provoked anxiety. We should remove the teacher first.
I am not sure I can give any suggestion for the context since the illustration in this dramatic expressionism fails me to think by changing one thing or two I can fix the situation. Let’s keep the story.

  • I was waiting to see someone gets killed or Nazis attack to the school to save poor children. It’s a horror story in fact.

  • I disagree.
In some conditions I feel like I need to inject some level of anxiety to the classroom especially when I see learners take my instructions for granted.
On the other hand, the learners who are too anxious are more introvert and silent ones who need to be identified. They are the ones who leave the course and never comeback and do not return phone...

  • It also includes: agency and learner training.

  • Silent learners are good listeners. I have this experience when conducting guided discovery they are more productive while more confident learners who speak more learn less because they talk about what they already know.

  • BEHZAD LIMOOIE made a comment

“No studies have convincingly shown that the knowledge of metalanguage results in more successful language learning”.
An A-Z of ELT, p.130, Scott Thornbury.

  • This is mechanical learning. It is a form of Grammar-translation method.

  • BEHZAD LIMOOIE made a comment

As Stephen Krashen said, leaning never become acquisition.
I disagree that language awareness becomes automatic in the learner.
I would rather to hear how the process is done in a classroom.
As a CELTA qualified teacher, I never focus that much on the grammar and my grammar input takes of 2 or 3 minutes in conducted by CCQ and not referring to the form more...

  • The aim of the task is not clear. there are two different tasks here: phrasal verbs and tenses. I reckon one of these should be a focus for a specific purpose. For instance, how we use tenses to refer to past and present to describe a situation in a social conversation context.
The proper question would be to determine which sentences refer to past or...

  • You are right. In comparison to a face to face class we do not know of their learning environment, who is beside them and what distract them. Do these variables help or not.

  • @GiovanaPerini-Loureiro That is true Giovana. For this a good teacher should always praise learners for what they know and are able to do whilst is noting their errors to address in later parts of the class without pointing on the learner who made that mistake.
And also, a good syllable designer knows about learners’ interests to provide engaging topics and...

  • At the lead-in stage:
I always ask some interesting and engaging questions. Some SS react voluntarily which I praise them. At the same time I watch other learners to learn why they do not engage. If I observe a sort of frustration or puzzled look I try to explain the context by some CQing from those not engaged.
    At the practice stages:
    When I am monitoring...

  • Reflecting and observing peers are two most important skills critical to every field of teaching.
I can not wait to revise and practice these two important technics.

  • BEHZAD LIMOOIE made a comment

Thank you for this wonderful short course.

  • I strongly believe teaching and learning are the sole way to happiness.
It is wonderful to see that you can build an ability in pupils from the scratch and provide autonomy in them.
We can teach learners and see how building their life by learning the technics taught in each lesson may happen.

  • I imagined you are going to teach us some criteria of speech and language phraseology and some model technics for presentations and so on on this course. Now with the information provided I have a more realistic approach towards the phenomenon. Also, I feel more comfortable and confident about the teaching process.
    Thank you.

  • Thank you very much for the valuable resources. I wish you could provide a link to ResearchGate here.
    Thanks for this wonderful week.

  • @jeffstanford You are right Jeff. Also, the marks they give is affected by the marker’s testing competency and the place in which the test is taken. For example, in some developing countries the marker is not as much strict of the criteria in terms of speaking test in comparison to more cosmopolitan places. Further, some candidates reported there were a...

  • @GiovanaPerini-Loureiro Honestly, language competency in teaching music is not a great concern because you always are able to convey the message through playing and this way yes, music helps you. However, people who major at music are different somehow. Their world and priorities are different. They need to be alone when working, studying and so on.

  • First I need to know about the learner’s language competency to learn at what level of literacy I should design the course. For this I need to run a placement test.
The module will start with general concepts and goes through details. I will instruct them through PPP at the beginning with lots of discussions and case studies and continue with TBL method...

  • Especially when students need to research in a wide range of literature or need to continue their study in upper levels overseas they need to have EMI classes.
Literature in domestic language is finite and is often a collection of international works. Thus, students need to master specific English phraseology or expressions in their area of study.

  • I agree.
Genre is a technical issue and is a demand in academic contexts while adopting a native-like accent can include a range of language such as slang, colloquial or informal. Moreover, academicians, either students or lecturers, have to pass a course or test of EAP prior to admission.

  • From the segments we studied in this course I conclude that as far as the message is conveyed accuracy is not an urgent demand.
However, in my opinion when the input is presented, when in a conference or webinar, or writing of any kind whether on the board or in articles or assignment accuracy matters the most. On the other hand, in debates and collaboration...

  • Well that is not correct, because we use the language to translate music for the students and analyze the components of a written music while the meaning behind is transferred subconsciously.
The problem with music is that it is open to personal interpretations and has no precise meaning. The meaning it conveys is flowing and dependent to former and latter...

  • I generally disagree with first part of the text while focussing on communication rather language in a context in which teaching language is not a consideration is worth noticing. If we assume that students who participate in the class have a background of attending to some language courses, which is a correct assumption, they will always concern the grammar...

  • We can estimate that there is a direct relation between inputs and comments. When inputs are come in long and comprehensive texts the number of comments reduces. Lol.

  • Yes it is.
The most important part of teaching is building rapport with the learners and if they find a leak in the teacher’s perfection they loose trust which is the most important ingredient of building rapport.

  • In my opinion, communication is more important than accent. However, learners will lose trust if they recognise their instructor doesn’t adopt a native accent. This is a sign of proficiency of a teacher to have a self-awareness. Originality always matters.

  • I agree. Since the language has an origin and there are models and patterns to mime, idealist students will want to become more original than copying other accents like Chinese or Indians who also want to follow native’s accents. Even when learners watch films they adopt actors’ accents and learn from them.
On the other hand, in language courses we teach...

  • I reckon morphemes such as third person ‘s’ and uncountable nouns will vanish from grammar rules and, as is said in the video, this movement has already begun in ELF since simplicity will always overcome when majority is biased to simplicity.

  • It is said that internet was invented as means of communication for US arm force in world war i or ii. Now we use it to distribute jokes, news, photos and so on. Facebook was invented for some college students to have fun. Now the CEO is called to senate to take the responsibility of national security and even global security.
Whatever the EMI aims at now or...

  • The EMI is a pretty young subject to many in a way that authorities have been being disconcerted with. And standardization must be a concern by cooperation of leading universities.

  • I reckon reaching a credibility for teaching subjects in academic environment is a need for scholars. For me teaching confidently at universities everywhere in the world is a demand.
Studying EMI at a standard level and receiving a reputable certificate as well as practicing is the way I feel I can achieve this goal.

  • @MiriamMansurAndrade thanks dear Miriam.
I hope we have a great time here.

  • @GiovanaPerini-Loureiro Hi Giovana, nice to meet you here.
Yes I do teach music in English and have translated some academic books in the area.
    Happy to help.

  • I am a CELTA qualified language teacher and also university lecturer in Music with over 20 years of experience.
I need to promote in my fields of study both in teaching music and language at universities, even though there is no way fo me to pay for the certificate at present. We may find a solution to address the issue.

  • I genuinely enjoyed the course.
It is really informative and helpful for people from any walks of life and I recommend it.
Most importantly you provided a free certificate which is very meaningful especially for those who are not able to pay for it.

  • Hi, I’ve got CELTA too. Happy to join together.

  • Hi, what do you teach?

  • I was unable to watch the video. However I can grasp the concept.
I believe self reflection is a good asset which can be written at the end of each session together with getting and giving feedback, peer correction for different tasks during the session.

Although preparation courses are compelling, provided one is not at the competency level, it will be confusing and weighs down the candidate.
The most important difference in teaching and learning on general courses and preparation ones is the difference between learning and acquisition. While we as teachers need to focus on language acquisition in general...

  • @jeffstanford Yes, Jeff. The validity of the test is questionable. Since, if you take the test twice, you get two different results regarding whether the materials are familiar to you or not. Also, your grade depends on who is assessing your papers and and who is the examiner in the speaking test and the test result is not disputable.
    What IELTS trainers do...

  • What a big philosophical question! It resembles deciding on whether to throw the atom bomb or not. It is like the question of: to be or not to be.
I strongly believe tests are essential for human growth. The push, stress and the time spent to prepare for the test transform us into a completely different person. After taking a test, whether passed or failed,...

  • In a broader sense, test, content of the test, examiner and the testing environment do not come in only one shape.
We have been tested a lot and we will be by everybody we are and have been connected to in some way. We have failed and passed the tests uncountably.
In this sense, we crave for tests all the time to get approval of parents, loved ones,...

  • Obviously it imposes a stressful condition to the society and I believe it is a globalization policy in which companies are able to control and manage people.

  • Elana Shohamy,
Success in test= success in life, (which is a fact).

    Glenn Fulcher,
The outcome of tests and opportunities in the society are two different things (which I believe they are dependent).
The notion of equality in receiving education is a weak idea since it is connected to socioeconomic background (which as we know there is no equality in...

  • I think safety has been the most concern of setting forward a hard language test.

  • As far as I know IELTS exam is an intellectual test and the focus is mostly on capability rather relativity for the test has time restrictions and the repetition of the questions are limited. More importantly there are 15 types of question and answers which mostly are not experienced in real life or academic environment by test takers.
    The sample test ...

  • I believe the reason behind this is to accept more genius and sharp minded working class into their country to take advantage from them in many ways.
The content material of the tests is not a consideration while the outcome is. This is why tests such as IELTS are not reliable tests since depending on the content one may score differently within the same...

  • @AaronMcCully I do not reckon the accident is the reason for disconnection, because radio has nothing to do with the engines.
The problem is with all those ATCs interfering from different places and out of protocols and regulations at the same time e.g. speaking Russian.
They should have stayed quit and listened to the pilot speaking to the closest ATC....

  • Working with trades and crafts people is really har for both construction companies and consumers since they are not always educated people and most of the time they do not care for the values the employer cares.
