  • Her rivalry with Elizabeth the Virgin Queen has been passed down over the years because of the contrast in personalities, their colourful lives , marriages/ non marriage, plots and general skulduggery of the times. Mary became a symbol for Scottish nationalism and the mother of the King who eventually united the two realms . Though there is still great rivalry...

  • I am most aware of Mary from how dhe has been portrayed in film and literature and through watching many documentaries. She was very brave at the moment of her execution according to eyewitnesses.

  • I'm Viv a retired librarian living in Hertfordshire UK. This course was mentioned by students on the Hidden York Futurelearn Course. As I am interested in the Tudors I thought I would sign up for this as Mary tends to get a bad press and portrayed as a woman to be pitied in many English publications. I love Futurelearn and Coursera and have done many courses...

  • Barrbaric punishment carried out in public to dissuade others. Her faith sustained her and those watching seemed to admire her resolution, so her martyredom may have convinced others of the validity of the old religion. However I am sure this adherence to catholicism would still be practised in secret for fear of gossip and state punishment..

  • The catholic Church with its magnificent cathedrals had been a key part to religious life prior to the Reformation so was long established. Some people felt that their souls were in peril if they switched faith. Yet during the time of Queen Mary 1 protestantism was outlawed and penalties for not conforming severe. I think some of the people would be confused...

  • She was pressed to death because of her catholic faith, which was regarded as committng treason against the King.

  • The Pilgrimage of Grace was an uprisong against the new religion which took place in Yorkshire. People longed for the familiarity of the latin mass and belived that the Protestant religion put their souls in jeopardy. The Rising was violently suppressed and the leaders publicly executed. Many ordinary poor people including children were also hanged for daring...

  • We do not use the word heretic very much in theis country in the 21st Century and there are only asmall percentage of the population who attend church. In the Tudor period although people were persecuted for their religious beliefs much of this was done for political reasons rather than than because someones soul was in peril. The Tudor claim to the throne...

  • Hand to mouth existance for many of the inhabitants. Poor diet, disease and high infant mortality led to poor standard of living. Cathedrals being built however to contrast with crowded living conditions. Very little poor relief apart from the Church and and many physical punishments for breaking the law. • Mr Angelino and his family may well be concerned that the change in direction of his care means that he doesn't have a lot of time left. Nobody can predict how much time he has left but the prognosis is not good If they have not had a discussion about wills or intervention, attitudes to pain relief or what type of funeral he might like (further down the line)...

  • For me Palliative care means end of life care. Following the wishes of the person at the end of their life and their family (if known) regarding intervention and pain relief. This care may take place in hospital at home or in a Hospice. I am not sure if medical staff can overide the wishes of the family if the person concerned has not written a living will...

  • Thank you for referencing Dr Mannix's books which I have just downloaded. Unfortunately many people are not able to discuss death and dying . It is almost a taboo subejct now. However having these discussions about end of life care, making a will and being aware of a loved ones wishes will be beneficial when the time comes to say goodbye.

  • . In my experience, people tend to sleep a lot more, appetite declines, they may become more confused/or stop speaking altogether..
