Very interested in human settlements and on the way to build the cities we need, especially in sub-saharan Africa.

Location Abuja,Nigeria

Activity

  • Citizen centred approach to planning will go a long way in shaping our cities. Abuja is a new city, but i still wonder how its was designed without consideration for an effective public transport, it is gradually becoming a chaos.

  • devolution brings governance much closer to the people, as such planning...be it physical, economic or social is much easier at a lower level than at the highest level. I am referring here to the bottom-top approach instead of the usual Top-down approach in most African countries. the thirst to control wealth and corruption will hardly allow for proper...

  • urban governance for me is the fundamental issue affecting planning in most African cities. looking forward to the lectures.

  • clearly, urban regeneration programme through the introduction of social mass housing schemes will go a long way in redefining our slums in Africa. If you travel round the world in developed countries, you find social housing in highbrow areas, so this approach can be integrated into our housing and urban development policy, cos most of this slums are found in...

  • There is a need for government to have a more people centred approach towards handling the issue of these slum dweller. I see a situation where government properly plan the slums that are habitable and re-allocate same to the slum dwellers that have the capacity to develop them to a certain standard. Or a government initiative on affordable social housing to...

  • Well this is what I call the suppression of the urban poor, out of experience... the urban rich are the actual tax evaders.

  • dependency is very visible on the map, with the formal sector mostly relying on the informal sector for inputs.

  • prior to this lecture, i had been thinking of how to end informal land markets, which results in serious speculation in Nigeria. But then the formal method of acquiring land is very cumbersome filled with bureaucracy and lack of transparency. Govt on the other hand is losing billions in Taxes that is suppose to be used for additional infrastructure, the...

  • I do understand and appreciate this discussion on what is seen as informal and formal in a cityscape. Well the thing we are missing in this conversation is the level of corruption in our system that permits favoritism by government officials and the lack of education by most of the urban poor to even understand their basic rights as it relates to the city. I...

  • i absolutely agree with the author, the intertwined nature of the formal and informal sector is very visible in our daily lives in Africa. The challenge is how to draw the line in defining where does formal begins and where does informal starts. Defining this yardstick will go a long way in helping government policies to thrive in the ever growing informal...

  • While Terrorism globally has been mostly linked to the Islamic faith, the UK has seen it from both sides...looking at the IRA, so adding the non-violent to the mandate of the PREVENT programme might certainly prove problematic.. because it will infringe more on the fundamental rights of innocent citizens who are affiliated to a certain faith.

  • The need for empirical evidence as to why radicalisation occurs in the first instance is very critical to the studies of terrorism and security. There is a need to study deeper human cognitive reasoning in understanding radicalisation.

  • Radicalisation is the process by which an individual or a group of people are indoctrinated into certain beliefs or values that are not in tandem with values that are widely accepted by larger society. Consequently, radicalisation leads to hate and violence, hence the aggressive fight by governments to combat radicalisation in all its forms, religious, ethnic,...

  • I work in the formal sector as a public servant. Restaurants that provide us Lunch in the office are mostly in the formal sector, because they are registered entities that pay taxes. I also use Mason, plumbers, electricians and Laborer's that are artisans to support my building needs, who are mostly in the informal sector as they do not pay taxes but...

  • This is a brilliant idea that i believe needs to be explored further in the African context to see how it can strive to mitigate our infrastructure deficit.

  • Radicalisation occurs where people are coerced into believing on a certain ideology that is mainly unpopular, which can lead to hate and violence. Governments are more concerned with radicalisation because most of it is based on religious and ethnic beliefs, which are very difficult to combat.

  • State Agents can either be Public Servants or Private Companies.

  • Counterterrorism are the strategic measures taken by a state to either detect, stop or retaliate against state aggressors. This is mostly carried out by agents of the state.

  • Territorial Integrity, Equality and Freedom. However counter terrorism measures result in the invasion of all these norms both by home security agencies and foreign states.

    the power of knowledge

  • Yes but the push and pull factors need to be taken with all sense of seriousness by the state. Especially the Push factors.

  • I am dumb founded by understanding that political motive is the key in establishing whether violence and criminality can be labelled as a terrorist act or activity or not. However from my view point... Any violence that results in creating fair, which eventually leads to casualties should be labelled as a terrorist activity.

  • This Right Wing Extremist have existed for a long time with little attention by government on how to combat this menace. I can cite for sure the attacks on foreigners by Skinheads in Germany, especially Eastern Part, now there even gaining seats at the table in the parliament, which is very sad. Now as they grow spreading their white supremacist ideals...If...

  • It is very possible to distinguish an act of terror and other forms of violence. This is dependent on the view point of the event and the motives behind the action. it is subjective and hence the perception may be inconclusive.

  • The 911 attacks on the twin towers and the pentagon are a classical example of terrorist attack that shook the world. This was driven by the belief that the USA is usurping the powers of other nations most especially in the middle east and its unwavering support for Israel.

  • Absolutely... most of the attacks we see around or hear that are terrorist related do have a political motive e.g. Boko Haram, The Shiites, etc. while as rightly pointed out violence is what the Kidnappers and Armed Robbers do around this part of the world.

  • Political violence that destroys humanity is in no way an acceptable form of political change. Violence, Wars were used in the medieval age to annex Territories for economic gains....however in a 21st century world, dialogue and diplomacy should be the strategic tools for political change.

Very Interesting week... I am really happy to gain more knowledge

  • Personally, I agree with the invasion of Afghanistan, It is a home ground of terror, injustice, inhuman treatment, etc. So for the US to chase away the Extremist Taliban government from further suppressing the Afghan people and the imminent treat that their style of leadership pose to the free world is absolutely important. However, Iraq became a failed state...

  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation are private NGO,s that are dedicated to improving the well-being of humanity through various interventionist programs, i.e. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is actively involved in the fight against the deadly Malaria parasite in Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • The British in their quest for concur made several mistakes in amalgamation of territories. They demarcated areas with out regards for cultural identification rather their own economic interest. That is the genesis of most land disputes in british colonies. While i can understand the argument of the India state to lay claim over the kashmere territory, I can...

  • The question whether Natural resources is an inevitable source of conflict depends on the lens at which the issue is looked upon. First, if there is injustice in the management of the resources, then certainly the agitation for a fair share of the resources can not be suppressed, secondly, for a resources such as Crude oil that is very essential in the...

  • The recent Black Lives matter campaign that happened as a result of the death of George Floyd in America is evidence of how Technology has changed security, because it was the use of the Body Camera on the Officers that exposed the level of violence meted the victim. Similarly, modern American warfare deploys the use of drones that are remotely controlled to...

  • Conflict management in my opinion requires both local and External engagement to be efficient and effective. So states have a critical role to play in conflict mediation because it is they who understand the dynamics of their people from a closer perspective, while the External forces i.e. the UN can bring its multi-lateral experience across several areas to...

  • The invasion of Iraq as i call it is one of the most controversial foreign policy ever to be implemented by the US and its allies. The basis for the invasion were not grounded in facts and consequently the outcome became disastrous. The ousting of Saddam Hussain as the leader of the sovereign state of Iraq was a political blunder by the Bush regime, because...

  • The conflicts of the 21st century are mostly driven by cultural factors, which in effect have economic impact on individuals and nation states. This is happening through Extremism, Radicalization, Terrorism etc. This is what brought the Arab Spring, the Orange revolution and the Boko Haram in Nigeria.

  • The Iraqi war is the classical example of a recent economic war that happened in the world, while another recent war is the annexing of Crimea by the Russian Federation, which has been widely condemned by the international community. We also had the war in Liberia, Africa that had to do with the control of the countries resources, i.e. the Diamonds.

  • conflict results from a disagreement of either ideas or ideologies and sometimes interest. Conflict can be religious, tribal, ethnic, economic etc. there can be individual, group, state or international conflict. The result of a conflict can be violence leading to wars, disintegration and collapse.

  • In the interest of peace and security, it is only fair for governments to use diplomatic channels in resolving conflicts with aggrieved communities. Military solution in my own opinion should only be deployed against foreign aggressors not internal, especially when people are agitating over their birth rights.

  • political violence that is peaceful in nature i.e. protest against societal injustice are often times met with stiff resistance by the state apparatus... Again i cite most recent the Belarus case, I cite the George Floyds case that sparked the Black Lives matter campaign. At times a comment can lead to arrest in other political climes, so in essence freedom of...

  • The Rwandan genocide is the killing and massacre of innocent civilian population, the abuse of women and kids, which the world sees as an ethnic conflict, but in my opinion its a political violence that was orchestrated to achieve resource control.

  • The Rwandan genocide, where ethnic cleansing was used as act of political violence. We have the ISIS terrorist in the middle east, especially in Syria, who are waging war on the government of Bashir Al Assad in attempt to overthrown his government, they are claiming territories etc. The recent crack on protesters in Belarus is another act of political violence...

Our lives evolve around the issue of security. I have actually learnt quite a lot.

  • Well the narrative has changed for me personally, I understand that it goes beyond just being safe. The issue of security encompasses virtually all aspects of human life from a subjective and objective view point.

  • First of all the need for justice, equity and freedom must be guaranteed by governments (nation states) to avoid unnecessary conflicts and resistance that result in displacing people from their states. Secondly, where conflicts emerge, the world super powers must be quick to response to avoid the deescalation of events. And for countries that seek to control...

  • The biggest threat to humanity is politics. In other words bad governance, when the process by which leaders are selected is flawed i.e. free, fair and credible electoral process, where the people's choice and vote are subdued, then the vulnerability of that society is certain. A classical example is the Orange revolution, the Arab spring and the most recent...

  • The Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA is charged with the responsibility of coordinating all issues of security in Nigeria, while we have the Military formation, which has the Navy, Airforce and Army to protect the territorial integrity of the country. The Department of State Service deals with matters of internal security, especially as it relates...

  • The South China Sea conflict will hardly be resolved, especially due to the strategic and economic importance of the area. China will surely continue to lay claim and exercise more territories because of its military power in the region, while probably provoking international allies of its neighbors like the US, Australia and European nations who use the sea...

  • The Boko Haram insurgents that have been terrifying the North Eastern part of Nigeria and to some extent Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon are a classical example of a group of individual that pose a serious threat to socio economic well-being in sub-saharan africa. The state has chosen to use both diplomatic and military means to combat what they represent....

  • From my view point, what we commonly see around us is more of insurgency rather than terrorism, if terrorism is aimed at putting fair on the civilian population to effect change...then looking at what is happening in Iraq, Palestine, Libya and Nigeria to mention but a few is Insurgency. while i still don't understand the goal of a terrorist activity, if it...

  • Terrorism in whatever shape or form that results in the lost of innocent lives should and can not be tolerated. So in the humble opinion of Rt. Hon Jeremy Corbyn and other commentators, I beg to differ that the means and ways people express their political views i.e through acts of terrorism should be nonpunishable. Political expressions are to be guaranteed...

  • Security in my opinion means the act of feeling safe and secure against any form of aggression, suppression and or oppression. The right to freedom and liberty. This can also be in the form of political, social and economical security, which are agencies of my well-being as a human being.

  • looking forward to learning

  • Hi, My name is Sadeeq from Abuja, Nigeria. I have developed a lot of interest into understanding the workings of the intelligence community, because my country is faced with myriad security challenges and would like to understand the manifestation of these issues.

  • This raises the question of equality? how do we all become equal in the acquisition of a resources that belongs to all? We must guarantee the right of all to have access to land irrespective of gender, religion, ethnicity, class, etc.

  • The need to formalize the informal Land market can not be over emphasized, cos most of the urban problems are created as a result of this sector. We must have a concerted strategy to save the future of our cities.

  • It is clear that land has different meaning to different people and hence the way and manner that they relate to it will surely differ.

  • I hope this lecture will clarify the issues that surround the disparity in land allocation.

  • This has added to my body of knowledge, I have had the privilege of working in Lands department despite not having the academic background, but the experience brings to bare on this course, as such the course is very helpful.

  • In my opinion, lack of capacity building in most agencies that are charged with the responsibility of handling planning and land allocation is part of the reasons why diversity is not critically evaluated.

  • I think i can understand what the video tried to highlight, which is the effects of our social diversity in how we use land and how planners consider these factors when planning an area, etc. Unfortunately, as he rightly puts it and also as reflected in the previous notes, we tend to give these factors a natural occurrence rather what they actually reflect,...

  • Yes spatial injustice was a manifestation of the colonial era, but i still argue why haven't we as Africans come up with an equitable and justifiable solution to planning and land use

  • what this article demonstrates is the typical challenge faced by most sub-saharan African cities. I have experienced all the highlighted issues mentioned in this article, however i was not conversant with the history or the reason why we have Government Reserve Areas in our cities, now i totally understand. The question still remains why haven't we abolished...

  • The planning process as illustrated is a creative process, however the political dimension is what makes it a challenging task, which often times creates the dark side of urbanization, most especially in Africa.

  • Urban development for me refers to the socio-economic growth that is experienced in our cities as a result of industrialization, which results in population growth, infrastructure development, wealth generation, poverty, crime, etc.
Urban planning is the physical design of our cities by professionals to accommodate our needs for a conducive human settlement,...
