  • Whilst page views is a useful and popular metric it doesn't tell you about the user experience on that page, ie. was it the content the user was looking for and was it useful? But allied with length of time on a page it tells you more. A very short visit could mean it was the wrong page and the user has gone elsewhere quickly.

  • Maybe by analysing the search terms entered by users on the website - what terms or words are users searching with, are these terms taking them to the correct pages and tools on the site? Are they using terminology that is not reflected on page and text labels and links. Sometimes you can understand user needs without actually meeting them face to face.

  • For many smaller organisations (eg. charities, heritage, local government etc) a multi-disciplinary team as outlined above isn't possible meaning that whoever is responsible for managing and maintaining an online service has to aim at what is achievable with such limited resources.
