Hi, I'm Ella! I currently live in Lake Macquarie on Awabakal land to which I acknowledge the traditional custodians and pay my respects to elders both past, present and future.

I'm doing a bachelor of arts, majoring in film, media and cultural studies, minoring in sociology and anthropology. I chose sociology as I find the study of humans and their...

I wake up to an alarm every morning feeling groggy and head to the bathroom. After that, I make my bed whilst listening to music as to try and better my mood. I open the blinds and window in my room to let some light and fresh air in. I then have my breakfast and spend some time on my phone. After that, I get showered and dress, do my hair and pack my bag for...

  • I read for physical books pleasure a few times a week but I would say that I definitely do a lot of my reading digitally.

However, when it comes to university work I tend to read all the required readings online but I physically write all my notes on paper. I find that writing it down on paper allows me to understand the content more and I'm more likely to...

  • My nanna does the same!

Both theories are quite fascinating but I think I might be leaning more towards the theory of them being a memorial for someone. The article linked above is very interesting and includes some great information.

    Definitely a puzzling mystery!

  • I'm currently reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I bought it brand new as I had seen some reviews on it and wanted to read it. It's a paperback and quite thick so I have been taking quite good care of it

  • I tend to read a lot of physical books for leisure or enjoyment (e.g. novels, magazines, biographies, etc) as I find having a physical copy is a lot more enjoyable. I love being able to just pick up physical books and read them anywhere.

In contrast, however, when it comes down to university-required readings (e.g. textbooks, journal articles) I read them...

  • I found it interesting that the vote NO side tried to argue that by allowing the bill to pass, that traditional families and values will be destroyed. They made same-sex marriage seem like a sinful thing and would often humiliate and almost dehumanise members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Whereas on the flip side, the vote YES side just wanted marriage equality...

  • An example I can think of is Carol and Susan from the tv show Friends. Although there was some representation of an LGBTQ+ couple, there were still many stereotypes surrounding the couple and there was quite a lot of jokes made regarding their relationship and at the expense of Carol (e.g. in an episode Ross asks Rachel if she is even aware of Carol's surname...

  • This! All these stereotypes are spot on and they're still being used in mainstream films today!

  • Learning about the history of LGBTQ+ representation in films, especially with the development of the Hays Code, was quite interesting! I wasn't aware that it was only during the 80s and 90s that LQBTQ+ characters and storylines were becoming mainstream (although almost exclusively white, male, and upscale as mentioned in Film Comment - Still Looking).

    It...

I'm interested in learning about how accurately the LGBTQ+ community is represented and how these representations and other stereotypes have changed over time.

  • Very interesting article. Some great points are made

  • Very interesting approach!

  • Yes, I believe that visual knowledge can be an unreliable source. Due to so many different viewpoints and factors, it's hard to agree that a visual piece has the same meaning for everyone. Because a visual piece can be interpreted and read in many different ways, I believe visual knowledge can be extremely unreliable

  • To add on, I feel as though the term 'photographer' is being altered these days. Anyone with a quality camera on their phone is able to shoot a picture in under a minute and call themselves a photographer. So I wonder if eventually, the term photographer will lose its meaning and impact.

I've also seen recently that celebrity photoshoots and even weddings...

As a practicing photographer, I find the rise of digital cameras and having cameras on your phone extremely interesting. I own a digital camera and I have a fairly new model phone with a great camera and I find it amazing that I can snap a picture on both devices and the quality will almost be the same. It makes me feel as though the future of photography will...

  • Reihana has accurately represented the indigenous culture as opposed to what was shown in Les Sauvages de la Mer Pacifique. She represented the two cultures through a historic and factual standpoint and bought the two cultures together by having the Indigenous people and the Europeans share their culture with each other (e.g. through dance, clothing, tools, etc)

  • The Indigenous people of the South Pacific are depicted as living in harmony with the Europeans, they are depicted wearing clothes that are quite similar to European styles, and even seem to be engaging in European practices. It's definitely made through a European view and is almost romanticised by the use of bright colours and the depictions of peace and...

  • This is a great point! I definitely agree that the view of the land and the indigenous culture was romanticised

There are some great examples here that lead me to say that we all see things differently. And I believe that the way we view things is entirely based on where we sit in society. Our cultures, beliefs, upbringing, societal status, socio-economic status, and many more factors will influence how we perceive things. So essentially no two people will ever see...

I chose the trailer for 'Uncut Gems' as it was a film I had recently watched and wanted to reflect on whether the trailer was an accurate representation of the film.

An example I want to share is about the film's visuals. I wrote: 'The visuals for the trailer of Uncut Gems cut between bright colours and flashing lights to a...

Gender stereotypes are a huge thing in the media! One I've started to notice is advertisements for household cleaning, laundry, and baby products. These advertisements tend to frequently feature women and are targeted towards a female audience.

I've included a link to a youtube video that shows a few cleaning advertisements (although based in America) and...

I'm excited to see how representation is influenced by the creator's own views and personal opinions.

  • Our greetings are learnt whilst growing up. We see them being used by our family, friends, and what is taught to us in schools. So I believe we naturally adapt to these methods. However, I find it interesting how these greetings can change and adapt over generations. For example, my grandmother always told us it was polite to smile, shake hands and maybe even...

  • I think the greeting can heavily depend on what kind of environment and setting you're in and how well you know someone

  • Hi everyone, I am from Newcastle, Australia and I am studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Film, Media and Cultural studies and minoring in Sociology and Anthropology

As Noah pointed out below, smartphones are easy to carry around can fit in your pocket. So they essentially allow us to access anything we want, wherever we want and whenever we want.

  • I don't post much on social media but I do view it and scroll on it quite a lot! Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok are my most used apps (shout out to the screentime setting for reminding me how much time I've spent scrolling). It amazes me how time can seem to pass so quickly when scrolling on social media, a couple of minutes seems to turn into a couple of hours...

I've found that my screen time has sky-rocketed since last year's lockdowns and I find myself spending most of my day on some form of technology, which definitely isn't healthy! But it makes me think about how much of my usage is actually essential. A good chunk of my screen time is contributed to studying, accessing the news, creating creative pieces, and...

  • I second this!

  • Looking forward to learning all of these but in particular the 'enhanced awareness of the media and how it works' and the 'how to recognise some of the creative elements used to create meaning in media'

Hi everyone! My name is Ella and I'm studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Film, Media, and Cultural studies and minoring in Sociology and Anthropology. I absolutely love everything and anything to do with film, media, and culture and would definitely call myself a film fanatic (I've already watched over 50 new movies this year alone!). In my spare time, I...

  • Hi! I'm Ella and I am studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Film, Media, and Cultural studies and I love everything and anything to do with media and film. I am looking forward to exploring it on a deeper and more academic level.

  • I think that the way society is changing in terms of gender roles, the functionalist view on gender inequality definitely has it flaws. More women are joining the workforce, home duties are being shared equally and marriage is becoming less traditional.

  • Movies and TV shows tend to still portray males and females in the typical stereotypical roles and reinforce traditional gender roles, however I do believe it is changing. I've noticed movies are slowly starting to break way from these stereotypes and even challenge them in ways, however I ultimately believe that people are always going to have almost a guilty...

  • I've thought about gender roles and what it means to be female or male. I think that in terms of reproduction organs there are two genders but I don't believe you have to be boxed into one and personally don't feel like you need to identify as a specific gender either. So although your chromosomes and hormones might classify you as a particular gender, you do...

  • I am most interested in explore and discussing the topics about masculinity and femininity and looking at how society and societal 'norms' have a huge impact on those subjects.

  • There are definitely some clear gender differences in social roles which are very evident in today's society. For example, I wanted to quickly touch on Walby's fourth point about sexuality. A huge gender difference I have seen recently is about women being sexually active. There are so many 'standards' women have to deal with when being sexually active. If...

  • Growing up in a small coastal town that was considered a low-socioeconomic area, the norms were quite different to what they are now in the same area. In the past five years alone, this town has adapted and changed the social 'norms' for the better. For example, drug and alcohol abuse were quite common in my area and was almost seen as the 'norm' for the area....

  • I definitely behave differently in different social settings but i think it ultimately comes down to how I want to be perceived and whether or not I am comfortable in that setting. At home and around friends I feel more relaxed, casual and behave in a different way than when I'm at work or even university. I also believe society plays a huge part in how we...

  • I do agree with Durkheim's analysis, however I also believe that parts of those five factors are beginning to change. For example, factor four about atheism I believe can be perceived differently. Although religion can create a sense of community, I believe that feeling that sense of community can be found in many other ways. Whether it's by belonging to a...

Theories help us challenge the way we already see the world and give us the opportunities to educate ourselves and gain a better understanding as to why people participate in society differently

  • Sociological theory is important because it os around every single day and has a profound impact on how see perceive situations and even people. It influences our thoughts and actions so it is important to understand these theories and to be able to take a step back and understand things on a different level

  • A social construct I find really interesting and tend to reflect on regularly are gender roles. More specifically, female gender roles. Growing up I was heavily influenced about traditional gender roles where the female is to finish her education, get married, have children and care for the household, whereas the male traditionally works to support the family....

  • Growing up, the area I lived in was classed as a lower socio-economic area which in turn had some disadvantages and the locals were often seen as 'low-class'. But in the last few years with the help of social media, the town is becoming a popular tourist spot and it is now an advantage to live in the area.

Structural, cultural and historical factors all have a critical role in how we perceive food. What might be considered the 'norm' in one culture can have an extremely different meaning in another culture. Norms have the ability to shape our society and even conform our views on certain food products.

  • I definitely behave differently in different social settings and I think it comes down to how we want to be perceived or how comfortable we are in the situation.

Sociology is a science because it takes into account many different views, ideas, opinions and societal impacts and turns them into actual factual data. This allows sociology to then be seen as science because it contains theories, research and accurate observations. This differs from everyday observations because it is taking into account more than one...

  • I believe this cartoon represents that the group of people are still conforming to an idea of society and believing it is how you are meant to be. By the way they are all grouped and are stating to 'be yourself' but saying the other person is a non-conformist is quite hypocritical. I think to truly 'be yourself' is to be able to live by your own standards and...

Personally when reacting to an idea I've never heard before I tend to resist it, however I am definitely working on being more open minded and listening to both sides of the argument before taking things into consideration. When I was younger I tended to form views based off the media and my parents but as I have gotten older I find that I am more freely able...

  • I have witnesses first hand the difference in power relations regarding education. A particular experience that comes to mind is the inequality in the schooling system. Students who come from a lower socio-economic background may have larger personal responsibilities and troubles which in turn can lead to a poorer performance in school thus leading them to...

Hi, my name is Ella and I'm from Lake Macquarie in NSW. I chose sociology because I find it extremely interesting and look forward to learning about the broad range of topics that are being explored in this course. I think sociology is about human behaviours and how a wide variety of factors and experiences in society can shape these behaviours.
