  • I searched the term "bloody" on BNC and BNC64. For the BNC search, males had a frequency of 241.761 vs the 450.101 for female speakers. Whereas in the BN64, there is a higher normalized frequency for male speakers (8.74) vs female speakers (7.35).   • This tool is very interesting. Have you updated the corpus since_?

  • It may because women have traditionally been the models for language change and the ones taught to speak "well", and bad language and swearing words have been "banned" or taboo for them. With the passing of time and the changes in human behavior this shifted.

  • Corpora is becoming more of a key resource for language teaching in providing students and teachers with context, examples and patterns.

  • I have very little experience in using corpora in language learning. I have used a small corpus to extract examples to teach email writing, which is a great resource into providing naturalness in language learning.

  • I think lexical bundles account for the naturalness of language; they help learners identify how to sound or write native like.

  • Brown Family corpus has 99,183 *ly ending terms. When restricting to only adverbs, the result changes to 12,183

  • Sociolinguistics is such a vast field that can interact with so many others. What I like the most is collaboration and the reuse of the information, and this is sense Corpus Linguistics is an essential element.

  • Given the influence that social and mass media have on speaker and the fact that they are the ones who have historically transmitted the standard variants, it it common to see a higher frequency in the use of "isn't".
    155.974 instances vs 31.552 instances in the British National Corpus.

  • Everything runs smoothly. My only suggestion is to add a "start query" at the bottom of the restricted query so that users don't have to scroll back up.

  • When looking for primary or basic colours such as red, blue pink, I found that they were more frequent among men (157.968:132.207, 126.926:87.423, 45.068:40.864). However more complex colours (in their composition as well as their spelling) like magenta and turquoise, frequency favored women. There was no result for "turquoise-men".

    I believe essay 3 provided a more comprehensive answer focusing on cultural differences and from the beginning the student made it clear the they would focus on one aspect of the data set. In my opinion this is the most organized and clear of the three.

  • Building my mini corpus with newspaper articles was a good challenge to have a sample for my upcoming learners corpus. I started to explore language learning which is one of my main interest, and was surprised with the depth of the automatic report produced by #LancsBox.

  • I anonymized all sensible information and uploaded the material to #LancsBox. The corpus has 63 files, 15267 tokens, 2698 types and 2421 lemmas.

  • Got them right!!!! Took me a long time, but I understood what was doing wrong. The tips and explanations are really helpful.

    If one is focusing on infrequent words or phrases, would those still be "keywords"?

  • I have always encouraged students to use collocation dictionaries and taught them to retrieve new collocations from articles, magazines, etc. I believe the use of corpora for retrieving collocation would be more useful for students and professionals in general.

  • Great conversation with Professor Semino, I would like to be in all of her classes and projects.
    It continues to amaze me how board the field of Corpus Linguistics is and the many applications from the most tangible thing like creation class books to improving the recovering of cancer patients.

    Hello! I'm Laura, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm a Sworn Translator and a Hispanic Linguist. I got interested in Corpus Linguistics as a way of implementing corpora in the classroom to improve learner's skills. As well as Shazia, I also want to focus on second language pedagogies and intercultural communication.
