  • I like the Sun in the Door most.

  • so much depends
    upon a red wheel barrow
    glazed with rain water
    beside the white chickens

  • Same here. I go for meaning rather than structure.

  • The Motorists Association map
    records no flower-decked memorials
    to those who slipped across
into the galaxy that’s parallel to ours –
    that shifting multiverse of memory

I break the line this way for easy reading.

  • I upvoted "How Do I Love Thee" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Such a lovely poem.

  • I have come to memorise a poem when I was in Secondary School. It's a poem called "I Shall Not Pass This Way Again".

  • I used to go to an open mic poetry event and I like how diverse poetry can be. I like those poems that tell a story in a simple, artistic and powerful way.

  • It's my dream to publish my poems one day and be known as a "poet". I look forward to learning and honing my skill through this course.

  • Looking forward to learning more about Social Media for my blog and future business purposes.

  • I like Shelter the most. The message, the tone and even the images are very compelling and very informative. It makes you want to be part of their cause. And it's really powerful, it connects and very moving.

  • Discuss the reasons why parents have the greatest impact on their child's development.

  • Essay title: Discuss the reasons why parents have the greatest impact on their child's development.

    Ideas:
    - Parents are the child's first carer and teacher
    - Children spend most of their time with their parents in their early age
    - Parents are the most influential person in a child's life
    - Children are good imitators of their parents

  • I'm changing my essay title from "Discuss the reasons why a happy childhood makes a healthy adult" to "DISCUSS THE REASONS WHY PARENTS HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT ON THEIR CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT."

The hidden question in my essay title is: why do parents have the greatest impact on their child's development?

  • I got it right. I answered 8-12 hrs. This is because everything is online. It could work-wise related or entertainment or social media. And most younger people spend most of their time logged in online.

  • I'm Mary Ann, I have a blog and I think this course is great for me to know more about content creation.

  • The majority of students at the University of Reading International Social Club come from China.
Almost all Chinese students are studying Business.
Nearly everyone from S.Korea is studying Sciences.
Most students from Russia are studying Sciences.
    Many students are studying Business.
Some of the Arts ad Humanities students come from Brazil.

  • There is a beautiful waterfall in my hometown where people visit especially during summertime.

  • As always, I enjoyed doing the exercise.

  • I agree! "Grammatical accuracy is important in good academic writing."

  • @ThuAnhPham I think a happy childhood boosts a child's emotional well-being and social skills.

  • I enjoyed the exercises of identifying and arranging the essay sections. I didn't only learn but also had fun!

  • Discuss the reasons why childhood experiences impact adulthood.

  • Yes, academic writing is objective and impersonal.

  • Discuss the reasons why a happy childhood makes a healthy adult.

  • I did it right!

  • Coherence is everything! Either in life or in writing.

  • I made a mistake in the introduction part. Part of it maybe is I didn't read the essay properly. Overall, it was good and I enjoyed doing it! :)

  • Title: Discuss the reasons why people choose to live in Reading

Introduction (background): Reading is a large town in south-east England with a population of 147,300. It is about halfway between London and Oxford.
Introduction (thesis statement): Some people were born in Reading…to improve the quality of their family life and to study.

    Paragraph 1...

  • This is very clear and very helpful.

  • A very well written and organised essay! It's easy to read and understand.

  • Mind mapping helps a lot in organising ideas.

  • This has been a great learning week. Looking forward to learning more.

  • Children born in the '80s and '90s had a happier childhood than those who are post-millennial. The older generations had enjoyed more their childhood by spending more time playing together with their friends. They have each other to entertain themselves. Unlike now, children have their gadgets to play with which is not as much fun as playing with others that...

  • 1. LIFE AFTER WW II: Lack of food
    2. CHINA’S INDUSTRIALISATION: Job creation and city life
    3. IMPROVEMENT IN EDUCATION: English language has been introduced
    4. NEW CUSTOM (WESTERNASITION): Wearing western clothes
    5. - NEGATIVE CHANGES: Increased of cigarettes smokers and children not so hardworking

  • The improvement shows how he wrote objectively compare to his first attempt where he wrote subjectively. And he has improved a lot in regards to content, organisation and language.

  • What an improvement! There's more content this time and organisation is evident. He has organised and structured his essay well. And the language has improved dramatically. He has used connectors and grammar errors from his fist attempt has been corrected.

  • The strength of Xiao's essay is that he had ideas. However, as the weakness is the language he had difficulty connecting them and he made grammatical errors. But overall, it was a good attempt.

  • I find it difficult when writing an academic essay not to personalise because I tend to personalise myself. But it's good to remember that in academic writing it should not personalised.

  • Xiao included the economic development of his country by mentioning how people 'work hard on the land' to the government building programme that improve people's lives as they work and live in the cities.

  • In my home country, I could say the following:

    Nowadays:
    - Houses are mostly concrete and modern
    - Children used to play together outside
    - Most people have cars or motorcycle
    - Use of internet and social media
    - Agriculture as the main source of income

    Past:
    - Houses are mostly made of nipa hut
    - Children are busy with their gadgets
    - Few people...

  • For this essay, I would discuss the difference between my childhood then and childhood now.

In the past, I remember how children my age used to play together outside, either on the street where older people watched us, in the neighbourhood or inside my house or someone else's. We used papers, grass, clay from the ground and whatever we see available...

  • This is a great start! It's good and helpful to know that academic writing is categorised into three main areas: CONTENT, ORGANISATION AND LANGUAGE.

  • My experiences in writing in English so far has been confined on a personal level such as writing in my journal, writing poems or writing in my blog.

I think academic writing is more formal kind of writing that uses some words that seem more academic or technical. And it's just recently that I had to write academic writing, an essay for a course I did....

  • @OwinyHakim agree. Same here. It's for me to learn more in order to be better at what I'm doing. In other words, so that I can serve better through my writing.

  • I'm taking this course because of professional interest. I want to learn and grow more as I have a passion for writing. I have a blog, I write poems and I'm also doing some academic essay writing. I hope this course will enhance my knowledge and help me develop more writing skills.

  • I'm Mary Ann. I blog and I would like to learn more about copyright and the creative industry as I want to explore and grow more in this area. As an aspiring author and poet, I think this course is related to what I am doing and future aspirations.

  • I'm happy to join the course as I want to know more about copyright and the creative industry. I started a blog nearly a year ago and I am an aspiring author, counsellor and a poet.

  • I joined this course to gain more knowledge about the GDPR for my blog.

  • Hi! I'm Mary Ann. I had degree in Business Studies and I join this course because I want to learn and improve my communication skills as I want to build a business from my blog in the future.

  • I like the poem and the rhyming.

  • This course is not only very informative but very enriching. There are so many things to learn and I'm thankful for what this course is offering.

  • I enjoyed the reading and the sound of the poem.

  • I will continue to post my poems in my blog https://lifequotesandpoem.com/
and also try to attend open mic event that I used to go to before.

  • I find the feedback helpful. I will definitely review my poem and try to improve it.
Thank you Dorothee Komangapik and Yury eresa Forero Jimenez for your feedback.

  • This is one simple definition of poetry from my Google search. "Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic writing, that attempts to stir a reader's imagination or emotions."

My own personal definition is this: Poetry is a way of expressing one's thoughts and emotions.

  • I like the definition of poet as "maker" because in essence that's who we are. For we are created in the image of God. This inspire me even more to create poems that inspire and bright light to this world. Poems that reflects God. You can check my blog https://lifequotesandpoem.com/ for some of my poems

  • How I wish I can give feedback as Vivienne Clark did to me in this course. Her feedback was so great! Thank you again Vivienne.

  • Indeed! I will too :)

  • Same here Devika :) I've learned a lot and I would like to try and apply those learning...

  • That's what I want to do too Judith. But I haven't finished the entire course yet. Still have the week 3 to go through. I would love to read the poem you'll come up with. :)

  • Life is written in its pages -
the good, the bad and the ugly,
    pain, tears and heartache,
    joy, love and happiness
    but most of all, thankfulness.

I wasn't able to finish it but came up with a new different poem instead which I will be posting in my blog https://lifequotesandpoem.com/

  • What an amazing shaped poem. Not a random one but done so with such meaning and purpose. George Herbert is becoming my favorite poet.

  • A Journal
    Journaling
    Written Memories

  • I started drafting a poem but after this I ended up changing the poem altogether. Haven't finished the poem though.

  • Same here, I found the second one easier to read and understand than the prose

  • Pen of Hope

You hold a pen on your hand
    A tool quite grand
    Use it for hope
To benefit those within your scope

  • A wide ocean is a view to behold
But what you can't see from afar
    You can with binoculars

  • I want to say my appreciate for your wonderful review on my poem Vivienne. You grasped the message I'm trying to convey. Thank you very much. That was such a positive review.

  • Same with Helen and Michael, I used notebook and a pen. But nowadays, I'm more on writing in a notes app on my phone or emailing to myself.

Sometimes, I just write thoughts that come to mind and then get back and work on them later.

  • I want to thank you Olivia for your positive review. It was so kind of you.

  • It was such an experience. I've learned a lot so far. I'm very thankful for this course.

  • This is really good and I did enjoy doing this exercise.
I came up with two cento:

If a kindness I may show
I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah my dear

Love took my hand, and smiling did reply
I shall not pass this way again

Lines are from "I Shall Not Pass This Way Again" and "Love(III) by George Herbert.

  • This poem "Love (III) by George Herbert captivated my heart.
"Love took my hand, and smiling did reply / who made the eyes but I?"

  • I have my own website where I post my poems, old and new. Would appreciate a visit as well as feedback. Thank you.

  • My earliest memory of poetry was in secondary school where I heard about a poem titled "I Shall Not Pass This Way Again" which became my favourite. I tried to write poem by then but to no avail. But at the age of 22, I made my first poem in (Filipino or Tagalog), my mother tongue, followed by a spoken words poem in English after 4 years. And 2 years later when...

  • I like the definition of poet being a "maker" for in part that's who we are.

  • Oh I like the word Hallelujah too. It does mean shout of joy, praise or gratitude.

  • Kindness - this is what the world needs. A small act of kindness can have a huge impact.

  • My favourite poem is " I Shall Not Pass This Way Again"

  • It's so true that the poems we make speaks about us who make them. It carries something about who we are as prof Michael said.
I also agree when Martin said about letting the circumstances and the unique aspects of our life inform our writing...because basically I write poem by experience and also my way of self-expression. I'm very happy about this course...

  • I think 'speaking well' means ability to communicate one's thoughts or ideas accurately and with clarity.

  • As some have mentioned here, reading is a good way of improving writing skill.

  • Children are vulnerable nowadays due to the culture we're living in where immorality is rampant specially in the social media. The advancement of technology is good but how it's being use is the problem. Also because of the busyness of life, parents have very less time to spend with their children and teach or train them themselves in the right way.

  • Hello my name is Mary Ann and I love children. I used to handle toddlers in our church. I signed up to this course because I want to learn how to help vulnerable children.
