Activity

  • It would be great if an opportunity is given to analyze quantitative data using software such as SPSS but in a step by step process. Something I wanted to get myself acquainted in preparation for a PhD research in the future. This course, however, has elevated my understanding and improve my research skills.

A priviledge I can not let it go without my 'thank you.'

  • Thank you so much. Truly appreciate for a wealth of knowledge and information for my research work in the future.

  • Appreciate knowing the difference between policy briefs, reports and peer publications. Great deal of things have been learned through out week 10.

  • Part of my research question is intended to have a report prepared for the top religious leaders in the region and can be useful to other institutions of government and NGOs on conflict resolution and management.
On the flip side it will be part of my peer-reviewed publications in consideration for future research work.

Well appreciated for week 9 learning

  • Challenges or issues related to societal and cultural context are major threats to the success of the research. And learning through others' experiences tells us that we got to prepare well in advance before commencing the study. Preparation is a key aspect of anything you want to do and in research I am fortunate to learn that it is.

  • This is a report of how insensitive a supervisor was to a colleague worker. The student endured and it was an opportunity of lessons learnt for future researches though the student was affected. Today, if I am the student I should view the incident through a lens of opportunity than being unsure.

  • Racial issues are challenges at the time of the research especially when foreigners are involved. Few decades ago I accompanied a white male as a research assistant. He was contracted to doing a socioeconomic impact assessment in mining project area as part of his PhD and I had the opportunity to do much of the interviews with the local landowners. I could...

  • Mine is about interviewing participants within a religious community and really do not expect major issues but lack of providing prior information on the nature of the research project would have the potential to bring into disrepute some of the existing organizational values/beliefs and principles. Such would affect the research.

  • Useful information.

  • Important advice. Appreciate them.

  • Protecting oneself is important. Giving away will affect the very essence of the whole research project.

  • Coding is the real deal. I got to familiarise myself with the data do the coding accurately. Unless I get this thing done properly I may mix up everything when analysing the data. I will have revisit my notes again.

  • Mine is qualitative data analysis a method that I believe will work in my research topic "How leaders can manage conflict amongst members in a local church: Strategies, opportunities and challenges of conflict resolution over values, interests and beliefs amongst members."
I will be using a questionnaire to collect the data where questions will be developed...

  • Much appreciated

  • Appreciate

  • I agree with colleague learners here of being patient and passionate about the subject. We just got to thoroughly go through the reading getting acquainted with it before analysing the data accurately.

  • The codebook example provides as an excellent guide to present a good report or write up. So consistency is an important aspect of coding.

  • Thematic analysis gives much flexibility to dealing with the data. Coding data well at first place will set stage for researcher to do a good analysis and write up.

  • Appreciate, that even if this course won't teach us statistics which is a critical component of research particularly quantitative, we'll still be given I guess pertinent references that are helpful.

  • Appreciate the references

  • It maybe easier to come up with a research topic but applying the right methods is a little more challenging or even if it's a mix method. I hope that by the end of this course I will have not only a fare understanding to choose a topic and apply the right methods but will have refined my current topic with them right method(s) to pursue.

Appreciate the different research methods we've learnt so far. Each though has it's own strength and weakness.

  • "How to manage conflicts in the Adventist church: Strategies, opportunities and challenges of conflict resolution over values, interests and beliefs".
The survey and qualitative methods would suit my research question. With survey it's easy, cheap and responses are high though difficult to develop rapport with no visual aids. For qualitative, its flexible...

  • The graph makes it much easier to understand the research methods

  • Using openly available data is important for comparative analysis and contextualizing your research question can make the report more credible given the sources are also trusthworthy. However, openly available data are more general in context and may lack specific examples to back up my own findings.

  • Informative and helpful

  • The questions are open-ended and will be asked through face to face interview with consent. The research method applied is qualitative in nature.
    1. Can you explain briefly how your local church group resolves conflicts?
    - The Minister of the church brings affected parties together in the church and prayerfully mediates.
    2. Can you provide some of the...

  • Appreciate the tips. They're helpful.

  • Appreciate the tips. They're helpful.

  • Survey method maybe synonymous with issues and policies affecting the people at large

  • No. The research question I develop in week 4 is one that suit the qualitative method.

  • Vital things I am learning so far, things that maybe helpful for future studies

Photovoice (or videovoice) method is a powerful tool used through social media these days by people to bring development agendas to the attention of government and policy makers in a matter of minutes. This is a practical method in the least developed or developing countries in addressing development challenges.

  • I have sighted a few qualitative and/or quantitative research reports and recall the complimentary works done with application of photovoice and community mapping methods. The most striking flashback was my own involvement as a research assistant, years ago, to a PhD student carrying out a socio-economic impact study with the indigenous landowners in a mining...

Technology these days is seen as an enabler in community research

  • In one way or another, participant observation, photovoice and community mapping would still fit into my research question. Mine is related to conflict resolution and management in a social gathering where I am already a member of the community and have deep relations. My accessibility and interactions with the community is like twice on a weekly basis....

  • Community mapping could be one of the useful tools in achieving sustainable development goals.

  • I took a couple of pictures at a tertiary medical student association launching recently in a university. I took some photos of which their theme reads: "Learning to serve humanity". I recall the recent readings I've done on sustainable development goals especially to do with the different actors in implementing the SDGs.
Well, it was a privilege to take the...

  • Photos tell a thousand stories. Something we should keep in mind when analysing.

  • Vital lessons. Much appreciated.

  • Unable to access photovoice

  • Participant observation maybe useful in getting a difficult research question resolved especially those that involve people's behaivor.

  • Challenges may add value to the whole study. Challenges faced may present some opportunities and values that may otherwise would never have had by the research participant observant if everything else went as expected.

  • Appreciate this.

  • Can symbols be used when taking field notes?

  • Practically it's a challenge for a researcher as a participant observer to participate in the activities when research question is related to difficult issues such as prostitution.
And ethically, its a challenge when the researcher as a participant observer may cause his/her family's reputation into disrepute by certain conducts. I may also add that...

  • key answered questions are just helpful

  • There could also be a high possibility that participant observers would unconsciously be influenced by the detailed knowledge and deeper connection developed with the host community. We now know that during the time of participant observation inductive and iterative approaches when applied the same may cause initial research question to be altered. This tells...

  • I consider having a relationship with the participant is vital with the other elements but I just have to be careful not to have any influence in anyway over it. Focus group interview is one great way to collect views from multiple focus groups regarding a public policy issue.

  • Norit Luio made a comment

    All good so far

  • Informative for a research question that would employ mix method - both qualitative and quantitative methods. Interesting to know that the quantitative analysis of the survey data had been used in conducting qualitative interviews. I think the above was applied based on the nature of the research question.

  • "How do senior care home residents interact with others in care homes, and how is this related to feelings of loneliness?"
For this research question, there maybe two main focus groups to be interviewed. The first group should be the care home residents whilst the second focus group should be the staff of the care home centers.

  • The research question that I came up with in week 4 does not suit the use of a focus group. The research question "How church leaders can manage conflicts in a local church ministry: Strategies, opportunities and challenges of conflict resolution over values, interests and beliefs amongst members" would employ a qualitative research method. Therefore I will be...

  • The group interview as an example provided above is helpful

  • Tips are helpful

  • I would prefer to be interviewed by a researcher on a social related public policy, which I would be at ease to participate. Giving personal details is something I would hesitate a little. Sharing experiences about a research question related to social public policy will be a comforting experience for me.

  • Body movements play key roles in enabling a good interview

  • The below is the research question I had chosen in week 4.
"How leaders can manage conflict amongst members in a local church ministry: Strategies, opportunities and challenges of conflict resolution over values, interests and beliefs amongst members."
My main questions would be the following.
    1. Can you briefly describe the nature of what your ministry...

  • I now understand ethics is an important component of any research project. In the consent letter the researcher should give full assurance with clarity and verbally to the participant even after getting their approval that the data or information collected will be locked away in a very safe place. For example, data collected will be kept in a laptop that has...

  • Phone interview is costly and unsafe to end the interview on a good note as network is unstable whilst online interview may experience a lot of voice breakdown in the process of conversation. In both cases it would be appropriate to do in advance preparations testing the systems and ensuring the conversation would be done at a certain time that both...

  • Amongst others, the table summarizing different kinds of questions is helpful.
    Appreciate that.

  • It all depends on the other factors coming into play but if an opportunity arises for me to interview the participant face-to-face the body language expressed by the participant would be important to take note of for itself will tell more stories, for example in a trauma experience by women and girls in a war torn area.

  • It maybe one thing to formulate the right questions surrounding the research question and another thing to actually communicate the questions in the interview. Expressing the questions in the event that the participant may need a translator It maybe possible that needed information or data maybe omitted or irrelevant ones would be gathered. This itself maybe a...

  • Week 4 provided an opportunity for me to choose my research topic and I have chosen one a subject matter I am currently involved in with members of the community I belong. I have done minor readings on conflict resolution and management and my current engagement as one of the leaders of a local church of a Christian denomination to mediate over a conflict...

  • My research question will employ the qualitative research method because the study will research into people's life. A semi-structured questionnaire will be used to collect data especially people's views and opinions about a social issue affecting lives of people and how it can be managed or addressed. Hence the qualitative method is applicable for this study.

  • Research outcomes to some degree may influence public policy and many maybe attracted particularly those who prefer to help addressing issues affecting people's lives or those that are aimed at improving public service delivery.

  • General: Conflcit management and resolution in a chrtistian environment
Specific: Leadership in conflict management in a christian organization with deeply held values and beliefs

  • Community based participatory research is something I wanted to do many years. The Tuskegee study gives a stern warning for future research work

  • It's hard to trust people these days. Who can trust who? Our communities are rocked with political instability and economic uncertainties. Terror and violence, war and crime, manmade crises and natural disasters are sweeping through them. Indifferences amongst communities combined with the above are ethical challenges. In such challenging conditions CBPR is...

  • Without ethics communities would be hurt big time because they're governed by certain rules, values and beliefs. Ethics ought to take into consideration these values for without them there would be no such thing as a community. Thus ethics in research is key.

  • In countries where democracy and freedom of information is limited and where researches are government sanctioned there's high chances of less or zero tolerance of consent seeking.

  • The Tuskegee study is a worse case scenario of absolute abuse, violence and distrust of power dynamics, inclusivity, equity, race and diversity. One of the main contributing factors would have been the socioeconomic conditions of the black community falling prey to those coordinating the research project.

  • What a tragic story this is. I am thinking how the black community reacts to power dynamics at the time of COVID 19 especially with authorities dominated by white.

  • CRT and intergenerational trauma are new and challenging concepts to me. Working on socioeconomic assessment on a post conflict area is an opportunity to explore on the responses given by women and children, elderly and disable group especially on intergenerational trauma.

  • Norit Luio made a comment

New concepts I have learnt in week 2. Such as unconscious bias, CRT, intergenerational trauma etc..

  • Its tough for someone who has no clue; about holocaust, ethnic violence, government oppression, survivors or war victims or prisoners, rape victims to go and counsel them about doing good to others. Therefore sensivity plays key role in these difficult situations.

  • Ethnic bias in a diverse cultural setting is one that I really hate to see and experience

  • I think the barriers in participative or collaborative research are values that should add value to the whole research project. The barriers make the project interesting for without the barriers the project is just another research project. The barriers surfaced are opportunities created for future research work if not they're something for the supervisors to...

  • - Religious group
    - Ethnicity
    - Profession
    - Gender

  • According to religious beliefs race is a fruit of demonic work or evil presence in society. Therefore CRT's view of race being socially construed and not biological may not be an isolated view. Race maybe evolved from powers beyond human comprehension.

  • The notion of race according to CRT is socially construed and not biological is not an isolated view. According to religious beliefs race is a fruit of demonic work or evil presence in society.

  • Power dynamics are inevitable in any human society. Power dynamics are at play because of self. People struggle and race for self recognition and benefit. I think its natural for human and all animals.

  • Most of societies' developmental challenges are inevitably consequential from power dynamics. This presents researchers great opportunities at the public space to provide policy advices and suggestions that are evidence based.

  • What I have learnt so far prepares me for new roles/promotion or new job and future research work especially Masters in Global Development

  • Community I belong is where we share the same belief, values and interests irregardless of race, ethnicity or nationality

  • Help address policy and developmental issues and challenges in the society, those that affects the people. Peer or community reseacher would help especially when working with government departments

  • University - Community partnership in research maybe helpful in pursuing sustainable development goals (SDGs)

  • I live in a city where it is culturally diverse. Though I come a certain ethnic group I feel much more belonging to my church community.
