I want to be a better friend

  • I'll know after I check my understanding.

  • I've begun my list of a working vocabulary. What you've said thus far makes sense.

  • anxious. I want to do well and be able to follow a discussion when I listen to family and friends. I'ld like to be able to have sufficient knowledge and experience so that I have confidence about taking the next course in the series.

  • I'm Wanda. I'm taking this course to increase my understanding.

  • I agree to the Code of conduct.

  • I get it! Now to get quick by shifting out of ASL.

  • Good Luck!

  • The quiz is a good one!

  • ACCESS to an ordinary life - that's what I'm talking about.

  • Self-preservation is a good starting point. Ensuring one has shelter, food and water is necessary before focusing on health, wealth and happiness. Many citizens of disability can not claim these at a significant level of independence. Instead, they're dependent on the goodwill of the government, family, and community. I think Maslow, while dated, is a very...

  • Equal opportunities does not level the playing field. That's like saying, okay you can come IF you can do the work. Access is the word, ensuring accessibility and providing the gains necessary to even out the game. We want access so that we are on equal footing for the opportunities. We want to own our own homes, be able to buy new clothing instead of...

  • I see myself as a woman who is defining her own best life.

  • I have a very real problem with the word "normal". People bandy the word around as if it were a honor, a privelege to bestow. Notice who is using the word. The Normals.

I always assumed I was one of you until you used that word in reference to me.

  • the "uncaptioned" video was inaccessible for this one deaf woman..., not very inclusive, eh?

  • I think one of the biggest mistakes society makes is the failure to acknowledge differences and advantages. So many are determined to say that we are all the same. They insist they don't see the color of the skin or that they "forgot" the difference. I too, had parents like Antoni; determined to insure that I become more like the society they participated in....

  • Inclusion is decided by others, generally holding power and the decision is and tends to be subjective. These others can range from family, neighborhood children, educators, community services, governmental authorities, elected officials, etc

Belonging is through connection made due to feelings within a being.

  • I hope we're not making the mistake of thinking there are right and wrong answers for CQ and cohesiveness. A leader has the ability to lead based on the readings taken of the populace. Mr. Trump is able to "cultivate and lead". He has the ability to select, take a reading and decide how to persuade and proceed. He saw an audience who felt their desires and...

  • Maybe we need to be viewing from a perspective of equal access and legal compliance in the face of discrimatory action. You can either allow me to define what is effective inclusion or attempt to smother by passive justification and get hit with a lawsuit. I guarantee inclusion of my input will be far more cost-effective.

  • Your area sounds beautiful! My house is surrounded by fields, farms and ponds. Let us both treasure the richness of our enviroments. Best Wishes! Yours in Future Learn, Wanda

  • Minimum of 10,000 steps daily. weights every day, alternating upper and lower body. Core daily. By doing these, I am able to house and yard work. I see a massage therapist monthly to address aches, pains, areas which tend to cramp and trigger points. Gym membership and massage are not inexpensive and then again, cheaper than not doing.

  • HI Sheila Grant - did you have an opportunity to walk or get sometime outside?

  • We're all a different crowd. Pleased to meet each of you.

I'll return after trying out the circle game on others. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  • medium, large medium time is a continuum. what happened in the past influenced the present moment of time combined with what is occuring here and now affected by those present and what is occuring within the sphere locally/globally which in turn creates projections into the future which will consist of measurable, workable intents with room to expand the...

  • :) ok.

  • I'm open.

  • What gets in the way of a leader? Solo Figurine = Going it alone because eventually the followers drop out and everything else does too, or tends to happen.

  • Northeastern USA. Hard driving, fast-forward, upwardly mobile, highly compensated, divine powers, photogentic, quotable, entertaining, autonomy

My idea of a leader. Awarenes of time, dynamic, open to others, cordial, inclusive, listens to others' perspective, equal access, high tech/high touch, globally present and awareness, compassion, ultimately...

  • In growing up deaf, any genuine connection has been initially made based on a hearing person's lip-readability or the use of sign language by a deaf or a hearing person. Deafness does not discriminate across groups or have geographical boundaries and because of this, I believe my life has been enriched more than if I could only speak one language or interacted...

  • Isaac Baluch's narration touched my heart. "We are a family and we have built our own culture". He stood firm against bias which claimed his family's existence was wrong. Smart, too. Mr. Baluch anticipated challenges and ensure a good lawyer had his back.

  • Inclusion - my favorite word!

  • Pope Francis - He has been able to reach out past the ideology of the church into the hearts and imaginations of people all over the world. We have seen his sainted side, his compassion, sense of inclusiveness, received correction from him, witness his fear, realized his masculinity, appreciated his humor and respected the man. Because of this, our own hearts...

  • I live within a community which is disability-centric. We're also known as the Deaf, "deaf", "hearing-impaired", "hard-of hearing". In addition, there are parents, service providers, employers, rehabilitation counselors, governmental aid grantors and then there is the hearing world at large. Despite common interests and goals, there is minimal cohesiveness,...

  • I think I understand. My feeling is if you are serving the meal, serve what you wish. If you desire to be inclusive, do so to the level you are comfortable with, can afford, or invest finances and time.

The people I modify a menu for are those with known allergies, alcoholics and those who are unable to service themselves without adaptive ware. Everyone...

  • Most non-healthy eaters take it personal when I decline to eat their food choices. I take it personal when they refuse to eat my food when at my house. Yet, being part of a social network is important. I want to be with people I like, not a people-pleaser if it means consistently consuming unhealthy food.

Options are: Eat before arrival, arrive after...

  • I believe in making our public living enviroment accessible to everyone. I wish special interest groups such as physically disabled, blind, deaf would meet up with age focused groups and advocate together.

  • I live in the US. Our intersection/pedestrian signals are set up differently. I am finding I have time to spare since I am exercising daily AND remain mindful as to when I start to cross, while I am crossing and maintain a brisk pace until I am well out of the road.

  • Adding a pedometer gives non-judgemental feedback, just facts. Remember to be mindful when changing out of your clothes as pedometers and washing machines don't mix.

  • Like Steve Pullen, I have found daily exercise to create a sense of well-being. I have had to work up to a level of output which would finally result in endorphins. This took a full year as I had to gradually increase from 15 minutes, to 30, to 45, 60 and now 90 minutes. For me, endorphins don't kick in much before 45 minutes. Prior to that, my head and body...

  • Linda Willows - I hope you can find your way to a place where you can observe your grief and begin to heal.

  • What is your inital impression of plant-based food consumption? Do you think peoples' numbers can be lowered for cholesterol & insulin resistance based on eating this way? Can vascular disease be reversed as claimed? Can the quantity and dosage of medications be decreased? Would vitamins supplements be called for?

  • I love the reflective humor of the people taking this course. May we all age well.

  • Likely won't be if you are active, eat a healthy diet, stay connected, etc :)

  • I dislike hearing CRS diagnosis which are given out free and easily. It is upsetting when I hear someone say to their peer/sister/brother/parent/spouse that they are developing forgetfulness. When it was suggested to me, I reisisted the diagnosis and felt myself questioning and withdrawing. Next time I am going to ask myself two things - what does that person...

  • Busyness and being constantly on the go can be indicative of depression. These are used to avoid grief, sorrow, and anger. These will show up in our interactions with others despite our own denial or claim that everthing is fine. Eventually the work gets done or taken away, the friends withdraw and the body/mind runs out of gas.

  • I feel being regularly and developmentally exposed to those who do/did not cope well with depression can be credited as to why depression can run through direct-line descendants and spread through-out generations. I also believe depression becomes ingrained into DNA due to multi-generational spread & repetition in addition to being a learned behavior. Each...

  • Dopamine starved according to a later video.

  • Exercise will allow us to maintain the endurance needed for everyday tasks and extend independence. I see this when I look around at those my age and older while they attempt to do ordinary things. Some can, some can't and most are not performing as well as they did in the past. This really hit home.

  • Practice, practice, practice.

  • Adding this course was a good decision on everyone's part!

  • You nailed it! Suggesting or joking to someone that they are experiencing a decline in memory is ageist and contributes to a subconcious decision to release their responsibility to retain attentiveness. Better to encourage involvement, healthy eating, exercise, good sleep, practicing attentiveness, and learning new things.

  • I substitute the word concern for worry. It relieves my inner agitation and allows most problematic situations fall into their correct categories. There are concerns which are actionable and concerns which I genuinely have no control over. This also allows me to pick and choose which I am going to actively do something about and let others do their own work....

  • Taking time to meditate, eating plant-based, daily exercise and activity, ensuring my bills are paid in a timely manner, participating in captioned classes such as this one, being involved in inclusive communities, developing self-respect and awareness..., all these allow me to become aware of others. My ability to be supportive yet be detached has increased...
