Yes, there is so much I learn by being present and observing other clinicians in ward rounds.
With this study I believe am equipped to be more aware and take the time to talk with patients
-
Anne E. Imoru made a comment
From my experience taking particular interest in the patients name makes me to develop a curiosity that helps me focus on the patient without being judgemental or bothered about what i think about myself.
Not being self absorbed has helped me focus on being interested rather than being interesting.
I also watch my communication because I noticed that it...

Yes, it is really the simple things that matters.
This years a decided that I will exercise more and this step in the course goes a long way to reinforce my decision.
I like the idea of power nap, just a little concern I will over sleep (sleep to long).
Asking for help maybe a skill I need to develop, because I sometimes feel as if am great at...

Anne E. Imoru made a comment
Time pressure is something I face often at the pharmacy department, which is the last point of call at the clinic and the point when most patients are anxious to leave.
During patient counselling the thought of having another anxious to leave patient waiting, can be extremely distracting. In addition we have a time cycle book, I think supports the...

Anne E. Imoru made a comment
For me its nice to see my patients leave with a smile, feeling that their concerns had been heard and attended to.
However we have a time cycle note that measures the average time spent with each patient, which sometimes seem more important and can be a barrier to connecting with patients emphatically.
So glad for this audio step,I now believe that it...

I had a situation today at the clinic. A tired looking patient came to the pharmacy to get his routine anti-hypertensives, a macrolide antibacterial and a cough syrup. He said he was feeling very sick and explained the it might have contributed to the increased Blood pressure reading he got this morning. I reassured him that he will feel much better after...

Like Dr Helen Riess said I was one person that believed that what i called " a concerned response" and now know as empathy was a character trait and a gift one is either born with or not.

Anne E. Imoru made a comment
From what I learnt this week my "takeaway message'' is;
Empathy is the ability to recognise someones concerns and show them that I care.
Empathy is different from sympathy
There is emotional empathy, cognitive empathy and clinical empathy. And I can become more emphatic with practice.Empathy is active and transformational.
Emphatic...

What will be going through my mind in this situation include;
How can I reassure this person
How can I show I care
How can I show I understand
What can be making this person tearful
I might even remember how I cried in a doctors office because I didn't want my treatment postponed.I will approach the person with care, introduce myself and offer them a...

Its amazing how these doctors where able to provide reassurance and support for patients and their relatives, it seems so satisfying.
I believe paying attention and focusing on the other person to understand their non verbal and verbal expressions is key to asking relevant questions and making relevant acknowledgements. For most of us, we will need to...

Emphatic communication improves satisfaction for all involved and am glad i came across this topic because I need more satisfaction in my practice.

Anne E. Imoru made a comment
I see emotional empathy as a sudden response that is natural and more obvious in dramatic or demonstrative personalities.
While cognitive empathy is rather a meditated or planed response that is based on ones decision to seek understanding. It is also learned and requires communication.
Both emotional and cognitive empathy show care for the other persons...

Anne E. Imoru made a comment
To me empathy means trying to understand someones concerns or discomfort and showing that you care.
When I was a patient, for the first time I experienced the huge difference between giving health care and receiving health care.
With this course I understand why the instructions from the health workers I felt connected with stimulated more action than... -
