@PurnimaPerera you are right - it is a bit of a minefield. The project is focused on the USA - but the work will be applicable in other contexts I think.

It seems to me (at least at the beginning of this course) that the line between ethical and unethical research can be thin and at times blurred (at least in the mind of the researcher). In light of that thought, I would agree that Goffman did in fact cross the line on numerous occasions. I think it would be obvious that her involvement impacted on the context...

I am rather uncomfortable with the amount of data collection that goes on in the social / retail space. Beyond that, I get asked quite often to engage in qualitative interviews based on my work - that is with complete consent and I am ok with that. I also made a very informed decision to give evidence to the South African Truth Commission in the 1990s - that...

I already plan to do the research - for work and in order to drive social action and social change. Doing it as part of a PhD offers a couple of benefits:
1. It should make the research more rigorous. Hold it to a higher standard.
2. It should make the research results more credible - as they will be published.
3. It offers me something back (the PhD)...
