  • I'm taking this course because I wanted to give my brain a workout and go back into maths for the first time since I left it behind in high school. I want to see how I find it now after different parts of my mind have opened up over the years. Maybe it's a good time now to get into maths

  • Hi, I'm Leanne. Looking forward to this course. I was keen to do a bit of maths again for fun to energise my brain and keep it looked after :)

  • I wonder if our social media posts will be viewed as meaningful, sacred writings to people far in the future. Imagine if a meme becomes the equivalent of a hieroglyphic...

  • Learning and re-learning, to grow with change and be curious about difference.

  • I think it depends on each person's point of view. I'm from Scotland. Personally, I feel that a European identity can have the same (or more) emotional dimension than national identities. I remember on the day I heard the result for Brexit in 2016, I felt a real sadness. Yet, on the day I heard the result for the Scottish referendum, I felt relieved. I just...

  • The arts bring people together.

  • I'm from Scotland. I remember when I was a child, I was very fond of a jigsaw puzzle of a map of Europe. In each country, there were cartoon images of landmarks, people, food, sports, music, animals and landscapes. Each country had distinct features and histories. Even though some of these images possibly portrayed stereotypes, I enjoyed seeing that there were...

Hello, I'm Leanne and I'm from Scotland. Looking forward to learning more about cultures and identities in Europe.

  • Hi, I’m Leanne and I’m a freelance musician from Aberdeenshire, UK. I’m passionate about the field of music and the wider context of the arts. The reason I have joined this course is to learn more about the wider context of the field I’m in and to gain knowledge which I can use in future. I’d like to be more involved in leadership in arts and culture at later...

  • @CarolL no problem, wishing you the best with everything :)

  • @RenateWendel ahh ok that sounds great. Yes would love to see

  • @RenateWendel That's amazing wow, how was the course? That's really cool. Have you got any links to your work? Would love to listen

  • Thanks so much for this course. I loved it. Super helpful. If you have any advice about working as a self-employed musician, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

This is really nurturing, I like it

  • @PaulHidalgo no problem :)

  • @CarolL you’re so welcome. Glad to hear you got something from it! It’s a beautiful song - https://youtu.be/u4m71L2oAT4 :)

  • Hi Renate, thank you so much. Ah that’s fantastic! Wow what an opportunity. It must have been interesting. Yes, I’ve learned a lot about myself professionally and personally and now I know what I will do differently. Thank you, I will do :) where did you go to college?

  • I think this would help me to clear my head after learning!! To confirm I’m clear with what I’ve learned. And I also think it would help so much to remind me of my goals and to help focus, especially when it gets difficult,

  • Totally agree. I think it’s so important to become friends with feelings of uncertainty. In the words of John Mayer: “Fear is your friend who’s misunderstood.”

  • Uncertainty. For live performance, I don’t know when or what my next gig will be. So this is a challenge as I cannot depend on this avenue as a stable, consistent income. When the work’s there the money is great. But the work is not consistent and is not guaranteed. My approach is to firstly become familiar and comfortable with feelings of uncertainty by...

  • Or .. maybe- “I’m currently working as a Specialist in the Regulated Industry team and have a passion for leadership and management.”

  • Firstly, nice name ;) brilliant pitch, very positive and enthusiastic! I would maybe just replace the word “but” to “and” in the first line.

  • I like your positive vibes, your enthusiasm comes across clearly :) you could maybe reword the first sentence after your name to something like - “...and have both past and current experience in working on projects.”

  • Hi, I’m Leanne and I’m passionate about the power of music and human relationships. My business offers services that use music as a way of creating meaningful connections and memories between people. These include live performance for all occasions, writing and releasing original songs, community music and private tuition.

One of my biggest successes recently was applying to complete my masters in music therapy. The biggest challenge in facing this was FEAR. I had done my music therapy masters already but did not pass my final year. So I had a lot of fear and anxiety around actually applying to try again. I knew I wanted to but it took me so long to actually get to that moment...

  • I LOVE them!!!! Fantastic.

    Fulfillment, milestones

  • Great start to the course. I'm feeling optimistic for getting my career in the place I'd like it to be!! Thank you for the info. I found the part about credentials interesting as it's an area I haven't hear about as a concept so will look into this in future.

  • I think that most of the things I do now are deliberate and stem from learning from the past and self-reflecting. One major thing is to ask for support when needed rather than struggle on my own.

  • Sorry to hear that about the badly matched jobs. I have felt like that too. But there is one thing for sure- we will never stay in a similar situation again in future work :)

  • Me too!!! I feel you! It is a challenge but absolutely can be worked on and improved :)

  • Yeah, I liked the nervousness because it shows a real person. More genuine than putting on an act

  • He allowed space for people in the audience to "wooo!" or shout out. He is talking calmly, with his palms up and open body language, with a bit of movement. He is talking softly and clearly. He is listening to what people shout out and is responding to what they say, agreeing and laughing, which adds a personal and casual touch. I like that and I think it...

  • A client got in touch to book my live performance service for their wedding. This required clear written communication through a facebook message, which also needed to be a quick response. I also felt it was relevant to be enthusiastic and positive because a wedding day is an exciting event, so by carefully choosing language and tone of email I felt that it...

  • I also love this sentence: "Being able to communicate information accurately, clearly and as intended will open many doors for you to new and better opportunities."

  • I totally agree that networking online and in person are two very different things. When I'm networking in person, I like to be in an environment that excites me and that involves my passion so that I am already feeling buzzed even just being there. I like networking to involve a casual, gentle, friendly conversation with no expectations. I absolutely love it...

  • I would benefit from the transferable nature of them because I do different areas of work within music and each area can be completely different in terms of what the objectives are and where the focus is.

  • My facebook music page is my most helpful space online as most bookings come through there on private messages. I try to keep it up-to-date with a variety of content. I would like to add new videos and photos and am looking into speaking with friends who are photographers and videographers in order to create high quality material that is also affordable within...

  • 1. Musician
    2. Attended workshops run by Musicians Union
    3. I've developed professional skills more in community music work because this has involved working with people of different age groups and in different contexts. My role has been to lead, facilitate and support people which significantly developed my communication skills, listening skills, conflict...

  • Reliability. This was the first professional skilled I started with my collection when I started out as a musician. I'd say showing up was a big part of my success with events and making connections. I also noticed the importance of responding quickly to emails, being on time or even early to events. I still highly value reliability as it has opened so many...

  • It seems that there is an emphasis on skills relevant to the ability of working together with others. There are also skills that are needed in order to work on your own, but these would also be helpful when working with others as the fuller your cup is, the more you can spill over to help or inspire others. I think communication and teamwork are most in demand.

  • Love this! I'd feel comfortable and happy working at home too, with the odd day here and there going to events for learning and meeting new people :)

  • Yes, I agree! Challenge is so appealing to me too!!

  • I think it would be doable to do a combo - the balance would be great :)

  • I want to be an entrepreneur and would love the freedom to choose how I work. I feel that my strengths and passions, both personally and professionally, are suited to the conditions of entrepreneurial work and I thrive in this way of working.

Con of entrepreneurial work may include uncertainty of income but I would rather work a lot more/harder in trying to...

  • Communication (in person, through messages, online, over the phone), self-reflection, social media skills, networking, flexibility, listening skills

  • Hi, I'm Leanne and I'm a musician. The work I'm involved in includes live performance, community music tutoring, releasing music and busking. My goals in doing this course are to soak up new knowledge and find tips that I can follow up to help my career to flourish.

  • Thanks Susana :) It sure is! Aw thank you so much for the lovely words!

  • Thank you Roseann :). Yeah I thought that it was lovely to see him join in when he wanted to and when he seemed ready. That's what went through my mind from day one- there could be stress and pressure going on for this child from home, school, friends... You never know what children are going through x

  • Thanks Seamus :)

  • Love the photo of the rooster and hens! Great quote :)

  • I work in community music doing workshops with children. One child was not engaging with the group, struggled to interact with others and join in. He sat at the side of the hall, hid behind furniture and stood outside of the room by himself in the corridor. From day one, I made sure to approach him gently with a smile and asked if he wanted to join in. He...

  • Lovely to hear. The part that stood out to me was: "Being on the receiving end of an illness is a frightening experience." So important for us to hold this in mind.

  • The most important thing I have learned this week is the 7Cs. Really helpful.

I am going to hold these in mind and begin to introduce them into my practice and interpersonal learning.

I would like to find out more about different methods. I love photoelicitation and emotional touchpoints. I would be very keen to learn more of these types of methods.

  • I find supervision so helpful. Totally invaluable. I learn so much from it about the people I work with, myself and our interactions.

  • I would like to use celebrate and be courageous more. I might do this by refleting with others what worked well so that we both realize this. I'd also like to have more confidence in giving different things a try and encouraging others to do the same.

  • I think that they are fantastic processes that link our feelings to thoughts to opening up conversations. I have learned how to communicate with staff effectively and how to manage situations in the work place. I think that all of the 7Cs were apparent. I will use these tools to enhance relationships with colleagues and clients to understand and reflect together.

  • I really like this method. We sometimes find it difficult to understand our own emotions and may struggle to put them into words. It is also difficult to communicate clearly and effectively if we are feeling strong emotions. This method is fantastic because it allows us to use keywords. Keywords are so effective- short, precise and they take little thought so...

  • So simple but effective and powerful. Thank you for this.

  • Aw, I love this idea. I loved seeing everyone's photos and their messages beside them.

  • Really inspiring video :)

I think all of the Cs are touched on in my current placement experience. I think celebrate is a really important one because it can be easy to focus on what didn't go so well. There is so much to be learned from what went well. The 7Cs is a really helpful framework. I'm so glad I've been given the opportunity to know about this.

  • Lovely to hear this, Susan. That is fantastic. I love that quote you mentioned and agree that people remember how you made them feel. I never underestimate the fact that people who struggle with memory may remember you perfectly on some level of their consciousness. Maybe they won't remember your name or face. But on some level they will know who you are and...

  • *The senses are met well for me on placement with my supervisor.

*Each time I knock on the door of the office of my supervisor, I am welcomed in to sit and have a conversation right at that moment for as long as I need. I usually knock and ask if we could arrange a time later that day to do supervision but she seems happy to stop what she is doing and talk...

  • I like how this framework focuses on all people involved- staff, patients and family members. I like that it does not only have a focus on patients and forgets about staff. Or a focus on staff and forgets about patients and their families.

  • The "kind support when I needed it" really stood out to me. Got me thinking that no matter which setting we work in, we are working with people who are receiving care because they need it. Although compassion should be found in all areas of life, it should be even stronger in a healthcare context. It really is when people need it the most.

  • The most important thing I have learned this week is to understand what is important to individuals - whether it is a patient (like the woman who got to spend time with her horse) or a member of staff/student (like the student nurses who were given the learning experience about the subject of death.)

The one thing that I am going to do using techniques...

  • I have loved reading what other people do to take care of themselves. I love singing, listening to music, writing songs, spending time with family and friends, watching a film, watching youtbue videos, browsing shops, going for a jog, creative art fun and seeing live music <3

  • I love nature and creative art fun as well :)

  • I love running as well! Around the countryside listening to my ipod :)

  • Lovely to learn what these services offer. Fantastic.

  • Ocean by John Butler because it is my all-time favourite song in the whole world. Songs by Ben Howard, Lucy Rose, Rae Morris, Bombay Bicycle Club... Some of my favourites. The list goes on! This section of the course has made me very happy- seeing everyone's comments. I'm feeling proud to be a music therapy student:)

Love the sound of this approach.

  • I think that there is a difference between caring about someone and caring for someone. To me, "caring about" means to be holding that person in mind, really feeling for them, wanting to put their needs first, wanting to do what you can for them. It's the love, compassion and empathy. To me, "caring for" would mean the physical actions such as helping that...

  • Very touching stories from a variety of different perspectives. The parts that stood out to me were:

"You can't make a sad situation happy but we can make things as good as we possibly can."

    "My heart was breaking."

"Lighting those cigarettes was probably as important as many of the medical things I did for him."

"The day that I come away from...

    Lovely idea.

  • Brilliant learning experience!

  • I feel unsure and nervous when doing role play but have found it really helpful. because it pushes me out of my comfort zone. It helps me feel how a patient or client might possibly feel as well.

  • I totally agree with you, Elizabeth.

  • Amanda, thank you for highlighting that everyone is different when faced with talking about death. This is really helpful.

  • What Lynn provided for the student nurses was fantastic. It provided an understanding of empathy- putting yourself in the patients' shoes, in their situations. The way they were learning was personalized which would have given them a chance to relate to patients and experience a bit of what the patients were going through. I am so inspired by this training as...

  • I totally agree, Lisa, that there is a time and a place for both fast and slow healthcare. I feel that it is really important to give each person the time that they need. I am also aware of the importance of time boundaries for a number of different reasons.

  • I think if we can really be present for a person, in the moment, with them and alongside them.

  • I truly believe that an interaction can have a significant impact on a person- no matter how short or long that interaction may be and even if it is the only time it will happen. I feel that the quality of the interaction is the most important aspect over the quantity. I just think of the tiniest interactions I have experienced during my life and even a...

  • This story is so beautiful. I have so much respect for the members of staff- really inspiring. It shows how much they cared and that they actively thought creatively and gave time and effort to organize this surprise.

  • Looking forward to learning this week! :)

  • That is lovely to hear, Jocelyn. You're so right- never underestimate the power of listening. Sometimes it is all that is needed rather than pieces of advice or opinions.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this insight. I've found this really helpful because I'm currently working with people who have dememntia. I totally agree that listening and interpreting is so important. I've also been trying to piece together and make links between what a person says and what they may be trying to communicate because I sometimes find it...

  • Linda, I totally agree with this. A really good example of sincere empathy.

  • Lovely to hear these comments. I felt that they highlighted what compassion looks like to a patient.

  • Thanks Elaine. It has been such a great learning experience and a chance to meet new people in health care.

  • That's no problem! There were a lot of great photos and comments there yesterday- would've been a shame to miss out. Glad you got a chance to put a contribution up as well. I'm really enjoying the course so far. Hope you are too!

  • Hi Louise, it sure is! Thank you. Yeah I'm really enjoying this course- it's a great learning experience. Which area of work are you involved in?

  • So lovely to hear. I have enjoyed this course so much and am really looking forward to week 2.

  • I truly believe that everyone has the potential to learn compassion or to improve in compassion. I feel that there is always room to learn how to grow in this area.

  • Really like how you put this: "a human emotion prompted by the pain of others"

  • Wow that is a brilliant definition. I think it puts compassion into words perfectly.

  • After watching the video, these two comments stood out to me the most:

*At the heart of compassion is respect that this is another human being that you are in the position of looking after- a privileged position

*compassion is absolute love with a doing aspect in a professional way

  • Loved this video. Super inspiring.

  • Hi Lisa! Looking forward to hearing more about your work as well.
