This course has been well thought-out and well presented.
Don't you just love Professor Bauer. He is a true academic and gentleman.

  • I have been to Yad Vashem twice - the first time was through a veil of tears. The childrens' area was particularly difficult. 85 of my Dutch relatives did not survive. The youngest was only one. To 'comfort' me I was told that the heavy cyanide gas went down to the ground and then rose up - the children died quickly and early as they were closest to the...

  • Wise words from Dr Imber. Judaism teaches the moral life and the strong bonds and benefit of family. What ever else in the ghetto inmates hung onto life.

  • This is why Yad Vashem is so important. There was once when an important politician was visiting Israel for the first time. He was taken to lay a wreath at Yad Vashem. He asked the question - why do you Jews keep on about the Holocaust - the reply given was - because it happened.
It is said that Napoleon walking in front of a synagogue. He heard crying from...

  • Of course it is difficult to explain the Holocaust to growing children. It is difficult to grasp the Holocaust. Many adults have difficulty in understanding the concept - 6 million Jews of all ages is staggering to understand. This is why there are so many Holocaust deniers.

  • This does not surprise me. In Israel in the 1960 was the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Many young Israelis did not know who Eichmann was. I am now wondering how many young Israelis would know today who Eichmann was.
Eichmann stated he did not harbour ant particular hatred towards the Jews other than the racism common post WW1. He had a willingness to participate...

  • to me atrocity images are only those which involve human images

  • This week I came to a complete stop - my mind was swinging everywhere - how to teach the Holocaust without causing 'damage' to the pupil. How old is the pupil, is the pupil Jewish, is there any anti-Semitism about the school's area. I would not like to teach a teenager about the Holocaust only to have the pupil engaged in anti-Semitism. There is so often heard...

  • we these names added to the Righteous Gentiles

  • What support do teachers receive before commencing the teaching of pupils

  • You are surprised that the lack of understanding from the English youth.
Why would they be told anything. Unless they were born prior to WW2 why
knowledge include the Jews and Holocaust. They may have picked up a little knowledge but in formal education none. They seemed to know how Hitler was. Such pupils would be interested in the'full story'

  • What is an option that the Holocaust be not be taught in a History class.
Perhaps a non-history class teacher could arranged to have a history teacher be invited to teach a Holocaust lesson to this no-history class - maybe once a week for six weeks - only a thought

  • I would have believed that Yad Vashem would be able to produce teaching materials to be used throughout the world.
I have a problem - Holocaust taught at school. Child goes home and talks to parents who do not approve of what has been taught at school - a rather explosive result which could distress the teacher and other pupils. Antisemitism is on the...

  • I consider the main problem is to teach an understanding of hate and antisemitism. How can a teacher discuss the Holocaust at this time of increasing antisemitism. We read of the increasing antisemitism in the world, especially in England. The teacher has to modify the attitude antisemitism before being able to teach the Holocaust, the hate and the...

  • The Holocaust has to be taught simply because it happened.
There is the problem with the word Holocaust. Initially this was the word given by Jews precisely to the period of catastrophic murder of millions of Jews as a result of the antisemitic belief by the Nazis during their period as the government of Germany and during the WW2. Since WW2 the world has...

  • I am alive - where was my G-d - I am alone - where can I go - where should
I go - who will care for me - I need food - I need care - but most of all I need love - I need someone to give me hugs - then and only then I may be able to feel human - but can I start living a new life - my old life has died - but can ever forget what has happened - I saw it all - I...

  • Yes - Corbyn. It is said - you can tell when a country is in trouble - that is when the Jews start leaving

  • @JudyRegan Thanks Judy - I have done the two previous Yad Vashem courses with FutureLearn In one course is 'a day in the life of a Jewish prisoner' - it is the very worst article I have heard or seen. I just keep thinking of my one year old relative and the complete loss of all of my entire Dutch family after 400 years in Holland.

  • How - why

  • My son-in-law, non-Jewish, his Dutch family de Wit, has 11 Righteous Gentiles. His father was advised to leave Holland as he was 'wanted' by the Nazis due to his ability to save Jewish lives. He left Holland and migrated to Australia.
85 members of my Dutch Jewish family did not survive - the youngest was only 1. It is all very sad. I still have great...

  • We Jews are a stubborn people. Antisemitism began with Paul and it is due to Paul that the infant religion of Christianity was to become. So the early Christians were Jews as was Christ. The Jews at the time did not accept Jesus as a messiah. Paul advised his followers that in his 'religion' (a breakaway sect of Judaism) there were no dietary laws, alcohol was...

  • always have a 'packed' bag
that is why the Jews play violins rather than pianos

  • @HeikeOtterson It is very interesting to visit Prague to visit the Jewish museums and the wonderful artifacts - Prague was under the control of Nazis who sent beautiful and amazing artefacts to be used as a museum of a people who no longer 'exist' and had been 'cleansed' from the world as unsuitable people. The Museums are located in Prague synagogues which...

  • This is a very sad period for me. 85 members of my extended Dutch family all did not survive. The youngest was just one year old. My Dutch family can be accurately traced back to 1633 - now none. I was born in peaceful Australia just prior to WW2. The story of my Dutch family was taught to me during my younger years. But there is a 'ray of sunshine'. My...

  • Initially the Nazis wanted the Jews deported from Poland and Germany. After the invasion of Russia, the Nazis had control over millions of Jews. It was not possible to deport so many Jews. It was only towards the end of 1941 that the Nazis decided to murder the Jews. Initially this was done by mass shootings. Is there any evidence as to what other methods were...

  • I was not aware that there were independent mass killings in Romania and Croatia before German invasion of Russia. Did the Germans authorise these actions. When were the Germans made aware of these information.

  • in spite of all the humiliation and loss of dignity thrust upon them the Jews exhibited care and support for other Jews - the Jewish traditional values remained an unbreakable principle of maintaining basic human dignity

  • It is hard to be Jewish. There is the constant message - remember you were once slaves in Egypt. It is a great pity that the Evian conference which could have made such a benefit was such a complete and total failure. Remember you were once slaves in Egypt and no country was willing to accept any refugees. Was the true reason antisemitic. Many countries...

  • If the Jews in Germany were able to emigrate successfully would the murder of the Jews during the Holocaust have proceeded. What a question.
Were the countries who won WW1 and made the reparations by Germany so severe, were these countries aware of the major problems causing Germany to go to war again. If the reparations to Germany were less severe, would the...

  • Yes - I understand the racism of the Nazis. Yes - I can understand the Nazis wanting to develop the Aryan race. I can understand their antisemitism but why the murder. The Nazis were excellent in their ability to teach their antisemitism to conquered countries during the War. But the Nazis lost that War. In losing the War it would explain that antisemitism...

  • Inga, that is the problem. The Jews were invited into Poland to assist with the finance and trading. But it was an accident waiting to happen. It was inevitable. The Jews were quite separate from the Polish peoples. One example is that the Jews would not eat with the Polish people due to our dietary laws. The religions were so very different. The Jews were...

  • I can understand antisemitism and expulsion of Jews over the centuries from almost every country of our world. There were the Crusades and the progroms in Russia but nowhere was there mass murder of Jews. We Jews are a people of peace - Jews seek peace - we are a peaceful people - after 70 AD we do not wage war - we have no standing army before 1947 - I cannot...

  • was the Nazi's treatment of the Jews hatred or fear. How is it that the Nazis thought it possible to teach hatred of the Jews to the German nation and then to teach hatred among the Middle and Eastern European countries that the Nazis conquered. I have difficulty in trying to understand their antisemitism and their need to kill Jews. I cannot understand...

  • Hi all - I am an 81 years old retired medial practitioner in Sydney, Australia.
I lost 85 distant Dutch relatives during the Holocaust. Whenever I get an opportunity I teach the Holocaust but the most difficult people I have spoken to are my grand-children. I tell them how difficult it is to be jewish and how difficult it is to hate.

  • A wonderful course - everything is in simple terms that I can understand.
I have enjoyed this course greatly and have learned a great deal of knowledge. I would recommend this course even to see these excellent graphics. Full marks to those involved in setting the syllabus.

  • Again my 7 year old grand-daughter will say that there is water and good weather to sustain life in some of the rings around Saturn. Sometimes she amuses me - 'Grandpa, can bees sting one another' - 'Grandpa why do we have two lungs'

  • Gulp - I showed this topic to my 7 year old grand-daughter. She looked at me and said - 'I know that grandpa' . She is the youngest of my 10 grand-children.

  • The enthusiasm of this presenter was wonderful to see and she explained so clearly - thank you

  • I wish to thank all my fellow students for your birthday greetings.

  • Kevin COLLINS made a comment

Now you have seen what Orion looks like in the night sky - well I hope so

  • Kevin COLLINS made a comment

I hope I have found it - in my younger days, we called it the sauce pan

  • The night sky has always baffled me - I have tried but I have to admit my 7 year old grad-daughter knows more than I do - but she is brilliant.
I hope to be able to follow this, I truly do, however I live in Sydney, Australia.
Oops I forgot to say that next week I shall be 81 - hip hip hooray

  • I truly enjoyed this course. As a health-conscious consumer I found this course to stimulate me to look deeper into my diet. I am most fortunate that I live in Australia where a huge variety of top quality produce is constantly available and at a reasonable price.

  • I forgot to mention
When asked how I wish to be remembered I reply frequently

  • @TraceyT In Australia if a relative or friend of an older person was to show a birth certificate to their local Member of Parliament the request list simply follows.

  • @PETAJELLIS I advise you to do a quick course on FutureLearn on the topics of genes and stem cells. Those living to 150 will not appear as an 'old' person. Using stem cells will open new worlds in the practice of Medicine.

  • There is one very major problem with 'superfoods' - yes there are foods which are of benefit to the human. Those coming to mind immediately are iodine, fluoride, fibre, folate, iron. The problem is how are these so called 'superfoods' prepared. Significant and important nutrition in a 'superfood' may be lost in cooking. The importance of the nutrition, if...

  • It is my opinion that the photograph of Kensington Palace is awful.
We now have what I call the dianafication of death.

  • G'day - thanks for your reply. I ask you to write a eulogy for yourself. Then gradually look at it - additions, deletions, etc. Get the message across what and how you want those at your funeral to remember you.
It is a great and wonderful experience.

  • The last funeral I attended, the man was 94 and he was buried on his birthday. We all sang 'Happy Birthday'
Why do we need music ?

  • I have chosen my funeral director, I have written my eulogy, I have purchased my cemetery plot and I have written the wording for my memorial stone.
At many funerals, prayers are said but really are they of any benefit to the deceased. I like to think of death as the ancient Egyptians did - simply pack your bag and move over the road

  • ageing is natural - death is inevitable - the person who will live 150 years has already been born - in the British Commonwealth we receive a telegram from the sovereign

  • no - come and see me in the 22 century

  • 1. not many patients with terminal cancer suffer pain
    2. 'unlikely to be supported by doctors' now in the 21 century - perhaps in 22
century assisted dying may be the norm
    3. if assisted dying is not supported by doctors how does the patient get the
necessary medication - perhaps the laws need altering to include that
    doctors cannot be...

  • Compassion Cities is a growing movement in Australia and New Zealand.
Those living alone, especially if house bound should get a telephone call from a volunteer every day to check. I have a local 'next door neighbour' group which is computer based. Those living alone can email as often as they want, at least once a day.

  • Compassion Cities is a growing movement in Australia and New Zealand.
As far as possible, nobody should die alone. Those living alone, not restricted to malignant disease but especially if house bound should get a telephone call from a volunteer every day to check.
I could think of nothing worse than dying alone and on the floor.

  • are hospices considered part of a hospital or a separate identity
I consider a hospice to not be part of a hospital

  • Many important issues to be discussed from this topic
When should a patient be told that death is near
When should the patient's family be told that death is near
Who should tell the family - the patient or the medical staff
Plans should be made for funeral and disposal before a death has occurred and these plans should be followed after the death
    If a...

  • I am not afraid of dying. I am 81 years old and apart from irregular joint pain in low back and knees I remain in 'good' health. I cannot take long walks nor up hill. If the Angel of Death knocks on my front door I shall take my leave from my wife, contact my children and leave with the Angel. I have already written my eulogy. Writing my eulogy was a very...

  • as stated above a good death in general accord with the patient's and with the families wishes.

  • Interesting that dementia is a bad death - I would have thought otherwise. I consider a bad death is when a person dies leaving their body with a distorted face - for example gasping for air or in significant pain. Not nice.
Death is a purely personal experience. Others beside the body at the moment of death will have their own feelings at that very moment of...

  • Kevin COLLINS made a comment

Death is simply the loss of life. It cannot be defined as each death is unique to that individual. The death process can be long or short. Everything on G-d's earth which has life must eventually die whether it be a human, an animal, an insect or even a flower. Being human we have been given the ability to think and interpret but death is one of those...

  • I have been very pleased participating in this course again - I have learned a much greater knowledge. I love China and everything that goes with this love of your country. Your course is excellent - setting the syllabus trying to cover aspects of the modernisation of China is four weeks is impressive. Well done.

  • China is not the only country who places the importance of education to the family members. New cities like this one sound very attractive and would be a pleasant place to visit. Since the time of Deng, China has made wonderful progress but the progress should not develop so rapidly to threaten China's culture, history and family traditional values. I love...

  • It appears that in the rush to modernisation, these new towns are devoid of character. The loss of the 4000 persons in agriculture and fishing is sad as with them went the culture and the cohesion which was present prior to the building of the new city. However, having a university will be a sound basis for a character city to develop in time.

  • What a wonderful week 3 it has been. Explaining the change that the computer and the mobile phone have made to the well established Chinese culture illustrates the Chinese people have become eager to self improvement
and increased literacy. It also reveals how the literacy rate has increased by the movement of rural dwellers into the cities. I can imagine...

  • The new 'additions' to the previous course were excellent. The topics were very well presented and full of words of wisdom. I live in 'peaceful' Australia and I am aware of the increased antisemitism both here and overseas. I pray regularly that my grand-children will live in a time of peace and tolerance. That humans are living longer, so I believe...

  • An excellent thought provoking course well explained by a Professor with an absolute love of his subject and with a wonderful accent. The different types of allergic reaction and immune system response are well presented in a most logical manner. I shall recommend this course.

  • @JohnSaunders Understand that Trump is engaged in deliberate, atrocious, targeted antisemitism towards Chairman Schiff. Then ask yourself why no one cares to denounce it – esp when his accusation of it towards others drove full news cycles earlier this year,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Saturday, with a retweet of an article in The Intercept suggesting that...

  • This is the very first time I have seen quotes from the Koran regarding the attitude of Muslims to both Judaism and Christianity. For this I thank you sincerely. I knew it was from the Koran that the Jews were called the People of the Book. I also knew that initially the Jews and the Christians were held in high regard.

  • @ANGUSLOGAN The early Israeli settlers worked on the land which was bought from the Arabs. Money to purchase the land was donated by diaspora Jews through the Jewish National Fund, JNF, which still exists.

  • @JohnSaunders If you did not watch this for yourself, it would be hard to believe. Is it ignorance? Is it racism? When college students are asked certain questions, is it wrong to expect them to have an answer that shows some awareness of reality? What is it that can cause students in university to believe that President Donald Trump is worse than Adolf...

  • This occurred in Melbourne, Australia last week
A 12-year-old Jewish student was forced to kneel down and kiss the shoes of a Muslim classmate, while a five-year-old boy was allegedly called a "Jewish cockroach" and repeatedly hounded in the school toilets.

  • a predisposition to allergy is inherited from our parents

  • I have six grandchildren who all have allergy with infantile eczema. The cause in one is peanuts. The cause in the other five is not known. One granddaughter only began to have regular sleep at night after turning five. Prior to her fifth birthday, she had interrupted sleep due to waking to scratch her itch.

  • @SueG I totally agree with your comment. I agree with Dr Hirsh's description of Israel as a 'keystone'. I also agree with your comment that Israel is strong. A novel product by the Israel in 2018/2019 allows soldiers to convert humidity in the air into drinking water. Israel has developed the iron dome defense systems. Israel is no longer agricultural and is...

  • @JamesS I have read the newspaper article.
I shall wait until others have made comments and answer all at the one time. I undertake many FutureLearn courses. Very rarely do I make comments on the topics but in this case I disagreed with your comment. During the Holocaust, 85 of my Dutch relatives did not survive. My non-Jewish son-in-law comes from a Dutch...

  • I sincerely and totally disagree with your comment about your President. The shooting in Pittsburg was horrific and unexpected. Your President went to Pittsburg to offer his sympathy, comfort and compassion to the relatives and congregation and abuse was given to him. What did the Jewish congregation expect your President to do. His presence was an act of...

G'day - such beautiful words - yarn, mob - these words were commonly used in the Australia in which I grew up - fair dinkum - such words were lost in the post war Australia - the migrants made us speak proper English. Now on to me. I am a fat grumpy old man - now over 80 - and retired. I used to be a General Medical Practitioner in Redfern, in the inner suburb...

  • what a wonderful discussion - I once attended a performance of Beethoven's
ninth symphony played in 37 minutes
I enjoy the full orchestration of the Russian composers of the early 20th century

  • what a pleasant course - I found it a little puzzling at times but the course was always stimulating and enjoyable - a sincere thank you

  • and the dish ran away with the spoon.
I shall persist with the course but I am finding it very difficult.
Sorry but my brain is simply not working. Such a pity.

  • Thanks

  • I live in Sydney, Australia. I have have tried to convert these lessons into what I would expect the weather to be in the Southern Hemisphere. The results I have in the quizes show that I am an abject failure. I am not doing well at all. I am hoping that my learning will improve through this week's lessons. But I am old, being over 80 years. Sorry, but the...

I am the greatest procrastinator since Hamlet. These last two sessions have helped me so much. My sincere thanks.

  • To my presenters, I promise you all that I shall not give up my day-time job.

  • I shall have to take this lecture a little slower. I am over 80 years old. I have had less than 5 wonderful outstanding days in my life. Several years ago I was in Quito and while I was there I went to a 'native' village right on the Equator. This day was so wonderful and surprising. I told the 'natives' that as an 'old' grand-father I should have known these...

What a wonderful experiment. I shall perform this tomorrow for my grandchildren. I have never seen this before. Excellent.

  • I shall agree with you that computers did precipitate a lot of the learning of English. I am a racist - it is difficult for me to understand the propaganda from America - movies, music, television Santa Claus, coke - 'policeman of the world' - I would rather be British than American - as Gilbert & Sullivan wrote - in spite of all temptation to join another...

  • There was a civil service remaining which allowed the country to succeed successfully. India is so enormous. But what was done in India was also done in the other smaller colonies.. • Thank you for your reply. I do not think of disingenuous. Whenever I think of the British Empire, I think of India, West Indies and Africa. I was born between the Wars, born in Australia, lived my life only in the British Empire. I was a 'product' of Empire. I am an ardent Royalist. The British Empire was both good and bad. But after World War ll, when...

  • Ahh! These wonderful uniforms - when you 'employ' people you certainly had to dress them correctly - no matter where these people worked, even in the tropics, they had to wear western style clothing - a very British way of life.

  • English is the international language. Just try the countries that do not speak English but not in to 'tourist' areas. - Vietnam where English is not taught at school, Japan where English is not taught until age 14, and Spain. Singapore is way ahead as at Independence English was made the state language.
