  • Thank you for putting together the course! It was interesting to see the theories behind the differences made.

  • Speaking out, rather than just ignoring, injustice e.g. people being spoken over/ignored

  • The inspiration here, in my view, is Mo's willingness to take a step back and reflect on her own actions before putting the blame elsewhere. With this self-awareness we can see the change we can make which can have a snowballing effect of benefit.

  • Hi, I'm Shruti. Currently living in Edinburgh, Scotland but work as a biomedical engineering researcher at a university. I'm interested in creating a multidisciplinary environment to understand and evaluate prosthetic sockets for people with amputations.

  • I think the first ever chatbot I remember was back when MSN was the Instant Messenger to use - "SmartChild". This takes me back maybe 10 years or so! More recently, the chatbots for customer services or health.. My GP is only and uses a chatbot to help direct questions or advise on next steps for symptoms. The ones that really bug mea re the complaints ones...

  • I use Vancouver for my referencing style, but the great thing about EndNote is that I can just pick the one I need if it ever needs changing and it does it automatically.

I need quite a focussed literature review to justify this particular project, but it's important for me to explain the wider context to begin with. I think that's the case for a lot of...

  • I'm finding that there's not much out there that is directly relevant to my project. Instead I'm finding somewhat related things in other application areas to use to back up the points I'm making.

I use EndNote as that's what is supported by my university through the librarians and courses. I've never used a software for my references before, but I'll never...

  • A smartwatch and mobile application e.g. Fitbit to monitor your own health, encourage healthy activity and provide tips. A self-care technology.

I am looking at creating a Supportive Care technology as part of my PhD - to monitor the environment in a prosthetic socket with information and alerts on the mobile application and also monitoring from the...

  • ehealth: electronic, monitoring, alerts, selfcare
My association: monitoring of the environment in the socket of a prosthetic limb, both in the clinical and as part of everyday life.

  • I am creating an e-health technology as part of my PhD so I am doing the course to get an idea of what else is out there and the considerations in the area.

  • I need to write a literature review for my 9 month progress report for my PhD, but will hopefully need to for future papers and definitely as a chapter of my thesis. There isn't really a set length - just enough to justify and give context to my project. There isn't loads of literature in my area of research so I'm coming to realise that my literature review...

I am in the field of Biomedical Engineering, specifically lower limb prostheses.
The research is split along the spectrum of engineering and medicine, depending on the focus of the paper. The engineering ones are more numbers driven with the medical ones relating more to people and assessment of medical conditions.

  • I've written several literature reviews so far for my theses and assignments in my undergraduate and masters. I'm now writing more for my PhD assignments and hopefully for papers in the future. As I've gone through education I've noticed the change in the style of literature reviews as mentioned in the video. The transition from being more descriptive to...

  • I'm looking at translating the use of a clinical monitoring technology for amputees from the research environment to the clinical one in the form of a mobile application. A combination of engineering and medicine.

  • Hi, I'm Shruti and I live in London, UK. I love reading research to find out the why behind things that we hear/are told. I want to learn more about literature review writing as I'm currently doing a PhD and I have my first assessment due in October, part of which is a literature review.

  • Hi, I'm Shruti. I'm currently studying at University of Southampton for a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering. I have previously used several 3D printers and built one as part of a group 3 years ago.

  • I agree, I tend to blog to get things out of my head - I find it helps me process things a lot better. Blogging is very personal, I feel - I am a pretty new blogger but looking at others I've found so many different styles a good read.
My blog is www.ifopportunitydoesntknock.wordpress.com if you'd like to take a look :)

  • I've found this course a great way to find out a little more about Digital Marketing. I signed up to the course for interest as I'm still at university with no defined career path yet. I've found it a great start which has made me think about things differently and has provided a different perspective to something I thought I knew a lot about just by being...

  • A generic referral email or a generic share on Facebook really doesn't make me want to buy something or donate to a cause. I just view it as spam - even from "trusted friends". For me, the thing that really motivates me is an actual conversation about it, whether online or in person, it makes it personal rather than just something else you see. I would say it...

  • I haven't got out of my way to use any. BUT, I have come across the "stats" and "insights" on some of the websites I use. For instance, I monitor the insights on my Facebook page and the stats for my wordpress blog. These are great for the basics to see that there are people that look at what I'm doing and click on my posts etc. They don't really tell me much...

  • I think there is a fine line between things being of interest to you and things being creepy! I know that when I've used amazon to have a look at some things and then I go onto Facebook and they're advertising what I just looked at, I find it both creepy and annoying. I like to do my research in a time that suits me, I don't want adverts trying to sell me...

I've found this weeks stuff really quite interesting - it makes you think of a side to digital marketing that you never really do as a consumer. I use Facebook (and other social media sites) like many other people, but I've never thought about the fact that one day it could all just get wiped in an instant!

I like the different perspective this week has...

  • Music, social media (facebook, twitter, linkedin) and so photographs and videos, also games/apps on my phone/tablet
My Facebook is really important, more for the pictures I store on it that the games or anything else. There are other ways to keep in contact with people. the rest are just ease of use rather than personal value. My music is really important,...

  • I would say depends on the circumstance - if I was going to a particular place to watch something happening that would only happen once, I would much rather watch it than get my phone out to see what else happened. If it's a day trip and I have spare time to look around and rest, I think it'd be great to see what else happened there. Though, that would depend...

  • Definitely, that was what I was sort of hinting at in my post. The extra things that aren't taken into account with the question e.g. how many people are you shopping for?
I shop solely for myself so my shopping bill is much lower than what yours would be. Also, geographical location makes a difference because cost of living is different around the world.

  • I'm quite surprised by the amount people spend on their weekly shop (for groceries only!) but there are many factors that haven't been taken into account so I think a more in depth study would yield different results.

I think that as time goes on more and more people will use smartphones and other multichannel options to conduct their shopping. I know I...

  • It's amazing the information that has been gained from such seemingly impersonal questions on such a basic survey! It makes you wonder how much your being read into when using the internet and how things are targeted! Feels a little Big Brother like!

  • Yes, I remember watching this. I remember his vessel but other that that I watched it the whole thing with no advertising at all. The passive advertising of logo placement is not so bad, but I would have been really annoyed if I had banners or pop ups whilst trying to watch this. Moreover, the fact that Red Bull had sponsored the attempt and so had their logo...

I've found the course so far a really good insight into what is such a huge topic. It's good to see the impacts and consumer views of digital marketing as well as the view of the businesses. The 'story telling' definitely captures you, rather than reading about this method or that technique.

This really makes me want to develop my digital marketing skills...

  • I think these two different case studies show that it's a skill to use digital marketing effectively and that must be paired with adequate resources to sustain a good online presence.

Good research on what's out there, who you're targeting and the way they like to see advertising is key to the success of digital marketing. It's also useful to have a plan...

  • I think this is really important - far too many people dive straight in to things because it's the new thing without thinking about what they're actually doing or what would happen if it doesn't work out.

  • All in all, I think there are valid points on both sides. I'm probably more of a skeptic when it comes to success rates and I've never been a fan of being 'profiled' based on my social media or other clicks/searches.

However, I do think that businesses are going to need to get in touch with social media marketing in the near future to stay competitive. I...

  • Digital marketing is definitely an advantage for the companies that have the resources for it: it's a quick way of getting a message out to hundreds of thousands of people. This does, however, disadvantage those who do not have the resources to do it.

As a consumer, I don't like adverts all over the websites/apps that I use - they just get annoying. It's...

  • This is so true, more true that any of us realise until we think about it. Especially being of uni age, where so many of my hardworking and career focussed friends are also posting loads about their social lives online. It amazes me that they don't think about who searches for you during job applications. I think part of it is that they don't think people...

This glossary looks great - can't wait to see why Bruce Willis has been mentioned!

  • Heyy!

I signed up about an hour ago. I haven't really done much in terms of digital marketing before, at least not 'officially'. I'm just hoping to explore something new and get involved! I think it's something I'd want to do after I graduate so thought I'd give it a try!

    Shruti :)
