  • That was awesome and informative. Many thanks for the appropriate approaches day discussed.

  • To the tutors, the message would be formal because they're also expected to deliver a structured lesson.

For the clients, the message could even be more formal since it's a business transaction and may require some legal backings.

The message for student would be more of a personal approach such that even the least knowledgeable would be able to get...

  • I like the aspect of body language, eye contact and the aspect of exercise.

However, I've learned to be more careful when using body because it could make or mar the intended message.

  • TEAMS is also a great social communication platform especially for virtual meetings either official or academic.

I'm familiar with the five main ways of communication listed above. However, I use each for different purposes. I prefer Email when it's formal or official while the social media serves in informal purposes except it's more preferred by the...

  • Well, I have learned that I need to be more patient in processing a piece of information before responding and to ensure that I'm actually going to respond and not react.

  • It's very much possible to be oneself at work. Reason being that, if there exists a kind of different factions or caucuses in a work place, then, one may decide not to belong but just be oneself. Another instance is if a worker is an introvert and no effort is made to bring him/her out of his/her shell, then, such may find it difficult to mingle and get along...

  • Wow! Excellent concept.

  • That was an interesting segment. It's certainly not an easy task especially for Ali, if you ask me.

  • The self-assessment exercise revealed alot to me.

  • My most conscious moments are when I'm having a general discussion with my acquaintances and work team. But I get mad at times when I'm offended.

However, I've learned from this course to always try to take a deep breath in unfriendly situations in order to ride the wave of emotions that may arise so as to be able to process the information and respond ...

  • Hello! My name is Adeyinka. Nigeria is my nationality and I live in a suburb of Lagos. I'm participating in this course to improve on my communication skills.

  • Now, I know what soft skills are. I can't wait to get started.

  • I knew it!

  • Good to meet you Prof. Linda and Ms Haley.

  • Basically, his improvement in the second attempt could be seen more in terms of cohesion. Although, there was coherence in the two attempts.

  • In the improved attempt, he was able to itemize the reasons some students drop out and of school in a logical manner.

  • I did the speaking practice but couldn't drop the link here.

  • To be sincere, I'm learning chunking and pausing in English for the very first time. Though, it might be that I'd come across it but didn't pay attention to details.

  • It may be quite challenging but with this course, it would become surmountable easily.

  • It first part was very much educative. Many thanks to Jose, Ming Wei and others who contributed from their wealth of knowledge.

  • Obviously, her second attempt is way better than her first attempt. Although, there are still some grammatical inadequacies in the second attempt.

For example, the second paragraph could be better expressed thus:

... One of the reasons I don’t like to follow a recipe is because they have a lot of ingredients.

In like manner, the third paragraph could...

  • I spent a whole lot of time typing but couldn't submit. How painful it was!

  • Apparently, the scope of collocation is wide but I've learned a handful more from this particular activity.

  • Alright, I appreciate.

  • It's really pretty cool getting to learn some new stuff hear!

  • First attempt: ...my parents want to take after them...
Improved attempt: ...my parents want to look after them...

First attempt: ...I always feeling very boring...
Improved attempt: I was always feeling very bored...

First attempt: ...I need to learn hard....
Improved attempt: ... I need to study hard...

  • I would call on you once I arrive at the city.

I'm better at English than Mathematics.

  • Obviously, she spoke quite better at her second attempt. She made error-free sentences and spoke without loss of coherence.

  • Well, it's not bad for Ming Wei to be worried about her pronunciations. Although, her pronunciation isn't bad. I think she'll be better in no time.

  • Hello everyone! My name is Adeyinka. I'm a Nigerian. I like reading. I hope to score nothing less than 9 when I sit for IELTS.

  • Pleased to meet you!

  • Many thanks for taking up this challenge. ...can't wait to learn from you.

Hello everyone! My name is Adeyinka. I'm a Nigerian. I like reading. I hope to get the best out of this course.

  • Well, I can't beat my chest to say that the former is ungrammatical because it's a book title and such is very much allowed.

Also, the latter is an idiomatic expression and cannot be proved wrong.

  • Wow! The video was quite amazing. It wasn't what I used to think but I know better now.

  • Hello!
My name is Adeyinka, I live in Lagos, Nigeria which is my Nationality. I'm a teacher by training and practice.

I'm interested in this course because I want to learn more about Lexis, Elocution and Semantics.

  • It's really great to meet the course team. In fact I can't wait to explore the rudiments of applied linguistics.

I look forward to having fun while learning new things.

  • I must affirm that this course has made a very big difference in my academic life.

I really wish I could proceed to a degree level at Conventry University.

Having said that, I appreciate the institution for this previlege.

    Long live Coventry University!

  • The two weeks course was quite tough, though it was really worthwhile. Everything was well understood and I'm glad to have participated.

Many thanks to Conventry University and Fiturelearn!

  • It's a good one. I'm glad my work was reviewed and I'm satisfied.

  • Foremost, I think Farah's knowledge of collocations is poor as well as the use of punctuations unlike Omar who observed the basic English mechanicals in his reply.

However, I feel courtesy demands Omar's response to the pleasantry 'How are you?'

By and large, Omar has done a great job with his reply. It's quite clear that he has greatly improved in the...

  • Literature is an academic book of stories, poems, plays and articles published about a particular subject for students' use as sources and creative development at a university.

Sources are literatures used by students at a university to get pieces of information that are useful as evidence for their assignments.

Scholarship is the correct application of...

  • I choose the first definition because it is more students friendly and has familiar words that are used in simple English.

More so, it contains a comprehensive structure of definiton - A, B and C.

  • What a deep dissection of the structure of definition! More ink to your pen!

  • That was indeed an insightful guide to understanding and recording spoken definitions.

  • The statistics of students who attend a lecture at a niversity here in my home country depends on the category of the the university as well as the faculty and department. More often than not, Business Administration usually has the largest number of students in all the universities. But generally, some private universities here minimize the numbers to world...

  • Yes, I've had a tutorial at a university. There's no difference actually because it was also an online course in one of the UK universities.

  • Yes, I have taken part in a seminar severally. In my own context, it was similar, just that debate wasn't common then.

  • Yes, I've been in a lecture but kinda different from Omar's experience. Lectures in my home country is not really interactive. Shocking enough, some lecturers don't even lecture, they sell handouts and expect students to make further research and get understanding in any way possible.

I'd really like to study in the UK but for the resources...

  • I'm pleased to hear Omar speak of his experience in the university. Also, it's really good to know what an assignment could look like at a UK university. Here in Nigeria, the illustration of a business and an engineering assignment is often referred to as an "Industrial Training/Attachment"

  • This activity has really impacted me. Without mincing words, Coventry University has discovered what the needs of students are when it comes to the use of English for academic study. Most especially, I've learned the contextual use of the prepositions "of" and "from" with the word "independent".
    Example sentences:
    1. Nigeria was independent from Britain in...

  • 1. lecture: a formal talk given to a group of people in order to teach them about a subject

    2. seminar: a meeting of a group of people with a teacher or expert for training, discussion or study of a subject

  • Alright, i can't wait to explore!

  • Without mincing words, i appreciate the access to Macmillan pronunciation dictionary as well that of Coventry University. However, on a more sincere note, i must affirm that every bit of the lessons was eye opening.

  • For me, all the lessons in week one are well understood. Many thanks to our educators.

  • Having read many of the comments, it is clear that a sizeable number of learners here see the phonemic aspect of English as a difficult task just as i used to but i was able to gain mastery in it by learning to transcribe the letter names first as follows:

    A/ei/ B/bi:/ C/si:/ D/di:/ E/i:/ F/ef/ etc.

I think this is a very good way to start and i...

  • Yes, i agree that both the phonemic transcription and the audio transcription are vital in the learning and usage of English.

  • Hello Tuz, you searched for 'resistant' instead of 'resilient'. I think that was a mistake. You may kindly revisit.

Also, 'partner' is not one of the words to search for. It is 'peers'.

Kindly refer back to the exercise to confirm my observation.

  • 1. A successful Coventry University student is confident, resilient(strong), understands their subject in detail, knows where they have gaps in their knowledge;

    2. A successful student is somebody who’s curious, is not afraid to ask questions and challenges their peers(course mates) and tutors to find answers;

    3. I think we look for our students to...

  • Not depending on other people for help is an essential attitude a student must have in order to succeed at university in the UK and to progress in future career.

  • The last substitution is most appropriate. I mean 'self sufficient'...

  • 'Government - ruled learning' is not an appropriate definition for 'independent learning' because 'government - ruled' is associated with politics and should be used in such context while 'self study' is an academic language and it's more appropriate to substitute it with 'independent learning' in the quote from the Deputy Vice Chancellor.

  • According to Omar, he had tried two different dictionaries which didn't really help him do his assignment. But the truth is, 'No knowledge is a waste'. Therefore by interpretation, the pieces of information provided by the first two dictionaries made his intelligibility easier when he consulted the third.

In that case, my opinion is that learners do not...

  • Personally, i go with the bilingual dictionary because it contains all the necessary information needed to make one know how to use the word especially the numerous synonyms given and the translation.

The only problem that might be encountered in real life day to day use of the dictionary is internet connection problem based on my location.

  • Though atimes, the meaning of a word could be explained in the context of use in the writeup. One could also guess in some situations; but i choose to use a dictionary after reading to the end in order to learn more about the word. (the origin, pronunciation, the part of speech and so on, are worth knowing)

  • These expressions are deep:

    1. ...their transferable skills...
    2. ...they critically evaluate, they innovate...

  • I mentioned in my prediction that a successful student is one who shows competence in his subject areas. For such to happen, it simply means such student has paid a rapt attention to the details of his lectures.

However, i didn't mention curiosity, self confidence, group learning and so on. I'm glad to have those points added to my insight.

  • The video is really revealing. I got quite a number of what i didn't predict.

According to the educators, a successful student is one who's curious, confident and resilient. Someone who critically evaluates, engages with other students and belongs to a learning community. Also, it's advisable to spend less time studying alone when there's an opportunity to...

  • The tips are helpful and very well noted.

  • A saying goes that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the same vain, a student can say he/she is successful when he believes that his/her mission for studying has been accomplished.

But in general, a student can be said to be successful when he's able to show competence theoretical and practical competence in his study area(s).

  • Hi everyone! My name's Adeyinka. I'm a Nigerian and I live in a suburb of Lagos where i hail from. My country is known as the giant of Africa and i'm proud to be a citizen.

Though we have revealing challenges, we've remained united. 59 years down the line from 1960 when we gained independence, we've spread all over the world like wild fire in harmattan...

  • @ShekkoLamorday Good to know that your country homes Nile.

  • It's pretty elating meeting you here. Have fun!

To Mary Forbes and her team; I applaud your passionate gestures for this course award aimed at giving charity support to aspiring learners who wish to climb the ladder of their academic dreams to the peak.

    More power to your elbows!

  • 1. Readers are leaders and whoever does not read cannot write. Hence, reading and learning are inseparable. Personally, reading is one of my hobbies.

    2. For me, it depends on what I'm reading for. If it's reading for examination, I prefer online or offline PDF but the reverse is the case when it comes to reading for pleasure.

  • Copy that!

  • Once again, thanks!

  • Thanks a million...! It was indeed an educative week for me.

  • Personally, what I found most useful was the presentation aspect. It was really an eye opener for me. It was really Impactful!

  • Yes,they were all on point! Copy that!

  • Joining a group as mentioned by one of the students is kinda close to my point of attending seminars and participating effectively in them.

  • If you ask me, I would say it would be a walk over for me because I'm sociable, my English is very strong and I'm confident speaking it.
    -
Actually, I planned to take part in a lot of seminars with a determination to participate actively in each. With that, I believe I could make as many friends as I wish.

  • Personally, it would go a long way to help me improve on subsequent presentations. If I passed well from the feedback given by my lecturers and peers, then, I would clap myself and look forward to a far better presentation but if it was the other way, I would challenge myself and buckle up.

  • To be truthful, I'm really surprised. However, all the stages are valid.

I would advise any student who's nervous about giving a presentation to prepare the material(s) to be presented first and then begin to practise in front of a mirror in plenty of time ahead. Also, he should make effort to commit about 80 percent of his points offhand.
    By this, he...

  • Yes, I've presented several times.

The first one I did was about Montessori method of teaching.

English is the lingua franca in my country, so I delivered in English.

I would always be pleased to present in English because it's what I teach.

  • Poon could prepare by following the steps below :

prepare well – Since he has some recommended articles to read, he should ensure he does that in plenty of time. He should think about the topic and decide on whether to agree or disagree with the submission. Thereafter, he should make notes of some of the opinions he would use to substantiate his own point...

  • The first thing that's needed done, I would say, is preparation. Poon has to prepare well for the seminar by reading wide about the topic.

As he does that, he needs to take a note in summary about the topic before him.

Determination: In the course of his preparation he must also be determined to carry his group members along with valid points from the...

  • Exactly! On point

  • Yes, I have. Not once or twice! Though official, my experience has being that group members leave the job for me and more often than not, I ignore them and do the job alone but when the job is successfully completed, we all take the glory for a job well done.

  • From my point of view, just as the formulated meaning of the word TEAM reads: Together Everyone Achieves More. I think this speaks volume about group work.

The only issue I think may not make group work successful is if the partners are not tolerant of one another's weaknesses.

Group members should be tolerant and teachable. Also, this principle, "If...

  • But, don't you think "selecting a group leader" sounds authoritative? For me, I suggest we ask for a volunteer first and if there's non, then we nominate and vote if need be.
