I'm a retired children's nurse but I didn't much like retirement so I've returned to work for a charity which supports women in the perinatal period who have emotional or mental health difficulties.

Women I work with sometimes tell me they have lost parts of their memory, for example they may not be able to remember their baby being born if the birth was traumatic or that they can't remember the order in which things happened. these women can sometimes keep looking at photographs that have been taken at the time in order to try to force themselves to...

  • Hi - I am a mental health support worker for a charity supporting people with perinatal mental and emotional health problems. I work with a lot of parents who have experienced trauma during labour and birth but who also those who are affected by earlier traumas in their lives. I'm very interested in shame and its effects on mothers in particular and how this...

  • Just reading about the link between gut and brain, eating and feelings and wondering how I can use this to help women I work with who are suffering anxiety and depression during the perinatal period.

  • I agree with most of the points already raised and I would add that children with disabilities are particularly vulnerable as are those who care for their own parents/siblings. Also children who are already in the social care or youth justice system are vulnerable and at risk.

  • Hello, I'm Julie. I'm here because I help facilitate a local support network for parents and also I am volunteering with an organisation supporting new parents with mental health issues. Anything I can learn about vulnerable children helps me to support and understand parents.

This is so beautifully written and honest - it has me in tears. Resentment, guilt and anger are my daily life too....thank you for sharing.

I think I've changed my position a bit and feel much more strongly that mental health is determined by social factors.
