Thank you for teaching me a topic which i wasn't quite knowledgeable about it was really useful.

  • I did a generalisation once on a friend before we knew each other better. It was when he transferred to our class, and he wasn't that much open, instead he was quite distant, but after a month of seeing him he was quite a friendly social and extrovert person.

  • For the first scenario I would estimate a very low probability close to 0.15 while for the second it will be close to 90 per cent because the more evidence you collect on a personality trait the greater the probability those evidence can be of support to your ideas especially in traits where there are many variables to consider. My understanding changed by...

  • When I tried to flip a coin 10 times in a raw in 3 different moments I had a higher probability of encountering 7 heads and3 tails whilst when I flipped 100 coins for 10 times in a raw I got less probability of encountering such a big difference in ratios. It was a really nice activity!

  • Without referring to the law of large numbers and knowing about the fundamental attribution error your estimate of him being nice to you after 1 time is greater than the actual probability.

On my experience so far I would like to know more examples or fields where the standard deviation, correlation, and the law of large numbers can be applied?

    Thank you...

  • I would consider a shorter interview to understand how the person presents himself to the job, and what is its drive to work for my company two variables that need to be considered but that will be done after a selection of the most interesting profiles.

  • For the first case the chance for him to be irritable would be 50/50, while for the second case the probability of him being irritable would be always 50/50 your perception would change though, and irritability depends also on the situation, and the way you approach your boss.

  • I would think that this could help especially in decisions like curfews, pandemics, voting, and market strategies, although it can also contribute in the scientific field especially in populations study.

  • I agree with your line of thought on using SD as a form of aid for analysis which contributes to decision making.

  • Looking at standard deviations could also benefit my reasoning giving me examples that go against or support my thesis.
Standard deviation also aids in changing prospectives or broadening your angle of view towards certain questions, or ideas.

  • Being 5'7'' the mean average, 5'10'' could be regarded as the closest value together with 5'4'' on the standard deviation scale.

  • Thank you for sharing the book reference, I am looking forward to learning more about this fascinating field with UoM.

  • Good afternoon, while doing this step I encountered some problems in viewing the course introduction video, is there any way I can get it to work?

  • Sorry if this article is not available to you, I used my institution access, it is quite an interesting recently written article about the evolution of endothermy. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01943-1
Leave a comment if you can read it and what you think, please?

  • I enjoyed this article, it discussed some interesting evolutionary theories, and it gave a reason for the size of the bird. It was quite a fascinating read.

  • Hello nice to meet you all I am Lorenzo from Namibia It is a pleasure to be part of this course!

  • To start my research I would go to the oxford enciclopedia of science and look for bacteria, and antibiotics. I would then go on wikipedia to see if there are any sources that are being suggested. At that point I would go on my OU library, and look for the books mentioned in the wiki bibliography. I would then go on the AcessScience database and look for any...

  • Scientific writing helped a lot through the pandemic in informing people on what to do to avoid the spread, how to behave, why it is important to get vaccinated, and the places to avoid to ensure you do not become contagious.

  • I agree with you it is quite useful to have a calendar to break your bigger catch into smaller chunks.

  • Target: Khan Academy complete close to 70 to 100% of the section on Precalculus
Measure: The results can be measured by watching the amount of material studied
    Achievable: Yes it is achievable
Relevant: Maths skill has an important role to play in science and completing this section should increase my confidence in this skill
    Time-bound: Cut-off date for...

  • This skill is difficult to master because I do not put enough effort and attention into it. I have experienced often delays in cut-off dates because of my lack of this skill. Unfortunately, most of the time I balance my time when reminded of it, when I start to follow certain plans I programmed is often too late. When studying I usually measure the time I...

  • I feel quite confident about nearly everything although I feel the need to refresh and get better in time management, and note-taking.

  • The course in itself approaches the themes with a new perspective, I am looking forward to learning with you!

  • Hello, my name is Lorenzo Tano Scarafia I am an Open University student.
I have completed my first year but still do not feel very much integrated into the online environment. I hope this course will give me the opportunity to sharpen some skills, and practice more to succeed in my studies.

  • @MuhammadAli Their is a pronoun, and it is used instead of the subjects to represent something-s or someone related to them. While There is used to present something.

    e.g.
There is a t-shirt which is all dirty, Jacob and John might have probably worn it on when they played in the mud, their t-shirt is now ruined.

There is a t-shirt where there is...

  • There is a town on the western side of lake Maggiore called Arona, it is an ancient town founded by some Celtic tribes.
It soon became a strategic point for its position close to the Longo bard capital Milan, and close to a vast source of water.
There was a family who ruled Arona and the other towns on the lake called Borromeo.
    A priest who helped save...

  • Thank you @BrianTurner for your advice! I think that reflecting on what you want to say, and the best ways to express it is key to writing a good essay that is going to be read, and commented on by more people.

  • The week was well structured it had a lot of interesting sections, though what I loved the most was helping another fellow learner through the comment's section. Thank you and would like to see more courses like this one.

  • Discuss the reasons why literature should be taught like science.
I have chosen this topic because I love the scientific method and working with hypothesis, and after reading an article about this topic I thought why not analyse it a bit more by writing an essay.

  • @abdelazizheddar everything that is impersonal like people choose, or for many people is..., or the reason why people are more interested... so using people could be a start.

  • Thank you for the advice

  • Nicely organised I can see logical connectors like in conclusion, and this essay will discuss... .

  • The essay divisions help a lot to give order and space to think through and develop your ideas. I think that also interviews follow a certain order similar to essays, and it is always like this when you are presenting your idea or opinion on a matter. Most of the time people forget to give a solution to the question presented, that's why it is important to...

  • yes

  • To degree in STEM with the highest marks, I will need to develop, and practice my study through the skills that I have acquired 6 hours a day for three years, the timescale is three years, the gathering of information given by tutors and finding of group of friends with whom I share the same goal of giving our contribution to the advancement of innovation in...

  • The two options which are considered an hard choice are for me on how to spend my time if to study an hour more or to spend that hour playing chess.
The advantage is that I speed through my studies, and develop more on my studying career, while if I play chess I develop more mental skills, and develop into a better player. I decided to play chess, yes it was,...

  • My own experience of receiving feedback shapes how I give a feedback to someone else by setting some guidelines or examples to follow if it had a positive impact and the opposite if the impact was negative.

  • Email/Skyping/Zoom are all really useful tools when it comes to meet and share thoughts, and progress in your learning with other fellow learners and course mates.

  • To learn online you have to be able to put aside your temporary pleasures for something more of a long goal.
I think that what I have to develop is a more mature sense of responsibility, a greater knowledge of work ethics and my critical thinking skills.

  • I carried out the O'Fortuna and the OpenScience Laboratory, I enjoyed both a lot the O'Fortuna was really easy, while the Open University Lab was the trickiest, though it is the most useful of the two. Thus I enjoyed by far the OU's Science Lab because it will be of great help for my studying progress. I have learned that not all learning is experienced...

  • I found as a source a website which referenced the Brill's Encyclopedia of the First World War.
For France there have been close to 1'927'000 deaths , 1'327'000 soldiers, and 600'000 civilians.
For Belgium there have been close to 88'000 deaths, 50'000 civilians, and 38'000 soldiers.
For the Austro-Hungarian Empire there have been close to 1'860'000...

  • Knowing how to differentiate between the different sources given, and finding sources which have good references is key in the beginning of an efficient research.

  • It is more focused, and less dispersive as an environment, I considered learning only to continue also to follow my passions, and impact less on my family's finances.

  • Learning can be seen both as scary and exciting, it all depends on how you want to see it.

  • I love receiving feedback especially the one which gives a positive criticism, and enhances my performances. I feel a a bit stressed when the feedback is close minded and doesn't give any chance of improvement. For me feedback doesn't change in effectiveness if given online or face to face, it may change in an emotional aspect.

  • I learn mostly online, I love practicing, taking courses, reading online, and writing on an online app.
The communication with my friends is mostly done online with a few exceptions like birthday parties, and gaming.
I'd like to have available also an i-pad, meanwhile I can resort also to a mac book.

  • I looked up for the fundamentals of chess, because I love the game and have a desire to learn how to play well.

I learn about capturing pieces, and the opening principles two great fundamentals of chess. It lead onto a series of exercises to practice what I have learned with some problems.
I develop a better understanding of the game, and a recognition of...

  • Hypglycemia and Hyper... tests should be taken on the cat's blood.

  • A reward might be to buy me a book I would love to read, or to buy me a course I like doing, or to meet with my friends.

  • Reading, practising, and testing myself is the way I study, usually to review I like to chat with a classmate to interrogate each other. Though I struggle mostly with revision as I don't know many techniques, and lack some will strength.

  • No my opinion hasn't changed I am glad that I submitter a good assignment.

  • I found some really interesting staff considering the two questions given.
Those are the articles I found :
    - https://medicalfuturist.com/robotics-healthcare/
    - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6546565/

  • Yes I would only if there is a study behind those prescriptions and there is an analysis behind the answers given by the robot. Because as far as I know we are still at a rather developmental stage of these technologies.

  • If I was in Angeline's position I would feel terrible especially for the lack of any emotional support, whilst in Yosi's situation the feeling would be the opposite.

The loss of human touch is terrible because since we were young we were used to some form of contact, but it is better to have no human touch in the case of Yosi while for Angeline is...

  • I would rather prefer the capsule robot because it is less painful, and more efficient.

  • Clinicians could be helped also in the email filtering, and the reception of a hospital to ensure people who are more at risk to be cured and taken care faster than others.

  • I wouldn't feel that much safe, even if they wouldn't have murderous intentions they could have malfunctions that have to be assisted by a bio engineer or mechanic.

I thing that having human interactions is of vital importance to restore and have a faster healing process especially if consisting in traumas, and social disable people.

  • Yes, I believe they will be able to improve and replace a human care giver, though to build empathy and compassion you'll need a really advanced AI.

  • Kinetics is the most important as it has to be not only adjust to the user size but much more important to allow the user to move and give the user the possibility to move without hurting himself. Yes the aesthetics is the least important of all for me because it only benefits the user temporarily and could go against the utility of the exoskeleton.

  • If a person doesn't manage to carry weights properly due to bad posture an exoskeleton could prevent a more serious damage and to recover and adapt a better posture.

  • When designing a robot I think three things are really important, to be useful, to be safe, and to be autonomous, and at the same time to advert the person using it about some things that should be done for maintenance.

  • I would love to acquire more knowledge, and understand better if robotics is made for me, not only I would love to understand better what is behind this market, and what are the relations in health care systems.

  • I plan to research for my future learn courses, I will definitely start my research from a document or an article to finish into a more detailed, and evaluated source. I like using the net especially youtube, internet archive, specific university libraries. I really enjoyed the critical thinking method followed by questions to look for descriptive, analytical,...

  • Saving the barrier reef is not an impossible task as such a task is difficult to maintain, though the coral reef can always come back, and stronger.

The coral reef has survived 25 million years, and now due to the high levels of acidification and rising temperatures there is a bleaching effect as Doc. Vernon says due to the release of algae by the coral in...

  • Museums, and artefacts from the past can often tell more about the life about ancient civilisations than the books and the written memories of some authors of the period. To find good resources I should have an open mind, and evaluate more than simply written sources.

  • It helps me move forward from observing something to formulating an idea, or to drive me to read something, and discern what should I focus on. Critical thinking drives me to evaluate my conclusions and to continue my journey through learning.

  • Secondary sources are faster to research on at the beginning to start looking for some primary sources to study in more detail and then pass to the best analysis and best critics of the primary source I have studied. I like gathering knowledge in various topics, especially after being caught by some news or articles.

  • Yes I feel much more confident having learned there are more ways than using a search engine to find the information I want.

  • FIND WORDS WITHIN TEXT + TITLE + URL, ETC.
Find web pages where your search terms are in different locations. Ie - in the page body text, page title, URL, etc. For this use intext: before your keywords.

  • It would help me articulate my research results, and direct me to the sources I especially need. I am used to forget about their existence.

  • I start with a branch of the topic I want to research to finish on a project done to understand better the branch at the end I find myself highlighting what I find useful for my research. The tool I usually use is Google!

  • My current approach to online research is too dispersive, and kills a lot of time. I would hope to have an opposite approach to what I had before I started this course.

  • I love doing research, though most of the time I lose the main point and get distracted, so in this weeks I would like to improve my research to be more straight to the point.

  • I can understand better how robot are impacting the world of health care in a positive way and can see some new working places coming out from the development of robots.

  • It is a medium low level of autonomy, information is exchanged by the help of am x-ray or ultrasound medical imaging machine.

The structure is based on a tele operation and focus of attention.

The shaping of tasks for human-robot collaboration In this type of research are related to the high risks posed by the activity, the design should be less...

  • - they talked about how they were invented and their development course;
    - it has made me think about the revolution and rapid evolution technology is having at the moment;
    -they have worked well on describing the first two steps they lacked a bit in the answer to the human-interaction question;
    - I would cite the website or file I took this information from.

  • The ingestible origami robot evolved through time by becoming less invasive, and more efficient, it developed to counter the numbers of people poisoned by the ingestion of batteries.

It is by-dimensional, biodegradable, and biocompatible robot which is encapsulated In ice capsules.

They are controlled by an electromagnetic actuation system which permits...

  • It certainly raises my level of knowledge on this topic, but I think devices should be though not only considering the patient but also the health care provider. As both should be comfortable to limit more the level of danger those devices can cause.

  • They are tested following a rigorous set of exams, and trying every time to improve the devices limiting the possible risks.

I think medical devices should be tested more rigorously than other type of tools because of their importance and the risks they could pose on a patient's health.

  • What lessons are there to be learned from this operation?
That when treating patients in difficult surgical operations, the best is to know what you are doing, and ensure that you have a close to perfect knowledge of your tools as a doctor.

What steps would you take to avoid a repeat of this situation in the future?
The health care national system should...

  • What do you think about these challenges? They are well posed, they all tend to depend on the patient's necessities, though they differ as the level of the issue is more relevant when disabling the patient or affecting the patient's health can differ in a vast number of occasions while in the first case could even just be temporary.

  • The designers should always keep in mind that utility, and comfort come before aesthetics.

  • The most important feature for me is the nature of information exchange, because without a specific medium, and format the communication cannot go further. Because without a specific input and the means to translate the message the communication lacks of an answer.

  • By surfing on the net I come across data set by algorithms which are coming directly from an artificial intelligence. The physical interaction is based on the necessity of working closely to it while cognitively it is a sort of anticipation.
Sometimes it is boring because it presents you always with the same content though it often saves me time.

  • I think that to behave like a human there is a lot of progress to be made, though like human is more probable, and will take less time. The impact it would have is a shock at first and a laugh or an immediate closure.

  • A robot will impact the health care system by making it more organised and cleaner, though it could sense, and record every conversation or action making the information more accessible.
The robot will increase the quality, and rate of success of treatments involving surgery, or even physiotherapy. The major issue will be the increment in the taxes debts...

  • I think Robots should be used in healthcare but not involving social contact, while they are more helpful when deployed for technical assistance procedures.

  • I have already done a course on MedTech: Exploring the Human Genome, and I love the way the University of Leeds structures their online courses.
Hello here is Lorenzo, I am passionate about biology, and new technological innovations.

  • Thank you a beautiful course!

  • I think that personalised health care should be always assisted by a family doctor, and the genomic research and health care innovations should sponsored by the governments taxes as it consist in a public service. The accessibility should be afforded by increasing the numbers, and salaries of
family doctors present in the different regions. The family...

  • Gene Transfer technologies have been impacted and evolved through this three important developments, gene targeting and nuclear transfer or animal cloning. These technological innovations have enhanced our ability to analyze gene function at the level of the whole organism and have provided the means to modify gene expression. They are applied nowadays to...

  • As DNA sequencing technology becomes more accessible, affordable and portable, do you think it should be available for everyone to use? Or should it be kept in the hands of healthcare professionals?

DNA sequencing is the demonstration of how health care technologies are developing to help patients to be more independent but still I think DNA sequencing...

  • - Health care necessity to be more organised, and have a better timing.

  • The assignment suited with what with done since now on the course.
Yes they changed especially in providing more evidence after reading a report by another student. Not yet, though I would love if there were!

  • Gene therapy is what I have chosen to discuss of : The objective of gene therapy is to treat a disease by introducing new genes into cells to add or restore gene expression. Often, a defective gene is replaced with DNA encoding a functional version. In some cases, gene encoding a therapeutic protein drug may be delivered into cells. People who will benefit...

  • Yes, having the possibility rather than the ability to sequence my genome it has a positive impact on the prevention and control in the interception of rare ilnesses.

Self-diagnosis's problems might be incorrect evaluations of the results, and unnecessary treatments, increasing also the psychological stress.

  • In the video the most surprising sentence was about the possibility of being passionate about Biology but being a complete illiterate, and still being capable to work as a bioinformatician.
The benefits would be high regarding the costs, the quality of the technological advancements, and the know-how of the clinicians.

  • An assistance consultant which helps in case of doubt through the use of examination checks, an instructor and a technological medical assistant which helps in case there is malfunction with the machines.

  • I think health care professionals need to be called individually to inform and understand the new methods of working through the latest innovations.
Health care professionals could be helped by being sponsored to become better and more professionals workers.

  • The services the NHS offers in genetics are:
    Clinical genetics services – where doctors and genetic counsellors diagnose genetic conditions and/or assess the risk a patient will inherit or develop a genetic condition;

Laboratory genetics services – where scientists undertake a range of genetic and blood tests. Tissue and samples are referred to the...
