Such lovely pieces, they made me move a lot. I found the faster ones like the Deadmau5 made me move only my head but the ones listed above made me dance with my whole body. I think a personal connection with a song makes a big difference in how we perceive and how we react to it with our bodies. A...

  • I have a similar experience to you Agnieszka! I used to play classical music most of my life (flute) and now I play in a salsa band (also in London). The reaction of the audience is so different in each of those contexts and it is something I am still getting used to since playing in the salsa band is a new thing for me. Because playing salsa involves usually...

  • Hi! I am a classically trained flautist, but in love with Afro-Cuban and Latin-Jazz music, and I am also a salsa dancer. I would love to learn more about the correlation between music and movement.

  • Hi! In C major ( CDEFGABC) VI chord is A minor so A C E (you start on the 6th degree of the scale A and then go two steps up - C and again- E). There are also two other minor chords in C major, chord II (D minor - D F A) and chord III (E-minor). In a previous step, Martin played the song in D major so all the chords are transferred a whole step (whole tone) up...

  • It goes down a fifth rather than up, so from C you go down to F then B, E, A, D, G and back to C. It helps if you have a keyboard in front of you :)

  • Listened randomly to one of the tracks on the list and fell in love with it - All The Things You Are. So beautiful!

  • Thank you so much for the course! It has given me lots of things to reflect on. And thank you, Jared, for engaging in discussions and raising valid points! Hope to cross paths one day in London!

  • Thanks Jared, that's a very fair point! I'll think about it!

  • Most of traditional Cuban dance music is based on question and answer system, it can be present within one voice or typically in some sections of the songs it is a dialogue of the main singer and the responding vocal voices (call and response = choro - pregon). Sometimes it can be a dialogue of a singer and soloing instruments.
An example by the great Buena...

  • @GrahamKlyne Hi! Maybe you have already got to know this but G# in A minor is super common. It is a crucial note in a so-called harmonic minor (A B C D E F G# A) where G# is the leading note of the scale and together with notes E and B forms the dominant chord E major (the tonic chord is A minor). G# is also a part of the ascending version of so-called melodic...

  • I'm sure improvisation does help my classical playing even though I don't have a clear answer to that. I think the fact that I have been improvising and most of the times following the lead sheets, definitely helps me to memorise classical pieces easier as I am able to identify each musical ideas faster, understand harmony changes and remember the...

  • That is a good question! Thank you for raising it. I usually try to pick a piece and then figure out the harmony there and play it on the piano in different keys to get my ears used to the most common progressions from the piece. When I hear a new song I would try to listen if any of the progressions I have gone through before are there. But it's never been a...

  • Thanks Jared! I know it is not a well-known fact but Cuban music and flute improvisation in the typical charanga bands are an incredible phenomenon! Traditionally the impro was based on a very classical melodic material, played really high in register (on recordings even too high), and layered on top of Latin-percussion, vocals, piano, violins and bass, which...

  • I would like to be a bandleader one day when I set up my own band, but at the moment I know I still need to get enough confidence and knowledge, and enhance my leadership skills.
My role as a flautist in a Latin-jazz band I am in now is just to do my job right, prepare as much as I can (thats what I set to myself) and give humble feedback to my co-members,...

  • You've lost the love feelin', Both Sides Now and Girl from Ipanema are my favourites!

  • Thank you Jared for the ideas!

  • Such great and educational videos! Thank you!
I have engaged with improvisation during my flute studies while playing baroque pieces. Later on, I have discovered 'contemporary' improvisation, some jazz and Afro-Cuban and I have only started doing it properly when I joined a salsa band a year ago. As flute is a very traditional instrument in Cuban dance music...

  • I'd love to improve my harmony awareness. It is such an important thing for a good classical or jazz improvisation. I sometimes get lost while improvising because I would forget the chord progression and then in order to carry on I would just have to rely on my melodic and harmonic instinct. It takes time for my ears to detect the chords and while improvising...

  • I really like the idea of practising scales or arpeggios and at the same time playing them musically and improvising around them. I find myself often practising the scales without any real reference to the potential melody I could improvise, so this is a great tip.
I always divide my practise between classical flute practice usually in the morning, focusing...

  • I have connected with other musicians through orchestral, ensemble or choral projects I took part in during my music school years and studying flute at a conservatoire. It wasn't a problem at all to find people to play with. After moving out of my country and relocating to the UK it has been really hard to get to know local musicians and play with them. After...

  • Hi. Perhaps making a post on a local facebook group and specifying the musical styles you would like to play with others, would bring some interesting responses?

  • I really love it! thank you for sharing!

  • @JaredMichaud Thank you Jared!

  • I am just looking for ideas to be a better music partner for the people I play with. I also want to be someone who can contribute to the music played sharing some valuable insights, without any barriers or fears.

  • Hi everyone! I'm Kasia (or Katherine - English alternative), I live in London and I have been playing the flute for years and eventually completed my masters in Flute 4 years ago. I also play the piano and I've been dedicating lots of my time lately to get better at it. I love classical and jazz music but I am also fascinated by the whole Afro-Cuban and Latin...

  • Hi everyone! I am Katherine and I am a classically trained flute player. I love Afro-Cuban music, but also jazz, soul, gospel to name a few (and obviously classical). I am hoping to get an idea from this course on how to push my music skills forward by writing my music :)

  • Hello everyone! I'm from London and I have been teaching flute for 6 years and piano for a year. I would love to learn more about practical ways to motivate my students to practise, keep them engaged during lessons and help them achieve the best results through their most effective practise time and well-structered lessons I deliver.
