  • NYC is a good example of gentrification, where artists and musicians have left their hallowed areas like Greenwich Village. Whole nationality and cultural groups have departed Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn and Queens. However, popular movements have saved it from the developers sometimes. Having witnessed Penn station demolished, Grand Central became the...

  • The key to tourism is respect. By the tourists to the locals. The revenue introduced, at its best, leads to job growth, urban/rural regeneration and bonds different cultures more closely (one world). The revenue can be used to preserve and protect fragile, popular sites (and sights!). All in all, a very good thing.

  • The price of art is like any other commodity. It is set by what the market/buyer will pay.
People will always pay for pleasure and or profit. What would Cezanne et al think of the prices their art now fetches.

  • Radically change the European idealogy of Junker and Tusk, Merkel and Macron and adopt a policy of listening to the people of Europe and accept their wishes. The current patronising and hierarchical approach is tearing Europe apart.

  • The article is a total misrepresentation of the reasons for the UK Brexit vote. Certainly many older “whites” wished for a return to earlier days, however many middle class citizens are passionate in their longing to remain in the EU. However, the biggest mistake is not acknowledging that the strongest support for Brexit did indeed come from the low-waged,...

  • I am from Manchester. I have taught many Western and Eastern European students. The one defining link between them all is their tolerance for each other and their love of humanity in a free society.

  • Terrific series, wonderfully acted by two tremendous actors. Each episode filled with evocative intensity which pervaded the complex and mysterious plot until its final terrifying denouement.

  • The human, moral and political mood of the day pervaded the long-standing traditional custom.

  • So much to digest and analyse thus week in so many derailed stories and accounts.

  • Tony Maguire made a comment

The construction and workings of the different types of committees and their different modus operandi in the two Houses.

  • The two systems dovetail to provide comprehensive, insightful and far reaching investigations, and consequently reports, into every aspect of government activities from a wide range of direct and indirect sources to produce recommendations to existing situations upon which the government may take action.

  • Q Why has national house building of family homes almost ground to a halt?
SQ Dos he government see the value of social housing in this day and age and if so what progress can we expect in this matter? .If not, why not?

  • I enjoy the to and fro and the banter in PMQs. It is live theatre and pervading the noisy scenes are important questions and on the spot responses. It is a good opportunity to watch, listen to and analyse the styles, personalities and abilities of the two main Party leaders. A great tradition.

  • I have learned of the vast diversity in its culture, the emergence of AAs in this culture and their migration to the North to escape the constraints of racism and violence in the South.

  • The political disagreements between North and South.
The disintegration of the "old order" in the South, followed by disillusionment for the AAs that the "new order" offered no new hope of social acceptance & development.
The need for more labour in northern cities caused by WW1.

  • They would be a fleeting moment in history as the old white supremacy once more took over their everyday lives.

  • The House of Lords sections are the most interesting as the House is rarely shown in an insightful or positive manner, if at all, on national television.

  • It is not particularly the role of the House of Lords which is contentious but rather the age component and the predominance of males which could be questioned.

  • In theory the House of Lords is a good part of our democracy. In practice, the election to it of former MPs is questionable as is the commitment to it of some members of the House of Lords in relation to their activities, attendance and expenses.

  • It is a shame that the turn-out in General Elections is so low. I would ensure school children are taught lessons on UK democracy from an early age to encourage their commitment to it.

  • I reconfirm my original response.

  • Debate, legislation and democracy.

  • A really fascinating insight into the Southern states of that era.

  • Tony Maguire made a comment

The preservation of the status quo with its wealth and power was the overriding raison d'être which prevailed. Accordingly, everything which contributed to this, slaves and crop yields had to be preserved. Thus, this way of life was defended by forming the Confederate Government and in turn fighting the war.

  • Primarily, The Civil War, Slavery, KKK, music, food, NFL, Mardi Gras.
My son was invited to spend a year at Charleston Southern University after graduating from Birmingham (England). We visited and toured Charleston, Savannah, Florida, the Pan Handle amongst many places.
    Memorable!

Antipasto Primo Secondo Contorno Dolce Frutta Caffè Amoro

  • I have always, wanted to find out more about the involvement of Britain in the Middlel East.

  • A very worthwhile course.

  • The UK has a democratically elected government which serves a fixed term. Major decisions as agreed under parliament are effected. This is the "lower" house (commons) and these are passed to the "upper" house (lords) for approval. There is now a sub-strata of devolved government carried out by Scotland and Wales and to an extent Northern Ireland. There is also...

  • An impersonal hands-off approach which may not have the desired effect. Certainly the budget cuts may be seen as necessary, but without an agreed plan of implementation and monitoring in place, this approach may lead to friction and bad decisions being made on Mars.

  • The reviewer quite clearly did not like my essay.

  • Taxation should have a broad base and be directed to achieve a good balance between the needs of the authority (the government) and those of the individual. It should ensure public services used by all are provided effectively and efficiently and at the same time individual taxation is levied fairly whilst providing incentives to achieve success and achieve...

  • Follow Adam Smith's principles, widen the tax base, customise taxes to be appropriate to each countrey's circumstances, develop an efficient tax collection system and eliminate inefficiency and fraud.

  • I would cut overseas aid, government expenses, welfare benefits, fraud & inefficiency.
I would also increase taxation by 1%.

  • The Greek authorities have been trying to balance two irreconcilable parties, their creditors and their population, both desiring a different outcome. Hence the crisis is perpetuated.

  • The main consideration is whether the project is actually financially viable. Secondly, the need to match current expenditure against current revenues. Thirdly, examine ways of increasing revenue and reducing costs. Fourthly, investigate ways of increasing revenues which can be sustained long term.

  • P1 Animals from factory farming spend their entire lives in miserable conditions until the day they are slaughtered.
P2 Animals from factory farming are treated cruelly.
P3 chickens get their beaks cut off with a burning hot blade and with no painkillers
P4 Commercial fishing is destroying and emptying our oceans
    Therefore, I believe
    Everyone should...

  • Relativism - "the doctrine that knowledge, truth and morality exist in relation to culture, society or historical context, and are not absolute".
I find myself agreeing with this in some cicumstances e.g. I can understand why the Catholic Church is against birth control, but I disagree as a matter of personal choice.
However, I am against the beliefs of...

  • The law is clear and personal interpretations "interfere" with that law. Precedent, higher authority and consistency are the important factors. However, sometimes laws become outdated in the context of social evolution, so an open mind to challenge and change the law should always be a viable consideration.

  • I have enjoyed the course both in style and context and hope very much it will be part of a series of similar courses in the future.

  • Images supported by text provide the best of both worlds. The factual (hopefully) presentation of facts complemented by video/still images which allow the reader to interpret and empathise with the message satisfactorily and pleasurably.

  • The letter is a request for compensation for the personal costs of the expedition and reward and recognition for the huge achievement in settling the land for the Spanish King.
Alvarado has to be very humble yet clear in writing this letter. Any real mention of the part played by his partnership with the natives would not be in his personal financial interesrs.

  • I would like minority languages to survive and be passed on to future generations but both parents and teachers alike. Similarly, local dialects around the same country. Young children are very adept at communicating with one another on many languages so it is not impossible for this to take place and with it the accompanying local history and culture. A sense...

  • The white veil contrasts with the stereotype of the black veil and can be seen as undermining this image by contrasting purity with darker forces.

  • Scientific Explanation
P1 Until the late 1970s left handedness was actively discouraged in schools
P2 The wider community made few concessions to left handed people
P3 Many left handed peopled switched to using their right hand

  • Danil, I have nothing at all against the Russians. If you put people from all over the world in a room together, they will invariably get on. For their own personal reasons, political leaders/dictators have their own agenda. Sometimes for good, whilst sometimes for bad reasons, be they Western, Eastern or Oriental.
I shall maintain my dislike of Putin and...

  • Crimea, Ukraine, Nemtsov, Chechnya..

  • I too have visited the USS Arizona monument in Pearl Harbo(u)r on Ohau Island Hawaii. It is a striking visual monument to the sailors on board the ship. The oil indeed leaks continually to the surface.

  • We need look no further than present day Russia and the deeds of Putin. He, like Peter, loves the limelight, represents himself in true macho masculine mode. The all conquering, threatening autocrat who removes swiftly and divisively the slightest obstacle to his megalomaniac obsessions.
Then we could consider the ultimate modern dictator Kim Jung Un.....

  • It dies not seem very French to me. It does represent a link between France and Egypt but its significance may be lost on the current (and previous) generation(s)?

  • I consider Robert Musil very cynical and detached from humanity in his beliefs. Monuments represent achievements, milestones or infamous events. It is behovent of each generation to explain both their historical significance and their present day relevance to the next generation. "Lest we forget...."

  • Thanks, Sally.

  • P1 Last time we parked on this street we got towed
P2 We don't want to get towed again
    Therefore
C We should park on another sreet
It's a weak non-deductive argument (e.g. it seems) which makes the conclusion weak because it does not provide good premises that they will be towed again. The counter arguments are there could be several reasons they were...

  • iPhones are unnecessary for a job, you could have a Samsung or no phone at all if not specified in the job description. You may be a technophobe but are still a workaholic. You may want a job to be able to afford your daily costs.

  • Yes, heresy well down my list as almost least serious.
No plans yet from the neighbours.
    Just a pet rabbit!

  • They do not have one, so no problem there!

  • Putting me on the spot, Sarah. My ranking would be as follows (from 9 down to 1) worst to least.
    9. Treachery 8. Violence 7. Fraud 6. Anger 5. Greed 4. Gluttony 3. Lust 2. Heresy 1. Limbo
    Dante's
    9. Treachery 8. Fraud 7. Violence 6. Heresy 5. Anger 4. Greed 3. Gluttony 2. Lust 1. Limbo
Not a great deal of difference for me. Heresy is the most significant.

  • Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses.

  • The ranking of sins by Dante mirrors aspects of Christianity and its values through the ages. It is unrepresentative of our modern values and should be judged and appreciated in the context of its time.

  • The preface sets the tone of the book in a very unequivocal manner. It is a strong and passionate message which challenges the reader to take on board the principles of Hugo's sense and feel for socialism.

  • It is easy to see how his character is portrayed in the film. Dark, sinister and with supporting menacing body language. The director clearly does not want him to be admired and his characteristics are complemented by the appropriate, evocative music.

  • Yes, indeed. I omitted the final line of this Aristotelian syllogism, which is "(Therefore Geirge is an Irishman) - True or False?"
    The answer is obvious.
Just a slight twist on the discussion challenge.

  • P1 George eats potatoes
    P2 Irishmen eat potatoes
    Therefore
    C1 George is an Irishman

  • "Imagine all the people.....and the world will be as one"
    John Lennon "Imagine"
    So true!

  • Buddhists do not know everything.

  • If only human nature was not so inherently greedy, then rising against the ruling class would not be so imperative. A fair wage for a fair day's pay does not apply to all businesses. The Communist Manifesto is a wish list which human nature has always defeated.

  • During the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia.
It is a battle cry of the oppressed against the forces of oppression.

  • Whilst we live in this country in a more enlightened age as far as mental health issues are concerned, nevertheless real problems and issues remain. The relaxation of controls or even the release of patients back into society, albeit with some form of monitoring for some, has led to several physical attacks and even murders. Inquiries are held to determine...

  • I agree with Heather who presents a very reasoned argument in support of the letter being (at least to some extent, in my opinion) an argument.
P1 The coincidence is legally obliged to protect 80 year old trees.
P2 The trees in question are 80 years old.
P3 (Cutting down trees is not protecting them)
P4 (The council should uphold the law)

  • We do not know there were both smiling and non-smiling people, in the sample given. Equally, it is wrong to assume John only smiled at smiling people, particularly when the statement says John smiled at everybody!
This seems a flawed example, does it not?

  • I understand the well worn argument that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, but as we seem to see increasingly more these days, it can also be yet another enemy. The current situation in Syria is a case in point.

  • They changed their mind due to the new "evidence" whose authenticity they were biased to give credence to.

  • Hello, I am Tony. I am a retiree after a career as a senior Retail Manager and latterly as a lecturer in a College Business School. I am greatly interested in the subject matter of this course.

  • I eat a very balanced diet with occasional "feel-good" treats. I exercise considerably. I shall continue to try and increase wholemeal products and to minimise processed foods.

  • Careful guidelines needed.

  • I never diet. I eat a healthy well-balanced diet with occasional treats and lots of exercise.

  • I eat meat/fish with most meals but my weekly diet also contains most fruits and veg available in the supermarket along with a healthy whole grain breakfast, goats milk and plenty of intense exercise.

  • Tony Maguire made a comment

Smoked salmon, mackerel two/three times weekly.

  • Firm government guidelines from education to food manufacturing should be enforced. If people cannot help themselves then enforcement must be applied to protect the health of the country and particularly the children. Cooking skills must be a high practical agenda throughout children's' education and beyond.

  • I love most types of foods, from savouries to desserts. I eat very healthily with a good balanced diet and control my insatiable appetite very carefully. However, bacon and dark chocolates I find irresistible!

  • Obesity is due to poor education on food related issues. Lack of awareness, pressures of modern society, inadequate government control and lip service paid by the food industry are all contributory factors,

  • Feel-good, healthy, energetic, quality.

  • I enjoyed the task and I am sure I feel the same as many others when I say the difficulty was reducing the amount of material available into the word count constraints required.
I wish to thank Rachelle for her positive review and her very kind words.
    Thank you Rachelle.

URFA adopted this format at the behest of the egocentric Platini who wished to project his own self-image. Whilst it can be a good idea for a group of smaller countries sharing borders to host a competition, this new format will not be well received by loyal fans who wish to follow their country through the competition.

  • A transparent and democratic governance by both FIFA and EUFA is an immediate priority together with the bidding system for their two major trophies and the removal of "jollies" for their officials.
FFP has virtually collapsed with the recent lifting of restrictions. The whole question of money in football, wages, TV money and rights and its distribution...

  • I do wonder why a politician would actually need convincing. They do not of course, but to coerce them into action is the issue. It needs to appeal to their self-interests and for political gains to be achievable as a result.

  • Manchester United Foundation works in some of the most disadvantaged areas across Greater Manchester and uses the passion for the club to engage, inspire and unite young people. It delivers football coaching, educational programmes and personal development which provides young people with opportunities to change their lives for the better. It aims to engage...

  • I gave enjoyed immensely the two courses about Korea which complement each other completely. My knowledge about the two Koreas was quite superficial but now I feel illuminated and very keen to gain a deeper and more far reaching insight into both countries.
    Two tremendous courses.

  • A wonderful success story in South Korea. We should not forget the building disasters, the IMF bailout and, as in many advanced economies, the poor people who are still too numerous.
South Korea should be congratulated on its economic efficiency and effectiveness such as establishing FTA's with many countries, its unique ability to cooperate with nations...

  • The trend of cultural globalisation has to be welcomed, appreciated and pursued. It is a wonderful phenomenon and a sure way of bringing people and nations together in much the same way as sport has striven to do.

  • My comments were directed at the subject matter concerned. We were not invited to pass judgement on the U.S. President, nor any other world leader, for that matter.
Your assertion that the same is true of "every leader of every country in the world" is false and a weak attempt in defence of the North Korean pair.

  • A partial success. The football and the media coverage were both exciting and informative.
For the people of Brazil, many difficult issues. The disruption to personal lives before and during the World Cup, the horrendous cost of staging the event and the disappointment of its legacy in terms of the quality of life improvements for the average person.

  • The media coverage, nationalism, exciting matches, skilful play have all contributed to a huge upswing in interest and participation in women's football. Many male sporting celebrities have also given good support and encouragement.
Ironically, SKY's Sunday Supplement programme regularly features journalists decrying the fact there are too few black managers...

  • Top level, experienced, well qualified coaches play a very important part in successful teams.
This is illustrated well by Germany and Spain.
Tradition is always an important aspect as in the case of Italy, Brazil, Argentina and Germany.
Passion, tradition and support have all played their part in the success of USA's women's team.

  • Perhaps we now consider that the threat is not a considerable one, but nevertheless, whilst the country is led by such a seemingly unstable person, it is difficult to see how more co-operative relations can be achieved with the regime.

  • A harsh, ideological regime with little, if any, care or compassion for its citizens.
The despotic nature of its hierarchical system did not permit itself to plan and build a fair and just society, with the resultant dire consequences.

  • Footballing rivalry is the Manchester derby. Each club has enjoyed periods of "bragging rights" throughout history,
Footballing nation is England with a long and proud history since the inception of the professional game.

  • As a lifetime Man United supporter it has always been a welcome bond to meet and feel comfortable & a sense of fraternity with all manner of people throughout the many towns & cities in which I have lived in the UK. This also is graphically illustrated in the Red Lion bar on Bleeker St NYC, where many diverse United supporters meet to watch United play on TV...

  • Well, they do not! The more popular club by a long, long way is United!
Try walking along Market St in Manchester and peer into the City gift shop. The only people you will see inside are the staff!
It us not for nothing City's ground is known locally as "The Emptihad"!
