  • I think the differentiating factors between everyday emotional distress and depression and anxiety is the longevity of the feelings as well as the intensity. By this I mean if you are feeling sad or worrisome for a prolonged period of time, say maybe like 2 days or more and the feelings do not let up eventually and are a common occurrence that feel paralyzing...

  • His physical health has probably led to him not living a full life. He's not around people most of the time and maybe that makes him feel isolated and alone. This greatly affects anyone's mental health. I think it would be helpful if he made more of an effort to be around genuine company. Friends and family he's close to and with whom he'll be free to discuss...

  • Hi guys. I'm Sharon Cherotich from Kenya. I have recently been overcome by an overwhelming number of loved ones who's personal struggles have come to light and I just want to have more knowledge and information as well as how best to support them in their struggles.

  • The CV is quite shallow. It just states facts but there's no substantial take away from it. The email address looks unprofessional and the CV is likely to not be taken seriously. Dates of work experience haven't been given. The CV looks like its missing vital information and is not very consistent.

  • I'm excited for this week!

  • Information Officer - Hopps and Hooper Sports Centre

    Communication skills
    Organisation skills
    Marketing and PR skills
    Interpersonal skills
    Multi-tasking

  • Hey, I'm Sharon from Kenya. I have a degree in economics but I have not gained any practical experience yet. I believe the reason for my misfortune probably lies in my application process and my CV. I joined this course in the hope of getting some guidance on the whole process and I am also hoping that along the way I may get to learn more about my strengths...

  • @SethYamoah yeah, but donations are not a very sustainable way to sustain our projects. I found it hard to rely on donations. I hope you get all the support you require and keep up the good work.

  • @FokansinSodayoMebawondu true. Unfortunately though not a lot of time and effort is put into evaluating the viability of policies during those times. But it is a great opportunity for policymakers to put forward their action plans.

  • @GedoniEni Yes, very true

  • I am glad I took up this course. It has been very insightful and inspirational and for that I am grateful to the team.

  • Carry out extensive research and interviews to create a compelling argument to sway the view of the stakeholders so that I am able to engage them and hopefully count on their influence. Create a timeline in which I specify what I should achieve at what time and by what time. Continue to make donations in the meantime before incorporating more sustainable plans.

  • I think its important because it mentally prepares you for the task ahead. You are able to be honest with yourself and in the midst of the honesty a clear path is established as well as a new resolve that makes you sure of what you want. You become confident in your action plan and hence you are able to defend it and vouch for it wholeheartedly.

  • Creating a consensus among stakeholders and laying out a timescale are definitely very important.

  • The policy is becoming clearer and its becoming easier to make a presentation on the same to anyone who's ready to listen.

  • My passion is to restore the dignity of women and empower them. The policy I have in mind is to promote menstrual hygiene in education and promote easy access to sanitary supplies either through subsidies or direct donations to those unable to get access either due to lack of resources or inaccessibility.
There are plenty of documentaries done on the matter...

  • Very well put. Thank you!

  • Rebecca did not let any complexities in the course of her path deter he from her pursuit of achieving her action plan. She always found a way around it. Despite not having adequate resources she managed to optimize with whatever she had.
Accepting and taking in help when you need to. She got the community to convince their representative to avail themselves...

  • It is true. Sometimes you feel as though you are a tiny fish in a gigantic pond and it seems as though what you want to put out into the world would not matter. But it should and it does.

  • There were all these stakeholders with different ideas and they all wanted to see their ideas being included. Jayathma had to find a way to accomodate everyone's idea which could have been the addition of a word in the policy. In the more diplomatic meetings where she felt she wasn't really understanding discussions she followed up after by asking the specific...

  • It is all very insightful. Power is fluid and people always love being associated with the winning side. Also gossip is important aside from it being entertaining, who knew!

  • @TaniaPozos hopefully we'll have developed ways to deal with this problem and many others

  • @UGOCHUKWUAMADI key is to identify the right opportunities I guess

  • @ChimnonsoOnyekwelu thank you. I hope the passion and determination will make the ideas we have a reality.

  • @JosiahHolo Very true

  • Thank you Emily. All in good time I hope

  • Recently I had gone for fieldwork with a colleague of mine and we had a meeting with the hosts on the other side. There were some issues discussed in the meeting that my colleague and I were not entirely on the same page. I explained from my own understanding and tried breaking it down for him to understanding but he was very adamant with his own thoughts and...

  • In times of elections, Kenyan elections. Despite proclaiming our independence in thoughts and actions winners of elections in Kenya are ultimately determined by which ethnic communities they belong to. If the majority of your ethnic community is voting for leader A then you are more inclined to vote for leader A.

  • My main stakeholders are those that are not engaged but are influential.

  • I have always had the need to be something more. I have always wanted to create something that made an impact on someone. When I was in high school I started visiting children homes and I got to see what life was like for some of the people living in my country. I could not understand why the government was boasting of growing economically yet more than half...

  • The conviction with which she answers that question. It shows the passion behind and gives the recipient of that answer confidence in her plans.

  • I would think the greatest chance of being able to have influence would be when there's a crisis. In times of crisis tensions are high and people are usually desperate for solutions and if your policy happens to align with the crisis at hand then it is most likely to be considered and implemented. Taking it back to the case study of Franklin Roosevelt during...

  • All the tactics given above are very important and they complement each other. However, I think the important is identifying the stakeholders. Seeing as it would be the first step logically, if it is skipped then one can easily lose stray away from the path. Without identifying the stakeholders one is at a danger of building their policy on the wrong...

  • The biggest challenge at the time was most probably the lack of information. There were all these misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS and these in turn made them react by isolating and stigmatizing those affected by the virus. Another challenge was the prime minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, was not won over by the argument thus slowing down his...

  • The last point where he says we must be prepared to change our policy suggestions in line with the evidence. Sometimes we as a people driven by our different passions get caught up in the high and the excitement of creating policies that are in support of these passion that we do not take into consideration of the evidence deterring us from going forward with...

  • The most valuable approach for me would be observation. My work focuses on empowering women by restoring their dignity and promoting menstrual health. The impact of it are easily observable and conclusions can be drawn from it. However, having gone through the article above I think it would be appropriate to include an element of experimentation into it just...

  • You have a very well thought-out plan, very informative and realistic. I would be happy to see your plans come to life. It would mean a lot for our country.

  • I would need a mix of both qualitative and quantitative evidence although I think I would need to use more of the qualitative than quantitative. My reason for this is because for me to be able to get the traction and support I would require to push for my policy I would need to be very moving. And when the stakeholders are already emotionally inclined I would...

  • 'Only fear is fear itself'. I really like that quote. It speaks volumes.

  • From the three case studies what I found most surprising is that even with the best intentions in mind, the results an action are not always the best. For instance, in the toad case study which were brought in to control pests ended up bringing more problems. In the FDR case study, he wanted to put an end to the great depression but not all the ideas he...

  • I think step 3 has the greatest capacity to influence development of policy. At this stage you have already identified a problem and formulated ways you think would be a good solution. You have also carried out a survey and taken into consideration the different perspectives on the matter and are therefore able to come up with a middle ground. In step 3, all...

  • That is very true. And if we only rely on the passion without regard for what is needed then it doesn't really serve a purpose.

  • Passion is a strong motivator but not everyone shares my passion as we are all different and we want different things. Evidence is important as it persuades those that do not share the same passion as I do understand the need for the change by evaluating data. In a presentation to policymakers it is important to always link the two. That in the delivery of...

  • Does inaccessibility to sanitary supplies and lack of knowledge on the matter affect the success of women in the society?
Subsidy of sanitary supplies and menstrual education will lead to more women being more empowered.
If the hypothesis is true then we would have more girls finishing school who are confident and unashamed of themselves who grow up to be...

  • Of importance I think it is also good to use data that is easily understood and can be related to so that it serves a larger group of people and is not only limited to people with the knowledge and expertise in those areas.

  • I found the second reason to be the one that is most simplistic and covers all the areas we would consider when making policies. Giving the story only goes so far but getting data to support these stories makes it so much more influential and persuasive to all the stakeholders involved. In application of the quantitative aspect I also think its important for...

  • This first week really got me thinking about areas and aspects that I hadn't even considered before. I am really looking forward to learning more as the course progresses.

  • My passion is to empower the girl child by sharing knowledge on menstrual hygiene and providing easy and affordable access to sanitary supplies. As at now the best possible solution would be organizing donation drives and delivering the donations to need schools and areas with limited access. However, that would only solve a short-term problem and the...

  • @RichardHill your distinction is simpler and easier to understand so thank you for that.

  • The objective of all their passions are to create a better world in the different sectors they are into.

  • That there could be a bottom-up approach in policy formulation, that is, from the community to the legislators who eventually pass the bills. It seems to be a bit unrealistic to me as it is too wide a pool to involve in the formulation process. This is not to mean that I do not support including the entire community in the process. I just mean that people are...

  • The community can collectively band together to formulate policies which would be an ideal situation. However, realistically speaking policies are most likely to be formulated by politicians and other people in power.

  • @farahbrahmi Same issue in my country. You spend years studying only for you to graduate and hunt for a job far much longer. Most people don't even end up in their area of specialisation.

  • I agree with you completely. Corruption inhibits a lot of progress. It needs to be kept in check and policies formulated to deal with it.

  • Education is obviously a critical factor but I think the more pressing issue is poverty and economic inequality. I think this is critical because inaccessibility to education may be as a result of parents and/or guardians being unable to pay for their children's school fees as a result of them being poor. If we work together to formulate policies and...

  • I agree with the second definition but i think the first definition is clearer and more accurate. Policies are indeed made to achieve results. They are the steps taken to meet set out objectives and results. In all this time is a very critical factor.

  • I can relate. Thats the same thing that happens in my country.

  • There have been so many and there are still so many more people who have stood up for something and have started something that continues to change lives. For me it is the first lady of my country, Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta who launched a campaign called 'Beyond Zero' who's purpose is to promote safe delivery for women in labour, to minimize deaths during child...

  • Self-interest most of the time. Its sad but I feel like people nowadays are so in tune with doing what is best for them that we do not stop to see how our actions and decisions affect others, the government included.

  • Finding the right platforms is definitely a problem. Not as easy to find them as one would think. Also, finding the right fit.

  • I feel confident enough about my passion. It is realistic and it's something I really enjoy doing. Thinking of the positive impact and the possibility of changing someone's life brings me so much joy. For me my biggest constraint has been resources. I cannot depend on donations to keep up projects. Also, finding the right platforms to share my cause and...

  • Honestly for me step one is something I would need to work on the most. Overcoming it would maybe require some consultation from people with more experience to sort of shed light on some of the strategies I can apply to work through it and make it a success. I just don't want to have a great idea and make it a one hit wonder, I want it to have a lasting effect...

  • I agree with you that passion is important but I don't think its enough. Its a great motivator but sometimes you might be passionate about something, you know what you want and you know how to go about it, but there are other factors at play such as limited resources to put your passion into motion.

  • My passion checks steps 2,3 and 4. It may not be what the world needs because there are some parts of the world where menstrual hygiene and access to sanitary pads is a non-issue but for my community its critical. It is what my society needs and will address an existing problem. What i want to do is crystal clear for me as well as my abilities and approaches I...

  • My passion is giving back to the society by sharing information and resources that are limited and unavailable to others. I especially want to uplift women in my society by spreading information on menstrual hygiene and allowing them to have easy access to sanitary towels.

  • I have all these dreams and ideas about a perfect reality but I know we live in an imperfect world. However, I would like to create and inspire change. I would like to motivate others to promote change. At a time when economic growth is at its peak there's still so much lag in resource distribution. In certain areas of my country there are girls and women who...

  • Hey everyone, I'm Sharon. I recently graduated with a degree in economics but what I'm most passionate about is creating and running projects that empower the girl child through promoting menstrual hygiene and awareness as well as donating sanitary towels to those less fortunate. It is unfortunate that at this day and age access to these items and knowledge...
