I'm a doctoral student, studying Economics at the University of Abuja, with a bias in energy and petroleum economics. I look forward to have a great time in this course.

Location Abuja, Nigeria.

Activity

  • Political buy in was the most important strategy that was adopted. Getting a huge support from government, with collaboration from those that have knowledge and understanding of social enterprise and availability of data were the major strategies adopted.

  • Climate change, gender equality and disability and social finance.

  • The most pressing strategic need of women is protecting women from violence and rape.
Presently in Nigeria, there is a spike in gender based violence and rape prevalent in all regions of the country.

  • I agree with Lillian Mile's. Gender inequality can be reduced through laws and regulations and government intervention. Giving equal rights to gender can boost growth and development.
Gender equality awareness is top notch n my country except for a few places n the North where it has not been fully embraced.

  • My key learning point is knowing that there are businesses around the world that employ people with disability.
I will want to know if there are businesses in my country Nigeria that employ people with disability.
Create awareness on the importance of social enterprises.

  • I think the beat policy for my country Nigeria is the South Korean case study. It could help organisations hire more people with special needs.

It could have a positive impact on the economy. The main disadvantage is that the enforcement of such policies could be very slow and met with stiff resistance from business owners.

  • The disabled is actually able if given the right training.

  • The main challenge facing people with disability in Nigeria is harsh economic conditions where out of being stereotype, they are forced out of communities to live in clusters, without access to light, water, education and other basic amenities.

  • An eye opener for me is the role of business enterprises in climate change mitigation.

  • Social enterprises look for problem and come up with an innovative solution that adopts a very sustainable business model, sustainable way of actually making things work over time.
Also, they take advantage of meaningful partnerships, that is not just about combining technologies, but changing the nature of relationships, whether it’s between suppliers and...

  • The law and regulation and very little on behavioural nudges. The awareness campaigns are not making much impact because the outreach is very poor.
I envisage the use of taxation and incentives on carbon, meat and fuel taxes and spending investment but with the level of corruption and attitude of negligence by the government, I doubt if these will have a head...

  • The problems caused by climate change varies amongst countries, but this includes drought, desertification, loss of some species of animals, loss of glaciers, weather change, flooding etc
The ecosystem is affected therefore all humans and animals are affected.
If things remain unchanged, temperature and other problems caused by climate change will increase,...

  • Social enterprise Ghana is in a growing state with young leaders who anticipate growth and increase in capital.
The barriers to social enterprise growth in Ghana are capital flow, lack of access to grants, support and advisory services capital, shortages of technical skills and lack of awareness from banks and support organisations.
    Education and...

  • In Nigeria, government have played a crucial role in reducing external providers through the creation of the Nigerian content and development board (local content) especially in the oil industry.
In the public sector, tenders are advertised online and in newspapers and selection is according, though the process might not be without some corrupt practices.

  • Preferential procurement for social enterprise business may not be 100% possible but can be achieved with the right awareness.
With the level of corruption in my country it will be almost impossible to achieve this, but change begins with me. Proper awareness on social enterprise businesses can set the process in motion.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

Such a campaign can work in my context. Individuals and the government can drive it. Through jingles on various social platforms which could be sponsored by the government.

  • A registration is a good idea.
The registration scheme should be run by the government.
At least 60% should sign up in order to create a balance system.
    Funding should be private.

  • In my country, there are existing laws but these laws do not allow social enterprises to thrive. Therefore, amending the existing laws in favour of social enterprises can create a conducive business environment.

  • Spending programme are important because they have a direct impact (multiplier effect) on the economy. Though, government might not want to use this policy because it will place a burden on the budget.

Taxes are also important in discouraging consumption and investment on a particular restricted product. Tax can be used in increasing government revenue but...

  • Social enterprises and inclusive businesses is the nucleus of any society but in Nigeria, the presence of social enterprise have not created a sound impact in the economy due to government policies.

Social enterprise and inclusive business, with the help of good government policies can play an important role in achieving the SDG goals thereby eroding...

  • Her heart is made of gold. I was overwhelmed with the show of love. Giving back 100% of her capital to human capita capital development is indeed unimaginable.

  • These common challenges cannot be solved by the government alone. There is need for public/private partnership to provide solutions to ameliorate the problems.

  • I had a wonderful childhood experience growing up in my locality hunting butterflies and grasshoppers. Today, my nephews and nieces haven't seen butterflies and grasshoppers except on pictures. The extinction of these little beautiful creatures from our environment is as a result of climate change.
The problem of climate change brings to mind the fears for...

  • In my country Nigeria, we are not just facing the problems of unemployment but that of stagflation. That is, high level of unemployment coupled with high rates of inflation, with both running at the same pace.
The cost of unemployment is detrimental to any society. This includes high rates of criminality, social vices, low productivity, retarded economic...

  • The Gini coefficient according to the statistics is 35.1, though I didn't see the parameters for measurements and have a different opinion on this.
In Nigeria the level of inequality is very wide, which is as a result of poor governance (excessive borrowing by the government on white elephant projects), poor human capital development and many more.

    Taxes...

  • We need good leadership that knows the effects of climate change and introduce policies to reduce the emissions of carbon.

  • Climate change, inequality, insecurity and many more.

    Clean, sustainable and secured.

  • Business experiments is a good approach to solving problems in that it allows the data analyst to get concrete evidence that are important to improving business.

  • The first issue with using data is the GDPR.
The issue with Aisha's data is taking record of customers who have opt in/out, which makes it really complicated in marketing.
I'm still not too comfortable sharing my data because I don't think that the GDPR is effective in my country Nigeria and Africa in general.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

Shows Aisha sales record from 5PM to 9PM. We need to see the data for sales before 5PM to know the orders and the time she has peak sales in order to make deductions.

  • I'm not surprised.
Data can also be used in formulating and driving the right policies in government.

  • Aisha complained about meeting the demand of customers. Though the level of demand according to her fluctuates, she can be on top of her business by taking data on demand, see how the trend moves for each week and then stocking up inline with the trend.

  • My device stores qualitative data about me especially shopping sites I visited.

  • My phone knows about more than 80% of what I do because of high exposure to the internet. I'm very scared cause it's not safe.

  • Hi
I'm Iruoghene from Nigeria. I'm happy to be a part of this course.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

I will go with goal 8, because a decent work and economic growth will lead to achieving every other goal.

  • I will say that development is growth accompanied with increased physical transformation. From economic point of view, it is the growth of an economy plus the physical developmental changes going on in such economy.
Sustainability refers to the ecological environment, how to protect our the environment or the earth from deteriorating and sustainable...

  • Getting involved is an integral part of this study in that it is the point where abstract reaches reality. I will get involved in this course through sharing my ideas on the comment section by way of completing the course tasks.
I haven't identified any barriers on getting involved in the course.

  • Hello,
My name is Iruoghene, I'm a Nigerian and presently doing a postgraduate studies. I choose this course in order to enhance my knowledge on energy and sustainable development.

  • Change is taking place already and at different scales but the major issue is how to coordinate this change. Coordination involves technological development and deployment, the emergence of new business models and
Coordinating change is very sensible and achievable. This could be achieved through the alignment of policies at the national, regional and local...

  • Decarbonization of the energy system cannot be properly achieved without the active role of the people. The people are at the centre of the decarbonization process. Awareness on better and cleaner source of energy for daily to day activities of heating and transportation ( solar PV, wind, EVs etc) are viable means through which decarbonization can be achieved.

  • The phase of energy transition is one that is very complex. What stood out the most for me is the stranded assets. In order to move to a decarbonized system, there are some losses that must be incurred.

  • Dealing with stranded assets will be a little difficult. Presently, there are some places where some assets are stranded but in the near future many more assets will be stranded. From my point of view, the following can be done.
    1) Energy prices should be done in a way that a portion of the assests can be recovered and the others written off as losses.
    2)...

  • The most striking change between traditional and emerging electricity system is the faster reduction in C02 emissions (decarbonization).

  • There should be policies that will allow a transfer of electricity amongst households at a particular cost that includes tax. Given the percentage of people using solar PV, this should be taken into account the reducing distribution to such areas and increasing that for other areas where there is lesser use of solar PV.

  • There are changes in energy systems here in Abuja, Nigeria. Although the government has failed in providing steady power supply, individuals and corporate organization have delved into the use of cleaner energy systems (renewable energy).
The use of cleaner energy has not been widely embraced but it is mostly used in the homes of elites.

  • In this week, I learnt that energy governance are policies, institutions, rules and incentives related to energy system and the underlying decision making process which established those rules and incentives. Governance is very important in the energy system transformation.
I also learnt about the 4Ds which are decarbonization, decentralization, digitization...

  • All the above challenges all crucial and I don't think that some are more important than the others, though I find some point to be related.

  • I still think that legislation on decarbonization is crucial.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

The 4Ds are a useful way to consider change in energy systems. I think the most pivotal are the decarbonization, digitization, and decentralization because they directly affect our energy system but this doesn't means that democratization is not necessary.

  • Since block chain has been identified as a very important tool for future use, is there a means through which its energy use for transactions can be minimized?

  • The trilema is very useful, but energy security and energy equity will only down play priorities on environmental sustainability, therefore more emphasis should be on environmental sustainability.

  • Wow!!! It was very interesting reading through the transmission and distribution of energy in GB. I don't think there is a well laid out system as this in my country, Nigeria but since we are learning, we hope to be a part to young professionals that can make effective policies for a change.

  • The role of governance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions cannot be overemphasized. In achieving changes from fossil fuel to a clean and better energy system, there is need for better polices and strong institutions that can influence such changes.

  • I'm from Nigeria and presently a doctoral student at the University of Abuja. I have come across the word governance and I look forward to getting more insight in this course.

  • I started this course without an idea on tipping point but I'm rounding off the course with loads of information. Thanks.

  • These are some of the ways of reducing tipping points, and I think placing a social cost on carbon emissions could be most effective.
I think these are not the only ways of reducing the probability of reaching a tipping point. There are other means which includes:
Afforestation: plants breath in carbon dioxide and bring out oxygen while humans breath in...

  • In my opinion, climate change could be a cause but not the major cause of a tipping point in Syria. The could be other social forces that could also trigger the political unrest.
The climate tipping point if not mitigated will be catastrophic. It will affect both economic activities and the environment.

  • I think tipping point is a cool way to influencing collective actions. It can the used in illustrating the grave consequences of our individual and collective actions. These consequences should be well conveyed especially when policies are to be made either through the use of pictures that indicate the ills or through interviews of those affected. Also, social...

  • Interesting, many thanks for the lectures.

  • Tipping point will definitely affect each and every living thing on the surface of the planet. Warming of atmospheric temperature for instance, could lead to severe consequences such as drought, loss of plants through wild fires, rising sea levels, extinction of some animal species, health consequences and many more.

  • Human activities have gradually warmed the atmosphere since the attainment of industrial revolution. This has caused a disturbance in the system with its present state (I will say it has passed its tipping point) because of the drastic loss of Arctic sea ice etc

  • I think we have passed the tipping point in climate change and there are not much to do to reverse it.

  • Hi,
I'm from Nigeria and I'm currently a postgraduate student. I'm hearing about tipping point for the first time, and will really love to learn more about it.

  • I agree that it's all going to get better in the near future as more awareness on solar energy for a cleaner environment is created and the use of better technologies that will conserve energy with better efficiency.

  • There is a continues discovery in the superconductor technology. Research on transforming it into more advanced technology like transferring it into wires and other useful shapes with less cost and the right infrastructure in place for carrying out the research. This R&D will take a little while before they are implemented

  • The ability to reduce its temperature from 100degrees to room temperature with energy transmission without losses, it could help in solving the energy crisis.

  • Through the use of superconductors for the storage of energy and transfer of enormous amount of current between power stations to prevent loss of energy.

  • Solar energy is not limited in supply to a particular individual, once it shines on one, it shines on all. In the near future, centralized energy system could still be needed in order to improve the storage and supply of energy.

  • Solar fuel and batteries can be used to provide energy for the world through better research on their storage capacity. Newer technologies which can store up more energy can be used in place of power plants, nuclear, gas and coal. It is quite important to note that there is no perfect substitution for other nonrenewable forms of energy.

  • The production of hydrogen gas through water splitting this will help in reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

  • Knowing some of the materials especially grapheme and its application. This knowledge gives an insight into living in a clean and sustainable world free of carbon emissions.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

The best materials to be used are materials that are can be produced with little cost, highly efficient in conducting electricity and is durable that is, they can last more than twice what we have now.

  • Graphite foil which can be used in manufacturing high temperature gaskets and packages.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

They are used in applications where high electrical conductivity is required, this includes wind turbine generators, tacho generators, railway technology etc.
It is one of the strongest materials and it is about 200 times stronger than steel, it can be added to lots of other materials and give it fantastic properties. It has fantastic thermal conductivity,...

  • Some of the limitations of the materials listed above includes their cost of production, toxicity and causes environmental pollution. Some of these materials are located on the earth crust such as copper and lead while others are located deep down the earth and require mining e.g. graphite, cobalt.
These materials are not located evenly across the earth while...

  • The critique that stands out most is that the present batteries are heavy and cannot be used for light weight applications and are corrosive due to the acidic content. Also, the lithium cobalt oxide batteries are not very scarce and the mining is unethical.

  • The batteries I use mostly is the primary batteries. These are used for remote controls, lights, clocks, radio, acucheck machines, BP machines, and many more.
The secondary batteries have lesser uses and its mainly for rechargeable lights.
The main purpose of the batteries I use most is to be able to go without charging for a very long time.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

I've learnt a whole lot this week. I learnt about the development of battery of battery cells that have more conductivity, the development of plastic cells in place of silicon cells and the features of a good battery which are efficiency, life span and cost of the batteries.

  • Iruoghene Odenu made a comment

In my community in Delta State in Nigeria, solar technology is quite expensive and can be found in very few homes.
I can get involved by looking for organizations that are into renewable energy, join in creating awareness and a cooperative where the goal is to have a solar installation in the homes of members of the cooperative.

  • Professor Holmes is particular about discovering and developing new technologies that will be more efficient, less expensive and has a longer life span.
With further R&D, I think we can arrive at a single material/ solution that will have the quality of efficiency, low cost and durable.
Having a range of solar technologies that are efficient, durable and...

  • if there were an easy to manufacture, cheap material that could be made into solar cells, then the world today will depend more on solar energy.

  • The Dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC). This is because they are low cost to manufacture. They include only materials which are earth abundant.
I also think that the Dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC) has higher potential for future application.

  • I have never had the knowledge of how a solar cell worked before now.

I learnt how solar cell works and that solar photovoltaic energy provides 1% of all electricity usage globally and on average, one square metre of land receives the equivalent energy per year as a barrel of oil or 200 kg of coal.

  • I have heard about the Terra watt challenge in previous studies and in still added value to what I have learnt before.

I got a new insight on the amount of energy that the sun produces. 23,000TW, this is a whole lot better and higher than the nonrenewable energy sources put together. This is a wonderful knowledge to me, thanks.

  • Given the above information, renewal energy is the best solution to the energy problems

  • Carbon emissions has increased catastrophically to about 406 parts per million atmospheric CO2 concentration of which before the Industrial Revolution, we were 280 parts.
If homes focus on led light bulbs, then there will be a reduction in the amount of carbon emission annually.
Yes, personal choices can reduce the level of emission when aggregated.
    If...

  • I totally agree with this. The daily activities of production and consumption has increased the level of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Therefore, there should be a shift from the over reliance of our mains sectors on fossil fuels and preserve our remaining fossil fuel reserves. This will definitely help in combating the predicted growth in warming for the...

  • I have heard of the Terra watt challenge but haven't read of any challenge similar to the Terra watt challenge.

  • I agree with professor Smalley. Though these comments were emade in 2000, I think they are still valid.
I do not totally agree with his notion that solving the energy crisis will have a flow-on effect for all of the other challenges.

I will love to know how it will affect terrorism and wars, and the population.

  • I'm joining to garner more knowledge on energy situation, materials, the Terra watt challenge and many more. Though I'm joining late but I hope to have a promising time

  • I'm immensely grateful for this wonderful advice, many thanks.

  • Many thanks to you all, had a great and rewarding time learning on policy making in this past weeks

  • Looking forward to be a part of it. Thanks.

  • Thanks.

  • To take actionable steps in building my policy plan

  • The broad perspectives are very important in defining the pathway through which success can be achieved.

  • Every aspect mentioned above are very important in creating an action plan.
There could be more reasons to be added with further research.

  • My passion is to have a clean and sustainable environment in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria this can be achieved through policies on oil spillage and environmental degradation.
Evidences on this includes personal stories of farmers who lost their crops to oil spillage, fishermen who couldn't fish cause the fishes were all dead and on the surface of the...

  • Every aspect of the story was inspiring but the aspects that caught me most are;
Firstly, identifying an online campaign point and making online petition which was useful for galvanising and bringing people together.

Secondly, reaching out within to all the women's organisations that were already working towards the ratification of the Istanbul Convention,...
