  • I will have to go back to this question when I calm down since I am not a big fan of my country (normal people are not). Just when I think how the government appoints diplomats and international representatives is enough to make me cringe. Not a touch of professionalism and international and intercultural education (and bed-forged) relations, political...

  • Some countries have very distinct cultural characteristics. You just have to think of the food, some aspect of their lifestyle, religious worship, everyday life, an item of clothing and you can guess which nation and their culture we are talking about.

  • Considering the similarities and contrasts even among seemingly similar cultures, cultural relations are very important, starting from your personal to your professional life. I see cultural relations as essential when forming bonds with people from other countries, continents. However, not many people are familiar with what is "our culture". When they dig...

    (A) Hey Susie, Sorry it’s been so long since I wrote and hope all is going well for you. (C) I went out last week for a hike and the weather was beautiful. (F) I took a track fairly close to home called the Skippers Pass loop. (E) I met a girl, Sophie, who invited me to go with her to a swimming hole. (B) It was okay until I went under...

  • When I was a kid, I used to hike for miles around my grandparents' house in the mountain village. Now I am not sure I will be so brave, fear is something you learn.

  • The Skipper Pass drama series is filmed in a beautiful forest in New Zealand. The nature is magnificent and the music wisely chosen to reflect the atmosphere. Emma, the, main character, has found herself in a bit of a problem. Let's see how she deals with it and what happens next.

  • Have you seen my wallet?

  • The suspense, mistrust and tension are there but Episode 2 has a plot twist. Let's see what happens.

  • Tatjana Jancić made a comment

No idea what happened but let's wait and see.

"Actually" is my go-to word whenever I need to connect the sentence parts when speaking. Just like Taylor Swift uses "like" 32 times in a speech that contains 50 words. (Mean me)

  • My favorite part was the music, great choice to announce the drama!

  • Sophie knows her way around the swimming hole since she knows from which point to dive in. That makes me think she is familiar with the underwater dangers as well. However, she may have decided to simply leave Emma, to spook her out or, as Nisha Khan wrote, she is a ghost .-). We'll see!

  • (A) One sunny day, Emma decided to hike to the beautiful Skippers Pass.
    (E) After walking a short distance, she stopped for a drink.
    (I) Then she rang her father and told him she would be home after hiking.
    (G) Emma saw Sophie sitting on a rock.

    (C) When they arrived at the swimming hole,...

  • I used to write reverently for years and years. Then my mother found them, read them and threatened to burn them (Fahrenheit 451 anyone?). She died 10 years ago but I still write them on various scraps of papers and hide them in weird corners, hahaha, funny 'coz now I live alone. I have started an online journal recently. Of course it is in a hidden file :-).

  • Can't believe she is a Kiwi!!! Good going, Emma!

  • I am certainly going back to learning Italian, I miss it so much!

  • I will definitely travel to the US again once I get my visa.

  • I usually get up early and immediately put the kettle on. I always drink Turkish coffee in the morning and check my emails as I do so. Sometimes, if I get up earlier than usual, say 6, I go for a walk.

  • Ditto.

  • I sometimes do the Future Learn courses :-).
I frequently go to the pub behind my building.
    I hardly ever jog.
    I often do yoga.

  • It is not her first time hiking, she checks the cell range, reminds a friend about the medication, predicts how much time it will take her to reach the Pass and come back.
I don't think I would go with Sophie. She gives me the creeps (and the ominous music playing does not help much!) and I would probably head to the Pass first, maybe even convince Sophie to...

  • Yes, I love hiking and over time, I have learned not to rush though nature to reach a certain point but to enjoy the scenery and the air.

    Where is the Preview?

  • I would love to have a swimming hole nearby in this unbearable heat.

I am happy for now although I would like to watch the Preview :-)

  • Hi, I am Tatjana, I teach Business English and the Access Microscholarship program (which means that I also teach a lot of American history as well :-)), and I love TV drama series.

  • I am an EL/BE teacher and teacher trainer and also do the U.S. programs (Share America, Women Lead) but looove TV series and have already recommended this course to so many friends, students and colleagues. Can't wait to start!!!!

  • @DoménicaVillacísSierra Happens here in Serbia as well, in all those patriarchal societies (I assume Ecuador is a patriarchal society as well).

  • I think that we (the course's participants) come from different backgrounds and it is important to recognize our "dissimilar contexts" in discussions. My "not being recognized" is not the same as some other woman's "not being recognized". We should really be aware of our respective contexts and backgrounds. What I have also found problematic that there are...

  • Judging by the comments I have read in this section, this should be fun;-)

  • Hi, I'm an English teacher and teacher trainer and teach these topics as well.

  • Hei, Jeg heter Tanja. Hva heter du?

  • Hi, I am from Serbia and have a colleague from/in Norway. My question: Any recommendations for the dialect I should choose?

  • Norway has a great welfare system, they do charge 37% for skatt tax but they take care of their citizens. Great nature, people-friendly system.

  • Oh, it is difficult to catch the pronunciation, it's kind of snappy.

  • I love your tasks, the true examples of learner's autonomy!

  • "How" is always a bit more important than "what". When I approach a certain topic using students' previous knowledge, using them as resources and letting/guiding them into shaping the lesson, what is taught is more memorable long term. If you insist on what is being taught rather than how it is being taught, the impact is just not the same (speaking from 20...

  • I have experienced it several times during some very difficult periods (bombing, caregiving for the very sick and the dying) and I am sorry to say my response is Freeze. I kind of freeze and am unable to react appropriately. When the bomb blasted near our house, or the plane was swooping down very low with all the engines roaring, I just froze and was unable...

  • Easy questions:
    - What is the man doing?
    - What is he wearing?
    Difficult ones:
    - Who do you think he is talking to on the phone? What are they talking about?

  • This is very confusing to me in the UK. I had no idea if&when I could compliment a child while at a bus stop (in my country complimenting a child on their beauty/charm is welcome), if I felt like it, so I mostly kept quiet.

  • This was like listening about my father's family from the south :-). Over the years I have switched to the relaxed time in my private life and I love it.
As for other cultures, well, I had a boyfriend in Turkey and whenever we visited his friends, when the parents were around, they'd ask him what kind of coffee I took or if I wanted anything else - I was...

  • Hi, I live in Serbia and haven't volunteered with refugees but would love to learn more about it since the seminars provided by the MoE (for working with refugee children) are completely useless, according to the colleagues that have attended them.

  • I'll try to find it here. I love Jane! I think that her unfinished works are written better than most finished ones of today.

  • Haha, you're right! I did it with all groups this year.

  • I am not sure teaching in Spain is easy for non-native teachers. A friend of mine has been living there since 1999, with a BA in English Language and Literature and she was rejected for teaching positions quite a few times before she settled for an administrative jobs (she speaks good Spanish and is fluent a German as well). Has the situation changed for the...

  • Good question!

  • C and D, depending on the level, but I am more inclined toward C, sounds more professional. Instructions are my weakness as I tend to make them seem more complicated unnecessarily. I tend to provide them in chunks if they are too long so as not to confuse my students (or myself!).

  • To this day it is my favorite novel of all times - I have read it 8 times :-). Not to mention partial reading, when you are feeling nostalgic and pick up the book and read some passages again.

  • Learners' needs. Despite having the curriculum prescribed by the state (topics, vocabulary range, grammar to be covered), I tend to adapt the lessons to suit the needs of each stream that I teach. Paralegals can do without Pride and Prejudice but Legalese and "basic elements of contact writing" are more important for them. It is more work for me (I have 8...

  • My way of learning grammar was working out the rules by myself while reading a book/set of examples/watching a movie - all based on the context.
I am mostly a visual/kinesthetic combo - I see (not necessarily hear but it may help) and then write it down (action). No wonder I excelled at dictation ;-), even without knowing what the word actually meant (...

  • I enjoy mostly independent tasks including all types of learning (visual, audio, kinesthetic).

  • Why aren't our university courses and degrees acceptable to many language schools abroad since we learn all that CELTA offers and much more at uni? CELTA is rather expensive for Serbian teachers (with the salary being less than 400 euros per month).

  • Ah, I understand. I have a student who speaks really good English with a weird German-Russian accent (he's a Serb) - it's hilarious! No idea how he does it. We've practiced but to no avail, it gets more comprehensible but the accents is rooted! Sometimes I have to strain my ears hard or ask him to repeat because it sounds like a foreign language :-).

  • The beginning of the lesson, she is giving instructions and asking questions so hat she can get her students to speak and share their ideas.

I am sorry to say I didn't find the TKT programme very useful for teachers - we learned all that at university. The certificate helped to ensure the opportunity to give seminars on behalf of the BC as their trainer.

  • All of the above, but some groups are unyielding :-), oh!

  • As a teacher, when I think of my students I think classroom environment is critical to their learning. In the positive, encouraging, friendly and supportive atmosphere learning happens more easily and quickly. Their participation is also important but it has to be encouraged through positive atmosphere.
In linguistic terms, fossilized errors and native...

  • I am mostly guided by intrinsic motivation, I enjoy learning for fun and for my own pleasure.
My second language is French and I have always enjoyed it, but I had never been in a position to use it until March this year when I had four French teachers take part in my seminar. So I switched to French whenever they found it hard to follow and they were really...

  • Accent or pronunciation?

  • Communication and work prospects.

  • I have been trying to learn Welsh as well, just a bit, courtesy to the people that will host me in Cardiff this summer :-):

  • Danish has never seemed difficult ...until now ;-)!

  • I've never thought of teaching in China before since it's too far away but I have been considering it for a while.

  • I never wanted to become a teacher, it was to be a "transition period job" to the job I really wanted. However, considering the economic and political situation back then, we couldn't afford many things so English (my third language and very much in demand back then) became an option (I wanted to study astronomy and geology but my parents could not afford to...

  • Hi, since I am a constant learner, this is yet another opportunity to learn something new and modify my views/teaching/coaching. I am an EFL teacher and teacher trainer and since 2014 I have also worked as a curriculum designer.
