Create dynamic front-end experiences with React

Modern front-end development is about more than styling pages. On this course, you’ll use React to build interactive, component-based applications that manage changing data and connect to live services, working alongside Claude Code, an AI coding assistant, throughout.

Start with React fundamentals, including components, JSX, the virtual DOM, and the modern development environment. You’ll see how reusable components make applications easier to organise and scale, and learn to guide Claude Code with clear prompts, then review and correct the code it generates.

Manage data and interaction with React hooks

Explore props, state, and hooks such as useState and useEffect to manage application data and side effects. You’ll practise composing reusable component hierarchies and debugging AI-generated code with tests that expose hidden bugs.

Use client-side routing to create multi-view experiences without page reloads, keeping larger React applications organised and easy to move through.

Connect React to live data

Consume REST APIs and handle asynchronous data, loading states, and errors. You’ll use Claude Code to refactor your data-fetching logic, deciding which changes to accept, reject, or correct as your project grows.

By the end, you’ll be able to create data-driven React applications with AI-powered features, and use AI coding tools confidently while keeping your own judgement in control of the code you ship.

Syllabus

  • Week 1

Build Interactive React Components with Claude Code

    • React Foundations and Project Setup

Explore React fundamentals, declarative UI, JSX, Vite, and Tailwind CSS. Learn to structure reusable components, set up a React project, and build the initial TripCraft interface.

    • AI-Assisted Development with Claude Code

Understand AI-assisted React development with Claude Code. Learn to generate components, write effective prompts, review AI-generated code, and improve the TripCraft interface.

    • Props, State, and Data Flow

Discover React props, useState, event handling, and one-way data flow. Learn to manage user interactions, update component state, and share information across the TripCraft interface.

  • Week 2

Manage State, Routing, and Server Data in React

    • Effects, Refs, and Shared State

Learn to manage side effects with useEffect, interact with elements using useRef, and organise shared application state through React Context and useReducer.

    • Custom Hooks and Debugging AI Code

Identify reusable custom hooks, stateful logic, and React debugging. Use Claude Code to refactor components, identify hook-related issues, and test improvements in TripCraft.

    • Routing and Server Data

Examine React Router, dynamic routes, REST APIs, and TanStack Query. Learn to build multi-page interfaces, fetch external data, handle loading states, and manage server data in TripCraft.

    • Mutations, Performance, and the Refactor Lab

Analyze to handle form submissions with React Actions, apply optimistic updates, measure rendering performance, and use Claude Code to refactor and optimize React applications.

  • Week 3

Build and Deploy AI-Powered React Apps

    • Streaming AI Interfaces

Apply secure Claude API integration, streaming AI responses, and accessible chat interfaces. Learn to handle loading states, errors, and streamed content in React applications.

    • Generative UI and Tool Calling

Configure to create generative UI from structured AI outputs, validate responses using Zod, and implement secure AI tool calling with input validation and user confirmation.

    • Deploying and Shipping TripCraft

Prepare and deploy the AI-powered TripCraft application using Vercel. Explore production builds, secure API integration, environment variables, accessibility, and launch-readiness checks.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you‘ll be able to...

  • Create responsive React interfaces using JSX, components, props, and Tailwind CSS.
  • Apply hooks, Context, reducers, routing, and API data fetching.
  • Develop interactive forms with validation, error handling, and optimistic updates.
  • Evaluate React performance, accessibility, and AI-generated code through testing.
  • Demonstrate secure AI-powered React applications with streaming, structured outputs, and deployment.

Who is the course for?

This course is for aspiring and practising front-end developers, full stack developers, software engineers, and designers who code. Working knowledge of HTML, Tailwind, CSS, JavaScript, DOM manipulation, and ES6+ features is required.

What software or tools do you need?

Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including functions, arrays, objects, and asynchronous programming, is recommended; no prior React experience is required. You will need a computer with a stable internet connection, a code editor such as VS Code, Node.js, and a modern browser. Claude Code and a Vercel account are required for the related exercises, and Claude API access is needed for live AI responses, though a mock AI provider is included for development and testing.
